Paper clutter is the hardest for me as well. It follows me everywhere and it’s just a lot of deferred decision-making.

Hey! I love your decluttering videos so far! I've kept my kids artwork in clear boxes too but I go through it with my son sometimes and he keeps his favourites. You'll be surprised at how much your children are willing to get rid of stuff as they get older! 💜

Hi Catherine! I have 2 daughters they are in 11th and 8th grade I have also done Milestones boxes and I'm also a scrapbooker . I do have to say I struggled with what to keep and get rid of. I finally decided to involve my girls on this project so at the end of each school year (younger years) I would lay out all of their art work and I would let them choose what they wanted to keep. Anything super special would go in their Scrapbooks and the rest would go into a portfolio. As for the other work I would keep it in their milestone boxes. I will tell you that less work would come home starting 7th grade a good portion of their work is via Chromebook.

For your memory box, you can use more than one file folder for the school year. My kids are parents now and like looking back at what they did when young.

theres a wesbite called ArtKive that makes a book from all of your kids art to preserve it so you can throw out the papers but still have them all the memories in one book therefore reducing the clutter

It definitely does start to decrease as they reach about 5th-6th grade. I kept alot of pictures my girls did when they were younger. Some I put in their memory box and some I keep inexplicable 13 pockets folders I got (1 for each of them and I pocket for each grade).

I make these boxes for baby showers. Birth through year 5 then preschool through 12th grade. I have an older son now and you definitely get way less in the upper grades, but I definitely encourage keeping papers they score really well on or is something they find interesting. I plan on gifting mine at either graduation or later.

Hey! There’s a bunch of things online websites (ugh didn’t save names) that you send in your kids artwork/ projects and they make them into a cute little book. Maybe it’s something that you can look into for those that you find extra adorable

I did something similar for my kids but used huge 3 ring binders and my kids love them! I didn’t find that the amount to save significantly decreased during the junior and high school years. There are report cards, certificates of achievement, sports team photos, school portraits, articles they wrote for the school paper, programs from school concerts, plays, etc. It’s a lot of stuff. But it’s such a loving and special record of their childhood and youth!

My daughter has 3 boys. She took pictures their artwork then downloaded them in Project Life. You could do the same at Snapfish. Then at the end of the year she reviewed them to see if she had any easy changes. Once she was satisfied she had them print a page and send it to her which she put into photo sleeves in an album. Usually 9 pictures per page. With Snapfish you can also put them into a printed book. Turned out beautiful !

My kids doesn’t bring schoolwork home anymore and haven’t done so in about the last 5 years. At the end of each semester they clean out at school and sometimes they bring one or two items home but never more than that. They’re used to decluttering by now, I started decluttering around when they started school and their stuff wasn’t the first things I did, I started with my personal belongings. My kids are night and day when it comes to decluttering, my son (18) is a born minimalist who only want to keep what he used and my daughter (16) has been a complete packrat who saved everything! She also have all the crafting interests which I of course want to encourage. Since my daughter used to never want to throw away anything I’ve only packaged up her stuff and when she’s gotten older she’s been able to let go of more and more stuff. This last wednesday we did her closet, her room needs routine maintenance because she still had a lot of things but everything has a place now. For reference she have 2 memory boxes (totes) in storage.

Great video, Catherine. The school artwork slowed down around 3rd grade. My daughter decided to make her own school bin in 1st grade.. She's the paper hoarder, not me 😂. It's pretty cool. Even now (4th grade), she will look through it. Have a great Sunday ❤

The school work pretty much come to an end in middle school. I don’t know if it’s because my son loses half of what he does or he just throws it away. But I don’t have much for him after 5th grade. My youngest however who is in 3rd grade…I’m with you the school papers are never ending. I keep art class stuff, certain holiday stuff, if she writes a cute story or anything that she’s super proud of. It’s hard! ❤

What my daughter found helpful was she placed an ad on their neighborhood app when donating clothing especially for kids. That app was so helpful she never had to take them to a thrift store.... Then she knew someone needed them. Same with the baby furniture she sold things for like 10.00 or 5.00. It immediately left her home and she got the satisfaction of knowing someone needed it

Must admit my 4 kiddos didnt care a thing about any " keepsakes" i kept . They even discarded the things from their memory box contents that they saved themselves over the years . I just never really let it become a big job or overwhelming . Im not sorry i put in the minimal amount of time i spent because perhaps one of them might have wanted these things .

TFS Catherine. We made paper to write letters or make art with from all the projects we weren't keeping. Similar with clothes that we didnt donate, we made items out of them. Excellent point, quick draw for deciding works best for me too. Guess I'm too sentimental 😕

Catherine add a photo for each year, report cards, awards, and certificates and what I have found is the grandkids especially love seeing what mom or dad did when they were young. Depending on the child the art gets less but special projects get bigger. One of my kids did poetry and writing, 2 of the kids had large art projects in multiple mediums, another was into wood projects.

I just went through my kids school work i have 4 kids, I had so much. I mean, I still do but you’re right it is super difficult to get rid of and I do tend to keep the most from prek to 2nd. My youngest is currently in 2nd and my oldest is in 8th grade and you kind of stop saving things as they get older. Especially since my oldest daughter usually keeps the work she does at school in her room so you only will really save their things in the elementary years.

For my 6th grader, everything is online. He doesn't take an art class. So keep as much as you want in the earlier years.

Awesome job Catherine, though I would google "Is it good for children to wear hand me down shoes?" and you will find it is not really a good idea as the shoe is moulded to fit your first child and therefore may cause discomfort for the next wearer. But yes, as children age they do bring home less stuff.

Lovely young momma, in love....spend time WITH YOUR SON (NOT making custom memory boxes.) When he grows up, he will not be interested in ANY of these things. Please trust me. Your opportunity is to spend every moment with him while he still wants to hang out with you. (By middle school, he'll prefer his friends.) This time goes SO QUICKLY. You will not go through those paoers, and he'll have ZERO interest. Get a bin sonewhere and take photos of it if you must but please don't spend precious time on it. (My son is 28 now and I can't get him to even take his trophies and diplomas and yearbooks to his own house! 😂) I hope this helps so you don't have regrets wanting to save a bunch of physical things. Hugs from CA

We all have far too many clothes there is only 7 days in a week, so why do we keep years worth of clothes we will never wear but still we keep hold of them. Not a good idea to have children's names on any of their clothing or bags for safety reasons, if an undesirable were to call them by name the child will think he or she is known to them and not seeing their name on their clothing.

    • @CatherineElaine
      @CatherineElaine  6 місяців тому

I don’t have his name on any of his clothes at all so not sure why you think I do! Also, you’d be surprised how many outfits little boys can go through in a day.
