As a 16 year old lad in 1971, I joined London Transport as an engineering garage trainee.
I worked on RT buses at Poplar, and was also fortunate to work with older engineering staff who worked on the brand new Routemasters in 1959.
As a youngster I was always mad keen on buses. I was like a kid in a sweetshop. There was so much to learn, luckily I had good blokes there, including one general hand who had worked for London General as a 14 year old. This old man had worked on 'B' type buses.
Great times and great memories. All that knowledge and work, and my wages were 4 old Shillings an hour.
Good film, thanks for taking me back in time.👍
P.s edit. This November 1st 2021, will mark the fiftieth anniversary, when I joined LT; and also 50 years ago when I first started at Poplar.
One particular man, 'Bill Nellis' who was a day bus mechanic was very knowledgeable with regards to mechanical problems with buses. Many years previously he had written to the AEC works, and asked if they would sent him an RT workshop manual. This they certainly did, and on his retirement Bill very kindly passed this manual on to me.
I'm hoping to take a trip down memory lane this year to see the old garage. (If it's still there)
I should think that many of my old workmates have long gone. However I shall think of all those good people, platform and engineering staff who were very kind and patient towards a youngster starting out. Kind regards to all.👍

And I hope you were able to pass what became your knowledge on in later years

@@Keithbarber Hi Keith, yes I did try and help younger men who were passing through the London Transport system just like I did.
As you may know, ideas change and buses are not exempt from that change. The new Titan bus made an appearance, and we stored a good number of these prior to their transfer to Hornchurch. The older men, especially those who had worked on the 'Trolleybuses' were certainly not happy with this new fangled interloper.
We also received a small fleet of Leyland National single deckers for our route 108 through the Blackwall Tunnel. These performed very well and the drivers were very happy with them. At least we tried our best to keep buses on the road, it wasnt always straightforward. I still have many happy memories. Cheers.👍

The only thing that spoils this great video is the music.

Even if you find the music disturbing, maybe you can tell me what the song from this video is called?

Growing up in Finchley in the 70s I only saw RTs on driver training, but I found out too late that if I'd just caught a 221 to Mill Hill I could have ridden in-service RTs on 140, all the way to Heathrow Airport! Made up for it in the past few years (before the pandemic, mind) by going to steam days at the Epping Ongar Railway, which includes RT bus rides through the Forest all the way to Shenfield.
I had no idea about those 146s out in the country down south. Never even heard of Downe until just now! 😳

Oh wow! Brilliant footage of one of my local routes, the 89, at Eltham Well Hall Station, Blackheath and Shooters Hill. Nice to see the 146 too, as I used to work the Orpington & District 858 which connected with it at Downe. Never thought I would see a video of these routes! THANKS!

When I was a youngster/LT bus spotter, then living in Iver, I wrote to LTEx about a rumour I'd heard they were selling off RTs. Got a letter, somewhere : they confirmed, at £100 per. I do have x 4 rad badges of the Reds. Just wish I'd had sdriver on me when I visited Windsor garage (same but in green).

I have had the privilege of driving an ex-London RT bus for the very first time, and ended up driving it through London's West End, during rush hour. What and experience?

Probably filmed around 1975, by then there were less than 1000 RTs still running, as many of the DMS Fleetlines replaced the later RTs, and all had finished by 1979.

We would like to hear the glorious sound of the AEC engines and Wilson gearboxes. NOT some irrelevant whistling, clapping music!

If I had AEC engines and Wilson gearboxes I would, be thankful for small mercies or go look for the AEC engines and Wilson gearboxes and bring them to me :)
