    Some updates on inclusive research: My former coworkers from Airbnb just launched this amazing site 'A Practical Guide to Inclusive Research' medium.com/inclusive-research Check it out if you havent - it's so so helpful for newbies who are thinking of inclusive research practices but don't know where to start!

    Hey, as a researcher, videos covers this kind of topics is actually very interesting and helpful for us, (finally, there is some topics not related with job hunting lol)
    Just want to encourage you to keep updating topics about your insights on the industry or your daily job or the challenges you’ve been through

    Thank you so much Aona. My dissertation is about people with disabilities I am glad that this will be part of a trend in UXR.

    UX researcher here! I love your videos and this one is no different. On the inclusive bit, just another reason that ux researchers need to constantly be empathizing with the user which is often only thought about in ux design.

    I loved this more loose style of video! It's great to hear more off the cuff opinions since, as an Interactive Media undergrad, I've already watched all the 'What is UXR' and 'How to Make a Portfolio' videos (although those are helpful too). The way you talk about users helps reaffirm that this is what I want to go into. Thanks for this!

    Really enjoyed the Instantcart ✖️dummy data example! It helped me understand the drawbacks of using dummy data in testing and motivated me to think about what might mitigate that!

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I especially liked the part of accessibility and inclusion. It would be great to hear in the future more on the two subpoints you mentioned about recruiting and building inclusively. These are really important and great needs for sure!

    Totally agree when testing with data that is not 'real' to them, it throws users off in testing. My company doesn't have the resources to build sandboxes either. I'd love to know if anyone else has found work arounds. I have found though that sometimes when we use their real data that they hone too much on that and derail testing. It's a double edge sword!

      Woo amazing insight! I think in that case using realistic “fake” data would work. Eg ask someone who has the domain expertise to design those dummy data so that they don’t look too dumb hahaha 😬

      "They hone too much on that"? Would that be a reflection of the real behaviour should you launch it? Or - lack of familiarity, in this case a two-step approach might work. Try to figure out the scale and type of data a specific participant is expecting through screener (e.g., what do they buy on Instacart? Do they expect to pay $100 or $50 for this order?) Quick UI changes.

      Ouch, so true. I've tested both with the same set of participants. With dummy data results felt more attitudinal, with real data the key finding was that users were looking for familiarity, it felt more like validating if the data is correct. Might be the nature of my product/my junior lvl facilitation skills.

    Love this video and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, it’s been a real help as I consider my career transition! I definitely see the remote/inclusivity trends in product design flows at all stages, I was working in higher education tech until recently and those were centers of a lot of our efforts. I wonder if that will generate some cross-team empathy; the biggest frustration I hear from UXRs in my network is difficulty getting other teams to use their insights. Maybe the shared experience of the complications of remote work and the shared urgency around inclusivity could help?
    I definitely would not have wanted my role to be remote permanently even if I like the flexibility; so much of meeting facilitation as a project manager relies on being able to ‘read the room’ and other interpersonal skills that are difficult to fully use in a remote setting.

      Thank you for sharing this story!! I know right... even for stakeholder relations, sometimes I feel like conflicts can just be solved by grabbing a drink together 🥲 but now that solution is taken away...

    @AonaTalks could you please mention some good ux Researcher portfolio to go through and share your knowledge about what's happening in their portfolio and why.

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve been wanting to do this - but usually UXRs case study presentations are confidential and the person needs to be okay with letting me show their stuff out. If you have one - I’m happy ti do it :)

    Depending on the problem you need to solve, why not funnel the user to only have a select amount of choices to choose from? Then, represent the "end state" of checkout with their choice from the limited selection they had to begin with? Based on the scenario you set for them to go through, that could limit the number of choices a user really needs for it to feel "real" I suppose.
    Would this be a possible idea Aona, or does this present too much "leading" the user and/or manipulate the end result too much? I guess it really boils down to what problem you are trying to solve and what particular pain point you need to figure out. Thoughts anyone?

    Thanks so much for sharing, Aona!! Do the quantitative and qualitative researchers always work separately? Or they collaborate on the mixed method projects?

    • @AonaTalks

      Not always :) and yes we do collaborate a lot on mixed media projects

      @@AonaTalks Thanks so much for your reply, Aona!! I am also interested to know if the quant people use specific programming languages, such as R or Python. Always learning so much from your videos!! Thank you so much for helping ux beginners like me!

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 роки тому

      Yea I believe so! That said, I believe you don’t have to learn all the programming languages of course, just one that you have high proficiency in that can help you do the job should be enough. I’m not a quant UXR so you should check this with other quant UXRs :)

    Hi Aona. There is a burning doubt about remote research in my mind. I don't know about the USA but here in my country, people are not very familiar with communication applications like Skype or Meet. So, I think whoever is able to participate in remote research belongs to a more tech-familiar group which is not the case for all the people who use smartphones today. Have you ever faced this kind of problem? And if "yes", how did you motivate other groups to engage?

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 роки тому +1

      I want to say YES and I have to say lack of inclusivity in research doesn't just happen in Remote research, it happens during non-Covid time as well. I think being mindful of it is a step 1! And during normal days, we encourage occasional research trips as well as in-home research for this very reason.

    How do you perform remote research for physical products? I'm a usability engineer and one of my challenges during this time is to do remote study. We've had several participants cancel sessions because their city got lockdown. It's hard for me to find more participants because some of them aren't comfortable to go out yet.

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 роки тому

      ahh it would be super challenging 😥 fortunately I work in software so I can still find some workarounds.. I’ve heard folks mailing the hardware products to the participants house for them to try out and mail it back

    How can you develop skills about remote research? like taking a course or something similar? :)

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 роки тому

      Try it once! And you’ll learn it from there - it’s same with any other research practices ☺️ it’s not that much different than doing research in person. Just different logistics.
