    My tip. DON'T buy things in city centres. Glasgow and Edinburgh. You'll get ripped off. Shop where the ordinary working-class people shop and yuu'll save £££. Pound shops are fantastic. As is B&M and Home Bargains and the like. I hate seeing our visitors getting 'taken' with super-high prices. Lidl and Aldi will save you tons on food expenses.

    14:30 - that's the same with most things in Edinburgh (and London!). Places that are very tourist-y and gentrified tend to attract higher prices because of the type of people they attract.
    Go to anywhere else (whether it be a fairly decent place like Glasgow or a total shithole) and you can usually find the same commodities - usually the exact same branded items - for much cheaper prices.
    Basically, Edinburgh is a premium place to live and so it will command premium prices for everything. Like London. And Bristol. And Manchester, as that's now an "up and coming" city.

    Thanks for this video. I know you made it awhile ago, but the information is both helpful and useful. Currently, I'm trying to find a way to move to Edinburgh from the United States. Every attempt I make seems to push me further and further from that goal. The hope of getting a Work Visa seems near impossible. However, I keep doing research and keep submitting CVs, in hopes someone will consider sponsoring me. I've also asked some UA-camrs questions regarding trying to move. But, most never respond to my questions. So, videos like this at least share information I can add to my knowledgebase. Thanks for this video, and I look forward to your new ones, as well as catching up on the ones I haven't seen just yet.

    Yay! :D

    Lovely vlog and some useful insights. I am happy that you're loving life in E'burgh - I'm a Scot living in London but about to move back to Glasgow but Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities ever.
    You really need to clarify the CT situation. As a rule of thumb the following is true. If you live in an HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) the CT will be included in the rent. If you live in a self-contained apartment then you'll be personally liable for the CT. Being a strudent is immaterial.
    The boxroom trope is unhelpful. If the boxroom is part of an HMO then you are, possibly, making the landlord liable for extra CT and are certainly invalidating his housing insurance.
    I have 4 flats around London that I let to students. All are well maintained and all are priced reasonably. Two have large storage rooms that could be squatted in. Do not do it, though. You may get a 'free'place to lay your head but you are heaping liabilities on the landlord. If you can't afford your own place then do not freeload on an ethical landlord.

    A bit of an important question. Should I be worried about Scotland wanting to be independent and the whole thing with Brexit? Should I still stick to my goal to move there and stay? You mentioned you were coming from Puerto Rico? I see Brexit was a massive hit to anyone from the EU, or anyone who is doing business from the UK with the EU. I am both, so for me the independence comes with upsides, but you're right to think that you might fly right into a harder period of time for Scotland, the period between cutting UK off and before stepping back into EU. Especially considering it'd be relatively soon after the pandemic - honestly if I were you I might be more worried about the lingering effects of that.
      TLDR news has some good videos on it, you should have a watch .)

One thing that will be pretty hard for me ( I think) will be finding love with a Scottish woman. I've never had success with that before and finding a partner in Scotland is apparently very different from what I'm used to. You voted to stop uncontrolled illegal immigration (and mind you, Scotland - which is the theme of this video - didn't say yes to Brexit, so I'm not sure what "we" you're talking about). If you're equaling illegal immigration to legal movement of skilled and educated people who will pay your taxes and contribute to the wellbeing of local society and economy, you've got a problem.

      The Scottish people voted by 62% to stay in the EU.
      The Scottish parliament voted by 69-59 in favour of IndyRef2.
      The SNP had it in there election manifesto that if there is a significant change such as Scotland being forced out of the EU then there should be another independence referendum. The SNP won that election.
      Westminster has ignored the Scottish people, the Scottish parliament and the Scottish government.
      In an independent Scotland the Scottish people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not be governed by the government that another country voted for.

      Hmmm it depends on where you're coming from - unfortunately this is a bit of a turbulent and uncertain time even for Europeans wanting to come in so for now it might be the best to wait and see how Brexit turns out - it's not unlikely that Scotland will try for independence again after it, and indie Scotland might be easier to move to than post-Brexit UK!

      I don't think she meant it was more flattering than being Czech, but rather it was just a kind way to correct people. She's not saying one is better than another, or getting upset when people guess wrong. That's what I understood from it.

    I'm from Puerto Rico and have always wanted to move out as soon as I possibly could. I was thinking of moving to north carolina but I've recently discovered that I absolutely love Scotland and I would love to live there. I was thinking of going in about 4 years and finish my masters degree in Scotland. After watching this video though and some others I'm a bit scared and worried I won't be able to afford rent, college and food. I really want to meet people too and date. I would be completely alone in Scotland far away from my family and I wouldn't even be able to visit on holidays.

    • @hyperboy4803

      It would be a big move for sure! It’s definitely not an easy decision - I think if you had access to some sort of student loan or a scholarship, that’d help a lot during your studies, but I realise that’s not an easy resource to have available. But I can’t imagine you’d feel lonely for long, locals are very open to making friends 🖤

    • @hyperboy4803
      @hyperboy4803 3 роки тому

      @@Kakibot Thank you for replying! I don't know how I would go about trying to get a scholarship or student loan as I don't know much of how that works and I'm a foreigner too. But I'd have to research it thoroughly. I wouldn't want to share an apartment with strangers either. One of the things I'd like to do quickly is to find love. Another problem I have is that I don't think I would be able to visit Scotland prior to going there permanently unless I saved up a lot. Overall I have the guts to pull off such a big move (probably the biggest of my life) but it really scares me at the same time. Wish I had someone living there who could help me but if it's true that people there help just about anyone I should be okay? I have a few years to think about it I suppose but I should decide if I'm going 1 or 2 years before I go.

    Such a useful video! I'm from Belgium and I'm thinking of moving to Scotland, but with my bachelor's degree in teaching (Dutch and Latin) I'm not sure if I'll get a job there very easily ... Also, how do you even start planning your relocation? Where do you begin?

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  5 років тому +3

      For me the start was being sure my uni would accept me - so now I think I'd start with looking at jobs! I have friends who are currently working on moving to Scotland and their strategy is usually visiting Scotland once or twice and attending interviews where necessary (I see that many of them actually do their interviews through Skype only and I did witness this leading to a successful job offer!) before moving here "full time". Knowing where you're gonna work and what you're gonna get for it is deffo the best base for planning out everything else!
      (You could even look into freelance teaching, but I think that'd be better as a side gig!)

    • @Lisaaatjeeeh
      @Lisaaatjeeeh 5 років тому +3

      Thanks you! It's good to know I don't have to move there first to get a job. Besides, I didn't know Skype interviews were actually a common thing. I'm still thinking of going for a master's degree in Belgium. And while that'll require working as a teacher and studying at the same time, it'll definitely increase my chances of finding a job abroad.

    Just remember Edinburgh isn't Scotland, there are no Scots there and it will cost you a fortune to rent a tiny damp apartment. Personally, I think you'd have to be mad to leave a city such as Prague or Budapest to come to such a place, especially to attend a 3rd rate institution such as Napier ( whose lowly TES ranking is inflated by their high scoring "international outlook" criteria i.e. nothing to do with academic excellence). Good luck anyway, it seems your early years were a struggle and you came through it and I'm sure you'll be a better person having had the character building experience. Next question, how can one escape Scotland for Prague.

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  5 років тому +5

      I think you might be idealising the situation in Prague - admittedly I was renting out a cheap black market apartment there before I moved to Edinburgh so the costs were lower, but trust me, the dampness level and the one window with iron bars over it were not that great. These days the housing market in Prague is not doing amazingly so living there costs almost the same as Edinburgh, especially when you don't want to live in what would be the Prague equivalent of Fife (nothing against Fife but I would not want to commute car-less from Fife to central Edinburgh daily). We look at moving to Prague pretty much annually and so far the only real motivation would be a pretty self-employed-friendly tax set-up. But if you ever need any tips on making the move I'd be happy to help with the little knowledge I have left about life in Prague!
      Regarding Napier I went there to learn the specific skills for the job and that has been a successful endeavour. I could've stayed in Prague to get an MSc in Media Studies and be able to research the pre-war circulars of Ukraine but I'm genuinely glad I haven't. Maybe it was a risk to take but it worked well for my style of learning!
