- "Goodbye" was written by Gordon Jenkins in 1935. Frank Sinatra recorded the song for his 1958 Capitol album, Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely, arranged by Nelson Riddle and conducted by Felix Slatkin.
I'm 25 years old I grew up with my grandparents but they were teens of the 70s so Frank was before their time but they told me when they got older they respected his music i discovered Frank through UA-cam at 14 in 2010 because at that time I also discovered Elvis Presley and I became a lifetime fan so I wanted to discover other music artists from the 50s and 60s Frank was one and Dean Martin was another one. Music artists today no longer sing from the heart anymore it's all about money not about their work we will never see music artists like Elvis Presley,Dean Martin,Frank Sinatra ever again in our lifetime it's sad that today's music is soo stupid i have to go back to the 70s 80s 60s 50s for good music and as time goes by it will only get worse in today's music industry but thank God in heaven for blessing these guys from a gone era with an amazing gift to sing and leaving all their music behind for future generations to hear.
Great taste Frank is amazing… my way, New York New York, and goodbye is my favorite songs by him… and fly away is great as well 🎵
The absolute epitome of human heartbreak set to majestic music, sung by the greatest ballad vocalist of all time, the masterful Francis Albert Sinatra. This album ( Only The Lonely) is probably the most devastating meditation on loneliness and despair ever recorded, but at the same time it is a monumental masterpiece, a great work of art, and contains arguably the greatest recorded male vocal performance for this genre of music period.
What he said ^ I had the privilege to see Sinatra live in the Albert Hall on his last UK tour, and although there has been much water under bridge since, my life would not have been complete had I not experienced it. A truly great and unique experience. Raymondo.
Poetic words 🤘🏽
No one can sing these types of songs as well as Sinatra.
Nobody has ever sung better about acute loneliness, than Frank.
Apparently during the recording of this album, Frank's divorce with Ava had
finally taken place. Nelson Riddle's mother and baby daughter had also
unexpectedly died.
The sense of utter heartbreak shadows all the tracks on this bleak masterpiece.
It speaks volumes Frank said "OTL" was his own personal favorite.
This is such a underrated song the strings, the atmosphere, and Sinatra’s voice just makes this song so good such an underrated song and album
Soothed my soul right when I needed. Break ups are terrible. This is why I should've married Frank when I was three and he was still alive 😭
+Leah Marie Sawyer That's far too young...
+Hi Everybody! Thank you captain obvious lol
+Leah Marie Sawyer Do you know the worst type of break up? Someone who breaks up with you just after they've won the lottery! (◕‿◕)
The worst is actually when someone leaves you for your close friend. The lottery is just about money and not love.
Your so right shigsho
After 10,000 (probably more) hours of listening to Frank Sinatra, OTL is his finest work.
Every song he sings he GETS IT completely and so does the band. This is perfection in so many ways. Thank you, Frank. You're the best. And you always will be.
Michael Ty Cobb I agree with you. It’s a masterpiece. His daughter Nancy said that this was Frank’s favourite album, mine too.
Hate to say the greatest on anything, but I'll bet Frank would say it was HIS greatest album...
Purchased this album in the 60's.....best musical purchase l ever made...and never tire hearing the songs.
Sinatra: could be talking for the emotion in his work...great phrasing impeccable diction and clarity but for heart deep feeling donny Hathaway
@@colsomemiah6095 To my way of thinking, the more artists that perform this music, the better for our society.
At the very end this was Sinatra's exit song. NO he didn't sing it but he left the stage with it being played by the orchestra..no vocal. For longtime fans who knew the song it was a killer moment.
True. I listened to this song played at the end of a show I saw yesterday , and it sent shivers down my spine...
Thought it was Angel Eyes.
I did not know that the orchestra played this plangent melody after Sinatra exited the stage. Such class. Thanks.
A song like Goodbye by Gordon Jenkins could only have been written in America, yet it has the haunted quality of European romanticism.
As Benny Green said of The Song is You, it came out of a period of American music that can never come again.
Iam from India tamil nadu frank Sinatra is 🖤🖤🖤🖤 I can't imagine a day without him
VERY WELL SAID! MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY!!!!
I'm from Roma, Italia... I hear Sinatra every day too... It's too good
Better to have been in love and lost rather than never been in love. Heartache and wisdom is the making of all of us. Thank you Frank and Van and Eretha for the soul. Cheers.
I'm a 90s kid and I love Sinatra. I discovered him through Spotify. The way I see it, if it was still all records/cassettes/CDs I never would have heard his music!

I cannot imagine anyone performing this song with deeper feeling especially at the. end.
And Riddle captures this same emotion like the genius he was.
When I was at high class restaurant I hear frank when I went to any beautiful place I hear frank ...No one like you frank you are some one very special, ,No one will be like you ever and never we will be always loves you
Mr. Sinatra always puts his heart into what he sings and this ballad is no exception. Thanks for sharing.
B Bro I agree with you. Frank once said that whatever anyone said about him, when he sang he believed.
I've been listening to this album since 1960, in all its iterations. Best music ever produced in any genre, IMHO.
I'm born in 1989 and I agree
Gordon Jenkins wrote the song. His son wrote a book in search of his father which I have never been able to find.
The melody was played at the end of a concert after Sinatra had left the stage. Just the orchestra and the empty stage.
i have the book bought it in D.C. AUTOGRAPHED BY HIS SON....the lyric is about a GF of Jenkins who died after a back room abortion and died .
The ultimate sad song, sung by the master of sad songs, Mr. Sinatra!
An all-time great song and interpretation. Riddle's arrangement is timeless. Sinatra was born to sing these songs.
One of the most beautiful haunting melodies sung here by one of the greatest vocalists ever
My German Shepard had to be put to sleep over the weekend. She was only 7 years old. Goodbye my friend I shall love and miss you forever 💖💖💖
+the king -- My condolences for your profound loss, friend. Grief can only last a lifetime, but love lasts forever. If you've not read the "Rainbow Bridge" poem, perhaps it will help: www.rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm
(I'm also a fan of EP -- yesterday was his 85th birthday, as you likely know.)
I still cry over mine.
This is one of my favorite Sinatra album. I've had it for years, but never studied the photograph until a few years ago -- it tells Frank's story at a certain time in his life but he got away from what it shows. But not without pain. That happens to all of us who lose someone we love, be it parents, family, spouse, lover, even a beloved pet. All of those losses hurt terribly but life wants to go on and usually does, time heals, but you never forget!
Frank Sinatra sings Gordon Jenkins song 'Goodbye' in a very sensitive and sincere manner.
Frank sang so many great songs but this is my favorite. Heart-breaking.
I saw Art Pepper cover this a few weeks before he died.....looked me straight in the eye and said Goodbye.
If one can have but only two Sinatra albums, they would be this and "Songs For Swingin' Lovers!".
This and Wee Small Hours for me!
Let's say farewell with a sigh. GREAT LINE !!
Frank was and is simply the best ever especially to Me being part Sicilian myself. Great Voice. Heartbreaking song.
“Goodbye” is on my list of favorites by several artists. This video, showing Eva and Frank together (the reason for the album was his broken heart) sort of shocked me-would anyone get away with showing the world photos of the person who broke your life into little pieces in an official video in this period?
"" (sometimes written "") is a song by American composer and arranger Gordon Jenkins, published in 1935. It became well known as the closing theme song of the Benny Goodman orchestra.
this one certainty tugs at the heart string what a singer.
A good guy , with a big heart and soul , like another I knew . Both with amazing voices .
Just amazing singing.
ohhh this is THAT song, oh man, this song is so powerful
my favorite album from Frank...and though he had many other great ones....i think his singing on the entire album is the finest he has ever achieved....
What a voice - the way he holds the note in that final 'goodbye' is heartbreaking - you can really hear the pain and sadness. I guess he could never really get over Ava.
You are so correct.
Netnite62 Miller Could anyone ever get over Ava?
Great point! She was so beautiful it hurt.
Love this song !!!!!!!
I ll never forget how we promised one day,
To love one another another forever that way....
two years later and that was the best thing that could happen to me
Mr. Sinitra is a Great Jazz Singer.
Ava, was Old Blue Eye's one great love, above all the rest!
Yep. For sure. Do think that you only love one person in your life. Truly. And for Frank it was Ava.
AWESOME!!!
I'll never forget you.
I'll never forget you.
I'll never forget how we promised one day,
To love one another forever that way.
We said we'd never say, "Good-bye."
But that was long ago.
Now you've forgotten, I know.
No use to wonder why.
Let's say farewell with a sigh.
Let love die.
But we'll go on living,
Our own way of living.
So you take the high road and I'll take the low.
It's time that we parted,
It's much better so.
But kiss me as you go.
Good-bye.
But that was long ago.
Now you've forgotten, I know.
No use to wonder why.
Let's say farewell with a sigh.
Let love die.
But we'll go on living,
Our own way of living.
So you take that high road and I'll take the low.
It's time that we parted,
It's much better so.
But kiss you as you go.
Good-bye. Good-bye. Good-bye.
Hi @Nenethegreat W! Sorry if my comment anyhow disturbed you. I just wanted to make easier for some people to sing and listen to this great song at the same time. Stay safe and blessed!
Thank you@Rock Nouveau ! God bless you and your family . Stay safe during this pandemic! Hugs❤
Also listen to version sung by Dinah Washington.
@@roziharutyunyan3575 Thanks for posting the lyrics. It helps many non english speakers to understand the meaning of the song.
Thank you
A Picture is Worth a Thousand words,
A Song like this, It is Unparalleled and Carries a Deep Message.
To someone that we care deeply. We all say Goodbye eventually.
I cried so much that I actually stained Tyler's prop.
My heart
Phenomenal. Just…phenomenal.
One of his best songs ever (which is saying a lot)! Happy Birthday, Chairman! We love you!
Bonnie Lou Williams brought me here Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
To me, Ava was the most beautiful woman ever. Absolutely stunning. May they both rest in peace.
Benny Goodman's theme song hauntingly sung by Mr. Sinatra -- to perfection.
Magical,,Frank Sinatra,,,the very best,
A broken heart can be the best catalyst for a singer or musician or artist. This was after his divorce from Ava Gardner.
You're only projecting what you wish he felt about Ava. I don't think he gave a hoot. That's his personality.
@@lesliecolonello9320 he was on the phone with her pleading for her love. He told her he was going to kill himself. While still on the phone with her he shot a gun into a pillow. The only problem was he pulled the trigger twice. She laughed.
@@lesliecolonello9320 I'm not projecting what I wish he felt about her, I'm talking about my own experience. That's a hell of a reach on your part. That's sounds real strange coming from someone who doesn't know me. It makes no difference to me what he felt about her.
I just want to say,as someone who has just come across this page ,how much ive enjoyed the sparring, of some highly interlectual, people,im the biggest fan of sinatra ever, and have read a couple of books about him, but your brilliant resume.on frank and ava story ,is just wonderfull writng ,well it is to me,i loved it ,patricia walton.many thanks ,and to all the others on this page its just brilliant stuff..
I don't think anyone can bring more pathos to a song. FS at his best.
My favorite album but the chairman of the board 💕
Merci Monsieur Gordon Jenkins (1910-1984) une réussite exceptionnelle pour ce merveilleux enregistrement avec Sinatra
Thanks for the post.
Aloha Frank Sinatra and Bob Barry !!!! Thanks for posting the awesome "Goodbye." Your fan, Robert S.J. Hu August 26, 2020.
Thanks again, Frank.
Buffff. Esto es música con mayúsculas. Esta pieza es la perfección absoluta. Musica atemporal que cada vez suena mejor y mejor y mejor. Y Sinatra fue unico e irrepetible. El primero y el último.
It seems that Gordon Jenkins wrote only the lyric for this song. It appears that the melody - which is the most important part of any song - was written by Joe Bishop, a member of the Isham Jones' band, who called it "Blue Prelude". Jenkins added a lyric and presented the song to Goodman as a closing theme for his radio program. Goodman immediately adopted it for his closing theme.
Gràcies per la info
Perfection.
sigh.. oh the people we love.. if only we could save these experiences for others.. Hark the Herald Angels Sing..
stupendous
God Speed Frank Sinatra....
Awesome.
Brilliant
The greatest ever ....
Well done tribute Bob. Captivating.
Thank you, Jeff!
this is memories song by frank sinatra this is very2 legend aktris

The Definitive version of a song that was the "sign off" song for the Benny Goodman band. Frank "owns" this song
The accomplishede arranger Gordon Jenkins did not write many songs but the ones he did write are unforgettable.
Listen to *This is All I Ask* sung by Robert Goulet (UA-cam).
His son Bruce wrote a memoir of his Dad, *Goodbye - In Search of Gordon Jenkins*.
wonderful Sinatra is very, very blue! bravo!
GOODBYE will never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never BE SAID FOR SINATRA SINGING
Makes me remember my first love....... we've all been through it probably! Lovely song. The Linda Ronstadt version's not bad either.
+Marion Newberry
Frank's sublime offering soars, although Linda's version with Nelson Riddle (1983's "What's New") nearly equals.
I agree. Linda Ronstadt's version of the song was also arranged by Nelson Riddle. Her version is just as good as Frank's version
I have Linda's album.. have had since I was 11. Beautiful rendition
You did this one for me franky
GOODBYE!!! YES! GO! THANK YOU! BE GONE!
De meest gevoelige Sinatra ❤️
Check out the Stan Getz recording of this from the album Cool Velvet.
Great cover. Think this was a hit for Dorsey & Sinatra too!
a brother of a war home thanks
BONITA by Frank Sinatra.
a marine of a song ! of a war 1975 home
💔goodbye
The stunning brunette that appears in many of the stills in this video, is Ava Gardner.
Linda Ronstadt version similar as also under the direction of Nelson Riddle. Fine stuff.
Adeus querido Richard♥️🌷🍃🇧🇷
سلام. نوع موسیقی که آقای سیناترا اجرا میکردند بسیار زیبا بودومن همیشه آهنگهای ایشان راگوش میکنم ولذت میبرم.یادشان گرامی باد.ایران
"Rock & Roll is the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear."
Francis Albert Sinatra
He never had to endure a moment of Rap. Street smut spewed with a third grade vocabulary.
No use to wonder why..
Let's say farewell with a sigh;
Let love die.
But we'll go on living, our own way of living.
So you take that high road and I'll take the low.
It's time that we parted, it's much better so..
I'm more impressed with the photos than the song. Don't get me wrong, the song is great and the best of the best put it together. I just want to say the photos made it fun. The last shot. I wanted to go with him.
I’m dealing with this… divorce… she came from another country and bought a ticket back home. When she leaves, the country won’t let her back because she didn’t update her greencard. She’s begging me to file divorce and it’s so hard because a part of my heart is still with her. But I have to do it, but it’s just sad that we’ll never see eachother again due to our circumstances. I don’t think I’ll ever go through the greencard process again when she’s gone. We’ve been married for about 6 years now…. It’s become part of my identity.
Ava and Frank were perfect
This is not the recording on the CD. It must have been on tape or vinyl. Get the CD while you can. Though this is great recording, the CD is a theme album with the Nelson Riddle band and is frankly wonderful. I know the original orchestra that was supposed to back Frank for the recording had other commitments and the Nelson Riddle band was used in it's place it is an unparalleled performance and a stunning CD.
I wish those two never divorced
Benny Goodman's closing theme.
Apparently this album was Sinatra's Winterreise. Or Der Doppelganger.
Screw the past. Move on to maintain sanity!
I am so sorry to be this person, but anyone hear the twilight soundtrack in the opening notes? I just realized it might have been lifted from this.
