followed the video pretty much step by step, got it working, all is well, copying data from my PC to the NAS now, Thanks, Really appreciate the video and it's ease, now off to figure out PLEX
Great info. Lots of old Windows computers will not be able to get anymore security updates starting around October 2025. You're helping keep these computers out of the landfill. Awesome! Thanks!
Very nice! I want to do this exact setup but I just have three questions : 1. Will using external usb HDD work or it needs to be the internal one? 2. You said that the HDD in the comuper gets wiped when you set FreeNas up. Is there a way to instal a linus OS on the computers disk after the fact and switch between FreeNAS and Linux? 3. Do you know how is the battery consumption on this setup since the laptop will be plugged in 24/7? thanks for making this video I can't wait to try it out :)
My PC HP desktop is unable to boot on usb stick, only on DVD or actual C:/ drive, can install freeNAS on hdd C:/ dual boot Windows 10 home, and use external USB devices HDDs or USB Sticks for NAS Storage??
Hello. At around 3:00 into the video you say that "if you are not using a lap top which is technically, not recommended..." but you don't really elaborate on this. could you explain what you mean by that? are you saying it is not recommended that you install FreeNAS on a desktop? Are you saying it is not recommended that you install that particular hard drive into anything that isn't a lap top? Sorry, i just got a little confused as to what wasn't recommended? Thanks.
Most important was remote desktop. If you only want to use share in same doame you don't even need nas you can just install 10 or 8.1 and make drive itself before shared which will become visible within your network. I watch till end just to rdc and want to access any where globally
I had two issues, small but just two. First, you were showing the process really fast, a more normal pace would've been amazing. Two, you didn't really show a simple method. Other video were more simplified which made things easier to follow. Still gave you a thumbs up.
The clearest video I've seen on this subject so far. Thank you! Hope you wouldn't mind answering a question...if I do this on a Desktop that has 2 Hard Drives, and one has Windows 10 installed, and say I wanted to boot to Windows 10 occasionally, will that be a problem? Meaning, does the FreeNAS install break Windows 10, and then when I boot back to FreeNAS, would it be broken then?
You should be able to boot to windows on a separate hard drive by accessing your bios and selecting what drive to boot from. Both can't be loaded on the same hard drive.
I was thinking about building hard drive array out of some old computer parts. I choose freeNAS because it uses ZFS. A very interesting filing system that make sure the files won't be corrupted. Now that you have shown me how to install makes my job easier. Thank you for your video and time. Subbed.
Thanks for the simple step by step clear video. Can you please do part 2 of this where, I can copy files over from my phone especially pics and videos from phone camera both ios and Android would be great. And a part 3, if there's a way to open it up to the internet in some secure fashion with say rest of my family in othee homes/cities.
Can you make a tutorial about, How to Install TrueNas and Plugins on same SSD (by splitting the SSD) ? That would be so helpful. Regards from Sri Lanka
First of all great video. I just wanted to know can I transfer files from any other computer using an internet connection or can I only transfer files to the NAS if it is on the same network?
nice video! i just saw some unraid stuff and thought it would be way more technical or harder to set up than unraid but it seems to be pretty simple if you just want a basic NAS server. i just have one question: if i have multiple drives in the NAS and configure them into a pool, how will they be configured? which type of RAID will it use?
Nice clear explanation thanks. Any reason you chose Window's shares other than you're on a Windows Machine? As my computers ar Mac can you see any issue with me setting up Apple shares? My phone is Android so maybe that would have issues.
What is the actual size of FreeNAS expanded/unzipped OS? I know he used a 32Gb stick but curious what the limitations are as I don't want to use a 32Gb unless I have to but I also cannot see a 7Gb compression hitting ~32Gb.... thanks in advance.

Does the FreeNAS host have any way to run GUI applications like a WebBrowser (for researching stuff and taking notes online). If a FreeNAS host has VMs, how do you access them? Can you sit at the host and access your VMs there? I understand the primary purpose of a server is to provide services to remote machines, not to run everyday desktop apps, but being able to at least access a WebBrowser or see your VMs without requiring going to a second machine to connect it...
Thanks I have an old hp desktop with a 2 tb drive. Now i know what I am going to do with it. Another system drive died and I lost files I wanted. future problems solved.
Is there an option that you know of to add a hard drive with terabytes of media already on it? Without it being wiped? When you are adding the hard-drive in the video I saw a another button next to it that said add data....
has anyone had any issues? like how do you know that the usb has freenas installed? because my server wont boot into it, even after it said freenas was installed into the usb. just wont boot into freenas
Hey long time subscriber here - I think even before 10K :D but this already have me a pretty nice trip down memory lane :D Just searched for Nas tutorials as I'm wanting to build my own to store all my video data and well saw your channel :D Crazy how far you have come from even mid 2020 Do you know the specs of your old yoga book? I'm looking for what the minimum spec should be I can go with :)
I have tried, everything works fine until I want to copy things to my NAS. It won't let me copy any large files (like say 600 mb) and won't let me delete any files.
Would repurposing an old desktop PC be cheaper than buying a Synology? I'm looking to run a Plex server with NAS Drives. Mostly direct play with maybe some remote viewing.

would you be able to use external hard drives too? I have a probox 4-bay enclosure and I would like to use it on this set up. would it be possible to use this? would it be detected by the free nass software?
Hi new to FreeNAS, do i have to boot it in a USB drive, not to the actual hard drive? or I need an external device to boot (USB) because when I set up a samba share the entire drive (when creating a pool 10:05) will be erased?

How do you produce that sound with your vocal chords!?
Yesss please make a video on VMs and port forwarding
Keep in mind that port forwarding opens that port open to the entire internet including the shady side of it as well. Make sure you secure it...

BTW, I would like to see you post a more in depth guide on FreeNAS; your method of explanation is easy to grasp and apply. 👍🏿
Notice in the reflection of his pc case's glass that his bed isn't exactly 100% xD Awe This guy puts us first instead of bed, dam that dedication xD.
couldn't you make multiple partitions on your drive? one for the OS rest for storage.
Thats a good question I might look into that
No, ZFS doesn't work like that
does it work with external hdd's? i have 2TB

Makes sense since you can't connect using an iPhone, iPhone's aren't slightly open source, while Android it's.
This tutorial is okay, but my question is how do perform this process if I'm using a desktop device as my backup server for my job?
I had two issues, small but just two. First, you were showing the process really fast, a more normal pace would've been amazing. Two, you didn't really show a simple method. Other video were more simplified which made things easier to follow. Still gave you a thumbs up.

Wait so if the usb gets wrecked then wouldn't I lose all the data on the drive since raid data can't be recovered or something?

that depends if you port forward it ;)

could you partition the HDD and use the seperate partition to boot? I dont like the idea of having to ue a usb the whole time...
Think you should change the title to setup FreeNAS with SMB not Cloud NAS.
I would do this for a PLEX server, would that work?

If you partition the hardrive could you install freenas on one partition and use the rest as samba instead off using a usb
