    More About Image Comics: Image Comics is an American comic book publisher. It was founded in 1992 by several high-profile illustrators as a venue where comics creators could publish their material without giving up the copyrights to the characters they created, as creator-owned properties. It was immediately successful, and remains one of the largest comic book publishers in North America. Its output was originally dominated by superhero and fantasy series from the studios of the Image partners, but now includes comics in many genres by numerous independent creators. Its best-known series include Spawn, Savage Dragon, Witchblade, The Darkness, Invincible, The Walking Dead, Saga, and Chew.

    No mention of Tony Moore, the Artist who created the Walking Dead? The guy who was screwed out of ownership of the characters he created. They very thing Image was supposedly founded to stop?

    • @Grimmsect
      @Grimmsect 6 років тому +26

      Um.... It's The Walking Dead? How do you actually own the visual rights to a mere human character?
      You literally can't copyright a t-shirt and jeans and a normal every day hair style.... The only thing that makes them actual characters are the personalities attached to them, which are Kirkman's.
      An artist doesn't create human characters, not a single decision would have been his. Their ages, nationalities, weight, outfit, all would have been decided by Kirkman, so he created nothing, he simply drew somebody else's creation.
      When an artist owns the copyright to a comic character, they specifically own the rights to the costume. Which is why Image originally were all superhero stuff. The spandex suit.
      All of the outfits drawn by Moore exist in reality, therefore their design is attributed to the actual fashion designer who designed the original outfit, not a comic artist..

    • @thephilosopher7173
      @thephilosopher7173 6 років тому +30

      I don't think that was his point. I don't know what he's talking about personally but I think he's bringing up a situation similar to Stan Lee & Jack Kirby. That you help design a character (which you can't deny him of doing regardless of aesthetic) and that he's not recognized for it.

    • @joshuahoeppner597

      The Philosoper has kinda got what I'm talking about. I don't really care about the legal issues (In fact, the specific case I'm referencing was settled). I just think it is a shame that they left it out of the documentary. Image was based on the idea of Artist's Rights, and the book they are crediting as "saving Image" went through a period of legal dispute about that very thing. It seems pretty hypocritical, and I am curious what the founders thought of this.

    Valentino had indie cred, before Marvel and Image, thanks to his Normalman book, at Aardvark-Vanaheim and Valentino, at Renegade. Image let go many non-core founders, in response to Diamonds threats of financial penalties over late books. Valentino helped draw in people like Bone's Jeff Smith, Eric Shanower's Age of Bronze, A Distant Soil's Colleen Doran.
    Larsen is an abrasive personality and was a major factor in alienating a large segment of the comics community, with statements he made in early interviews. Guys like Jim Lee had to do a lot of damage control every time he opened his mouth. He's mellowed since; but, you can see he doesn't always think before he speaks. Lee isn't a good manager at DC; but, he is far more level-headed in his interactions..

      In the late 1990s', Larsen also was working for Marvel on "Nova," Defenders," and "Spider-Woman." I also noticed this series mostly glossed over the second wave of artists that came to Image in the early years: Larry Stroman, Mike Grell, Hilary Barta, and such. Dale Keown, part of that second wave, got a brief mention. It might be due to the fact that the founders treated the second wave pretty badly. As this documentary has shown, the company was supposed to have been about artist rights, but was really more about specific artists rights, not so much in general. The new boss, same as the old boss is how things wound up, basically.

      It’s not that people suddenly realized it, but that whenever they tried to sell non-superhero stuff it either failed or was hit with outrage. Years ago, we had the Comics Code making it impossible for horror comics and so on. Romance comics stopped selling and then the only ones that were selling for a long time where superhero comics. The 90’s was simply a great time to bring back all the stuff comics used to do or give what indie creators have been doing for years a time in the spotlight.

      There have been different kinds of comic books outside of Super Hero stories for many decades,it's just that Marvel and DC were always the two main games in town and they always mostly published Super Hero comic books.

    Where's something about Tony Moore? The artist that at the very least created many of the Walking Dead characters, it's Neal Adams all over.

      Correct ..time and time again those that gain control become the beast they ran away from ..Not all of them became that way ..but certain individuals for sure are that type of person.There is an animation short : Mark Osborne's MORE,that portrays this exact kind of thing.

    I cant deny success, but im allowed to not like a product. The core principal of IMAGE comics went right out the window with books like Walking Dead. Thats not what ppl wanted from image comics. We wanted the insane art, the ridiculous physiques and the outrageous arsenals. The ppl who bought cyberforce, youngblood, wildcats, brigade, bloodstrike, supreme and stryke force are mostly not the same ppl who bought walking dead.

      @@Ishitonyou666 ive never watched even one episode. Zombies at a base level can be an interesting premise, but frequently the film will be more of a character piece featuring the differences between individuals in that horrific situation... taking that into consideration, and then assuming it will be even more decompressed in the episodic format of a tv show... i just knew it wasnt for me.
