  • This is a film of hope. A war veteran returns home, shell shocked. He believes he has only a short time to live and settles down in a beautiful sleepy village. He meets an old man they call the Bee Master and his child helper, Little Scout. Together they convince the veteran that he really does have more to live for.
    Have you ever read this book? I just can't tell you how beautiful, insightful, picturesque and life-encouraging it is!
    It is a deep story, centered around a WWI Vet, sentenced by Dr.s to die. They've put him in a "Hospital for TB Patients (unbeknownst to him) after being severely wounded. He was sent to this hospital because the Dr.s did all they could for him, and he's just being made comfortable until his death. But..........he is not ready to die!
    Of course the Book is more detailed, and so much more in depth than a movie could ever be. But do enjoy this film story (you'll recognize many of the actors), and please watch the following Gene-Stratton Porter films based as well, on her books that I've uploaded to our list: "The Romance of the Limberlost", and, "Freckles Comes Home"
    (I haven't been able to find "Freckles", yet, but will continue to comb the Web for a possible movie made from the book ;)
    Director:
    Christy Cabanne
    Writers:
    Gene Stratton-Porter (novel), Adele Buffington (screenplay), 1 more credit »

    The Bee Keeper was recommended to me by my friend Junior Sadler in 1964 when we were in the 6th grade. He loaned me his copy, and despite being an eleven year old boy, I was immediately transfixed by the book and the story. I loved this book and sought out others by Ms. Porter. Many years later I was able to find my own copy of this book, and it has lost none of it's charm and romance for me. I'm looking forward to watching the movie!

      I was so happy to read of another person who loved Gene Stratton-Porter books! Aren't they just wonderful? She was such an inspirational and gifted writer. She catalogued and taught Natural Science to children in her area through her samples, then through her gifted writings. What a woman, going through all she did in the Limberlost Swamps to share what she discovered with others! 100ish years have passed with children and adults still learning from her discoveries.
      Thank you so much for your own story, rickyritardo. I'd love to know which book of Ms. Stratton-Porter's is your favorite when you get a minute :)

    i read Song of the Cardinal and would like to read them all. i'm a nature lover and the story filled my soul completely. Nobody wrote about good and bad in people and the intricacies of the beauty of nature like her. wish i still had the book, it was inherited from grandparents and one of the red ones with the beautiful picture on the front, i guess an original print, now, from seeing them all on the web. otherwise, i never would have known. i will always love the characters in Song of the Cardinal and that there was someone with a mind so beautiful in this world to write such an indescribably wonderful book.

      I can't agree with you more! And thank you for reminding me about "Song of the Cardinal!" And do remember that you can find a copy on Ebay or even Amazon.
      Gene Stratton-Porter must have been such an amazing person to endure what she did, just to get the pictures of wildlife in the Indiana Swamp (Limberlost) areas. It's such a wonderful thing that she documented that land and it's animals and birds. Can you imagine being eaten alive by misquitoes, on your toes always because of snakes, lugging around the huge camera equipment in all those clothes the ladies wore (how hot and humid it must have been!) just to get a picture of a bird or animal back in those days to educate children and adults? Amazing :)

      Robin, please read them! They each will, as you beautifully put it, "fill your soul"--with everything good and true! Each story she wrote had a specific inspiring message. I wish I could show you our very humble mantle...all of her books have been there for at least 20 years, read and re-read (I even had my daughters read them and do summer book reports, for happy rewards--that's how precious and life/mind-changing each of her stories were (they speak to all ages!) I do encourage you to read them. I adore each story, individually :)

    This was a beautiful and utterly surprising movie. I was especially moved by the nature of the relationships between the various characters. It really was a movie about hope and kindness. Is it pre-code? The realistic handling of an illegitimate birth suggests so.

      @one4allfour1  6 років тому +2

      Hi Laurie :) I’m so glad you were surprised by this Gene Stratton-Porter novel to movie story. Her book of the same title is even more beautiful and hope-filled.
      As for your pre-code question I’m not sure. It’s a bit muddy when it comes to specific studios putting in to actual practice the Hayes law(s). Maybe another viewer knows?
      Thank you for watching! And be sure to also watch “Girl of the Limberlost” which is a beautiful and hope-filled Stratton-Porter Story. I’ll attach the link for you. :). ua-cam.com/video/PPm7iylN5jk/v-deo.html

    Saw this movie years ago on an obscure and now defunct Cable TV channel. What I liked about it shows one of the benefits of a low-budget movie made by a small studio. The locations are fantastic. A big studio would have just shot everything in the studio. Here, they had to go on locations, which are far better and more interesting than any studio set. For instance, the whole property where Hobart Bosworth's cabin was located, or shooting scenes in a real hospital. Also interesting to see very familiar faces when hey were young, 30 years before you first saw them on TV. Of course, Neil Hamilton, from Batman, bu when I was a kid, Betty Furness was a crabby old lady who did consumer advocate reports on the local channel 4 NBC news here in NYC. Not used to seeing her as a young person. Hobart Bosworth & Helen Jerome Eddy, on the other hand, were just the opposite, former big names in he silent picture days, now playing character parts in a b-movie. I'm curious to know if anyone knows where the location scenes were shot.

    It's hard to believe that of the two headliners, Neil Hamilton would be best remembered for his portrayal of Gotham City Police Commissioner Gordon on the 1960s "Batman" television series, while Betty Furness would be a commercial spokeswoman for Westinghouse on the "Studio One" TV drama anthology series (1948-58).

      Now that's some interesting movie/tv trivia! It is amazing to think that so many early 30s-50s (sometimes in the silent era, as well!) Movie Stars aren't remembered for their great early movie performances and careers. I know, personally, often I'll stop or rewind to the credits and realize that (wow!) an actor or actress obviously had another and very different "screen life" before TV ;).

      +Malka Ringel Thank you for joining in this (heartbreakingly) honest conversation. You are so right--I was amazed (and saddened) to watch a 7 month old glued to the screen of a cell phone. His eyes were tracking while his relative was using it. He was reaching for it repeatedly!! I was told this was normal since his 4 year old brother had been playing games on it and a tablet since he was a baby, also!
      Is this normal with little children today?

    • @one4allfour1
      @one4allfour1  8 років тому +1

      +Joel House Haha ;) Unfortunately, I believe you are correct, sir. I've found, personally, that if you can appeal to the "artistic" look and feel of Classic movies, sorry, "films", you have a better chance of setting the hook. My family of children, nieces, and nephews are just now understanding how great these films are, finally!
      They're all in their late 20s-early 30s.
      I would have loved to have back-up, with them watching Classic morality stories, 20 years ago.
      All you can do is try--early and often. And maybe bribe.

    • @one4allfour1
      @one4allfour1  7 років тому +3

      Sunny Quackers When my children (including nieces and nephews ;) were younger than about 25 years old, they had little to no interest in "black and white" films--until they began really having to make their own choices and decisions and experience the consequences---living life.
      Now, they quietly sit, hear, appreciate and understand the stories. They can relate!
      As I see it, with today's movies being in color, HD, IMAX, 3D, etc., the emphasis is usually not on the story, but on the visuals, right?
      I might be way off, but I'm thinking that even if our Classics were all colorized, it probably wouldn't entice the younger generations to "hear" the stories...until they were "ready".
      This is why I love the Classic movies in all their Black and White glory!

    I read the book. Although it had to deviate quite a bit of show those parts of the movie, the point was assuring us that it turned out well. I’m sure that Jim and Molly got married. I immensely enjoyed the scene when Jim and Molly were each trying to explain to Aunt Margaret what had happened. Of course, she already knew because she had overheard their conversation. However, Aunt Margaret, bless her kind heart, never let on that she knew the truth. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😇😇😇😇😇

    yes unfortunately it seems this is common. It falls to the parents to limit usage n content. Many just use as tv to occupy the child. It quickly becomes an addiction.....n the kid will fuss if you try to take it away. The blue light that these screens emit, tv as well......should be stored away 1 hour before bed as it interferes with proper rest. This applies to adults also. Would you be so kind as to upload this movie so I can easily download for viewing off line? I am not yet able to figure out how to take from you tube n place into my google chrome!!! Thanks

      one4allfour1 I found the first edition of Freckles on
      a flea market stand in 1998. I loved her work even though I considered Freckles to be a Kiddie book. Afterthat came a girl of the Limberlost ,a daughter of the !and where she could not resist showing the xenophobic attitude of the times nurtured on purpose by society.Naturally , whenever I want to read her books I settle for Girl and the trials of Elnora Comstock, no movie version can do justice to it. This version is a one time watch .Thanks so much again. Laddie is also a Hollywood interpretation of one of her more popular books and has not much to do with the original real story:-( Am now going to Watch King Vidor's our daily bread which I found on your list a few minutes ago... thank you so much

They know where to go for beautiful, truthful writing when they're tired of their generation's "entertainment". Now they have children, so I'm going to try as these little ones grow up, to encourage them to read often and always, good, quality stories by conscientious writers. It does get harder as they get older, you know?

      one4allfour1 You are so very right Ma'am, about the quality of good writing and the long term influence it can have on the young generation. We were brought up on Classics.Even a baby could read and keep himself occupied. But I was astonished to learn from a friend that his neighbour had a 4 year old whose parents were told by her teacher," it is not your job to take care of the reading habits of your child, that is a Teacher's job. Don't read out aloud to your kid because we know about the required reading for a 4 year old". .What puerile, arrant nonsense. When I told Mark that this was the reason why so many of his countrymen were purposely and stubbornly illiterate and couldn't read or write properly, he was rather annoyed at first but then he agreed with me that the whole education system had gone for a six. As a ex- professor, I have a lot of students at college level who do not know the difference between "which "and "witch", spelt any wich way! They cannot be persuaded to open up any sort of book. They really don't have the time! So no wonder when I find somebody encouraging the younger generation to do a little bit of reading I feel really pleased. I think that is what is left for people of our generation ,old movies, vintage books and classic stuff! At school we were very proud of our handwriting , which we wrote with fountain pens. A couple of days ago I saw a short note written by a subordinate, and was horrified at the unformed and misspelled letters and words as if a child had been practicing on a slate. He couldn't be bothered to write legibly and seemed to be proud of his bad handwriting. But that is the way the cookie crumbles in the 21st century...

      Sigh. Pitiful nonsense!
      Yes, parents are forfeiting the joy of teaching their 3-4 year old children to read! I've seen this, as well.
      Both my daughters read, and read well (according to their abilities, which were different) by their 4th birthdays despite TVs, VHS movies, and other possible "choices". We just said, "No" except for planned times. Instead I gave them 1930s & 1940s readers to learn to read from. We read almost every day from them until they "graduated" from them to other readers :) I made a "fishing" game out of a backyard stick, string with a big paper clip on it's end, little cards with the letters of the alphabet and tiny magnets on them (I watched, so no accidental ingesting went on, like most Mom's do watch ;) My children, as well as my nephews and nieces learned the sounds of letters, small words, etc...we went to the library a couple times a week and they checked out books. Sooo many little, fun things parents can do, but many are too tired due to our economy and needing 2 incomes to pay for what one income used pay for in the last 30 some years.
      But, even before bed with kids around a fun preschool story book or books, instead of other distractions or "baby-sitters", parents can start them on good reading habit. And encourage (or bribe ;) their older child to help teach your younger child under supervision!
      I think leaving reading and other valuable life-lessons/instruction to Teachers is unwise, for many reasons. And I've been a Preschool Teacher most of my teen years and adult life, so I GET to say that ;D
      Thanks for the chat, D JS and ENJOY! your Gene Stratton-Porter books :)

      +one4allfour1 You are the first one to notice my 'name' significance. I love Charles Dickens writing!

      Oh I do, too! You can escape back into that time period with his writings, and he always has wisdom woven throughout his works. He was and is a Treasure! It's funny, when you first wrote me I knew because of your "handle" choice you'd be a "kindred spirit" ;-) It's amazing how liking the same authors is a little window into the soul of someone--looking back over all my years I've found this really to be true! Have a great day!

      +one4allfour1 I totally agree with your comments about Dickens. He totally noticed and vividly portrayed the personalities of his characters. He was incredibly gifted! To think that the very 'names' of his characters are indelibly imprinted on readers so long after his death. And, how we sometimes 'find' parallel people in our lives today. I would love to take a course on Dickens! And by the way...I feel that 'all for one and one for all' is the most memorable line in the Three Musketeers. That is an absolutely, solidly profound statement there! Nice sharing with you. My best~

      So nice to talk to you, too, and find a person in such agreement in literary matters :)
      You know, I was a very young wife and mommy when I discovered Dickens--and that's post-Bachelor degree! I used to read all my Dickens while my daughters were taking their naps :D And I'm so grateful to Barnes and Nobles for their $3 hardback classics rack back in those days...I gobbled most of them up with wonder. I even noticed that my vocabulary changed (in a good way!) reading Dickens, Jane Austin, Kipling, Daniel Defoe (I read Robinson Crusoe several times...and to my girls and nephews--I just had to ;) etc...Thankfully I've been able to introduce my nieces, also, to Jane Austin :) Herman Melville's Moby Dick captivated me with his descriptions of the ship's characters--amazing.
      I completely understand your wanting to take a course in Dickens--think of how much you might learn concerning the History of the times and personal lives of those that have gone before us. It sure helps to understand where we are today. Great idea! If I find any offered course(s) on-line, maybe even for free, I'll let you know!

    Is "Freckles Comes Home" the movie you're looking for? ua-cam.com/video/f4MMZwYswqk/v-deo.html

      +Miss S (Stephanie) Hello! Thanks so much for being so sweet looking for "Freckles". I actually have "Freckles Comes Home" in my Playlist, but unfortunately it doesn't cover the amazing story that Gene Stratton Porter wrote about his being seriously abused, orphaned, then found and adopted by a big-hearted Logging Boss. The story of how Freckles learned how to walk and protect (making his own living) a miles-long fence line, disabled as he was and completely unfamiliar with country life, let alone a very dangerous swamp, is something I wish every young man could read.
      But if you every do find something called just, "Freckles", please let us know! Thanks so much for caring :D
