Wow this bought tears to my eyes just how England used to be, when everyone had the time of day for you and what do we have now? Progress they say keep your progress I say!
I was just one year old when this was taken. I remember shopping every Saturday and remember all the shops garage cinemas like that. People were kind then and had a sense of humour.
I was born in Chichester or 'Chi' as we called it, in 1958, I recognised every street and most of the shops in this film footage. Chichester was a great place to grow up but it was never the same after the streets were pedestrianised. I was desperately looking my Mum or Dad or a relative in the crowd, that would have been amazing, will look again you never know. Thanks for posting.
RTK - I was born in Aldingbourne (birth certificate says Chichester) in 1961 and was struck by how little has changed. I think there's still a Stead and Simpson in the same place - lol!! Can't agree about pedestrianisation though: IMO it has made shopping more enjoyable whilst changing nothing of the intrinsic character of Chi. By the way do you find that you say 'Chidester' rather than Chichester? Lovely to see the old swimming pool!!
@@sportsandgamesden3983 - there's a restaurant there now - it's close to the St Pancras church where the statue of Keats is. I'll go and check to see if I'm correct - that it can be seen - as it's a while since I watched this.
Absolutely wonderful video. Chichester has not really changed that much.... just the now pedestrian main street area. I have been visiting since my parents moved there in 1967. I still call it "home", even though I grew up in Surrey.
We used to drive through Chichester often, on our way to the beach at West Wittering. I know we were there in 1953 (when I was eleven), because we spent a week at Wittering that summer. I remember driving by Chichester Cross each time we went through the city.
My birthplace (and where my mum still lives in 2021) nine years before I was born. Even as a boy in the mid-to-late 1960s, much of what is in this film was there. Very high quality.
This road was the A27, running through the middle of Chichester, the forerunner of the main south coast. It's since been bypassed and what a traffic snarl up that is!
i love old footage especially UK . How things have changed. They look like better times, although I'm sure they weren't really. Just rose tinted specs ??
No Roma selling the Big Issue, I notice. Not like now. Chichester actually looked like a living city back then, unlike today, with half the shops empty.

I agree heartily

@@honeychurchgipsy6 I thought the old swimming pool was down the Shippams road? You can’t see that in this video. When do you see the swimming pool?

@@sportsandgamesden3983 - at 5 minutes 17 seconds they go past the swimming pool.
I was bought up in west Sussex, went to Chichester High school for girls. I was born in 1966. This video is amazing.
Great film of chichester how I remember it as a child. 😊
I find this absolutely fascinating and the music is very fitting.

Looks like a far more interesting and vibrant shopping centre back then...
it's interesting to see chichester with all the old cars and busses
This is so cool looks so different from how it is now
amalee grace wish it still looked like that, cars looked so much better and shops and signs were just stunning
I was 3 and "got on me bike "a couple of years after , I loved the rides to Wittering and Bognor . Lovely times thanks for posting ...
I love this video.
Thank you!

OMG, the quality is terrific ✌️ the year before I was born (Kingston upon Thames) but this is timeless and beautiful ! Thanks for this upload
Your welcome 😃
my old town
spikedalive why did it have to change 😖😭
Check the fella who slips off the curb, too busy camera watching, Brilliant footage of a lovely town.
Like the proper buses.
I see Benny Hill in that cut out picture that's in front of that car. 😁📺

They were much better times.
3:22 - Slough built Citroen Traction Avant!
I saw one woman in a pair of trousers.
Nice footage but totally unsuitable music. Needs something upbeat with the theme of the car.
I’m surprised he wasn’t arrested for threatening policemen with a tomahawk! 😉
Im afraid I cant identify the Edwardian car in this video, its rather unkindly referred to as a 'jalopy '.
