Roshi was really strong, he was able to go toe to toe with a Saiyan that had been trainer for combat, albeit a very young one. To think Goku went from that to mastering the power of the gods and angels in just about 30 years.
Actually without the monkey transformation, Roshi wouldn't have had so much trouble beating Goku at this point of the story. That's what canceled one of his best techniques and then wore him down (by having to blow up the moon). I think Goku is only stronger than Roshi in the next tournament (or at the very least not before he's able to beat Tao Pai Pai, with Karin's training).

By the following tournament, Tien Shin Han and Goku.were already clearly above Roshi and when Goku was an adult, after his fights with King Piccolo, training with Kami and fighting Piccolo Jr he was far stronger. Remember, the tougher the battle and the more damage they get, the stronger Saiyans become when they recover.

the actual original translation for why Goku wasn't to use energy attacks was because he couldn't control it and he'd put the spectators in danger by doing it, but it was changed to try and make them feel more equal to justify the martial arts fight. don't know why they'd do that

This fight was truly in a league of its own back then. The choreography and animation is so good and you never know what’s coming next. This just shows how great and underrated OG Dragon Ball is. And I can already tell you the next arc is going to get even better! It’s actually one of the most important arcs of all time because of its influence on later events in Z and Super and it’s by far my favorite OG Dragon Ball arc!

I prefer the tournament arc over what's coming next personally, but what's coming next is also very important considering what happens in Z. Though there are a handful of REALLY good encounters in there! Two big ones jump to my head. I just personally find the majority of the arc kinda boring. Still, it's what comes AFTER this next arc that's the REAL legendary stuff in this series
I prefer when Goku is traveling personally, so I prefer the next arc. It has (spoilers ahead) several really cool encounters (especially Tao Pai Pai and the Karin Tower), and ended with Sangoku meeting/fighting his grandfather. A lot happened. While a tournament is cool and energetic, but is just a tournament.

I just personally think it's a bit boring because for most of the arc, Goku is by himself. He's just not as fun without characters like Krillin, Yamcha or Bulma to interact with to me. He gets temporary friends all over the place, but none of them are really that interesting imo. Though yeah, now that you mention it, there are more great encounters than I remembered off the top of my head. I forgot that the trip to Baba's was part of this too. I will certainly admit though that this tournament arc is definitely the "weakest" of the three major tournaments in this series~

Something to think about is this first tournament when it aired in the 80's extremely inspired the manga artists behind one piece, naruto, and bleach to make fighting anime/manga similar to it and is why they went on to create their amazing series themselves. Dragonball started it all and how proud are we all to live in the era of the fighting shonen genre

The tournament was great. It's an incredible arc that shows the focus of fighting that the show will take, while also building the foundation that strong opponents will gather at tournaments. (Also, it builds in Goku the desire to push and test himself at tournaments, like he continues to do even at the Tournament of Power.) I'd like to say I choose this arc over the next. But the next arc really gives Goku a lot of shine, it does a lot of nice world-building and it does a great job of taking the adventure side of the show (that we saw as they gathered the Dragon Balls) and making it a staple.
The best thing about DBZ are: 1.Kungfu fighting style so cool & detail. U can feel the power/how strong the kick & punches. 2.u can see blood & bruises. 3.Qi Blast are dangerous. Even a small qi blast can harm/kill u. Kamehame are can kill in dbz but in DBS it become a joke. 4.Ssj aura more intensed & real. The power scale is LOGIC
The next arc is my personal favorite in og dragon ball just because it has much more adventure/exploring of the world than the other arcs. I would also wait to watch the latest dragon ball movie until you finish watching this next arc, (not necessary but it’ll be more rewarding)

The OG was the Best loads of awesome stuff in it Unexpected fights enemies technics and characters you would never know what is coming up next and pretty much everything was possible After that and after the Huge Filler Z up to the interesting points and battles things got so repeatitive and almost all the other characters became decorations and obsolete.
Small brain: cut off Goku's tail to make him turn back Big Brain: knockout Goku so that he doesnt hurt anyone Galaxy Brain: Blow up the moon and cause untold collateral damage to the planet killing possibly billions in the oncoming natural disasters

The next arc is my favourite in DB and is 100% a top 2 Dragonball arc. But to me, it's the best of DB and still one of my favourites overall, up next to Saiyan saga and Namek saga as well. Not in terms of epicness etc. but certainly in terms of adventure, world building, humour and the theme of "hunting the dragon balls"!!!

Before dragon ball became a dick measuring contest in Z, dragon ball was a about skill and strategy. Z is amazing and all with the fights but I really wish they would have kept some of the skill factors from DB.
That was a great fight if only Goku had finished saying he is the champion. LIke Roshi said it was improtant that Goku lost, now he can train his ass off. Roshi using his prize money to pay for Goku's huge appetite priceless. Looks like the next arc is the red ribbon army arc going with the comments I read, that's my only seen a few episodes before guess. The tournaments are definitely tye best arcs in terms of fights, however the in between arcs are great for expanding the world and the characters.
