  • I explore using the Arturia DrumBrute's 12 individual outputs through a Presonus StudioLive AR16 mixer. The extra outputs give flexibility over end results and applying effects using Ableton Live. I've always wanted to try this - so this video is a bit of trial and error. As I learn, I hope something in this video is useful to you.
    The mixer boasts an 18 channel digital audio interface via USB. It has 4 return channels and a Loopback feature. You can record directly onto the mixer via SD Card. It also has a "fat" channel where you can use Bluetooth audio as an input (among other possibilities).
    I show how to use Ableton Live built-in effects, panning, delays, filters and overdrive/distortion on individual drumbrute sounds.
    There are computer screen views, close-ups and birds-eye view.
    The intro has bonus audio from Deepmind 12 synthesizer.
    All work is non-commercial and not sponsored in anyway.

    Excellent video. Great demo over the Drumbrute's individual outs. I use a Soundcraft Signature 22MTK which has basically the same functions as the Persons StudioLive AR16. I use Logic Pro instead on Ableton but the principles are the same. When I mix I use the plugins from Logic to enhance the sounds of the Drumbrute. So many gear snobs look down on this drum machine because it's an analogue drum machine and it doesn't have a ton of samples. For me this drum machine is a modern throwback to the vintage drum machines but it has it's own character and it's a pleasure to use. It's my favorite beat making machine in my studio. Thank you for showcasing what it can really do

      Hi Luke, thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it :) Good luck with your DrumBRUTE and the 22MTK is a nice mixer! I've tried it out, and liked the interface a lot. Cheers, Ranzee

    Him, amazing video. I have a big problem with the ar 16. When i add audio effects in the ableton channel, they don't come out of the presonus. What can i be doing wrong? Thanks!

    Are the cables for separate outs standard mini jacks to jacks? And is the signal mono?

    Exactly the demo I was looking for. Thanks a lot! How about the latency of the USB driver?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 років тому

      Hi Mo Batista! Thanks for watching :) Great question! The audio interface is only USB 2.0 - so if latency is critical for you, I'd go for one of their higher end mixers. I'm not sure of the actual figures - but I'm sure the Presonus website will list the StudioLive AR mixer specs. However, the intended use - is more to multi-track a recording. PreSonus do USB 3.0 interfaces like the Studio192 (which I have, and use as my main recording IO) - and these have much lower latency.

      I got it, thanks. I'm kinda between the Behringer UFX16 I guess it is called and the AR line. I have a negative track history though with audio gear hooked up via usb. There's often times all kind of static dirty coming from the PC. I guess I be ordering both and take it from there. Thanks again for the heads up. Have a good one :)

    so the mixer eliminates the need for a separate audio interface?

    Hey mate! Great video. After 25 years of only analog recording, I have finally decided to take the plunge into recording on a DAW and I just bought this mixer. Easy question for you - do you have a specific brand USB cable that you use to go from the Presonus to the computer? Thanks!

      Hi, they're Hosa cables. 1/4" to 3.5mm TS (mono).

    Hi Ranzee and thank you for this very informative video.
    Can you tell me how many outputs appear in the console audio preferences in Ableto live?
    (Channel configuration - Output Config).
    The idea is to know if it is possible to use 2 of the 4 outputs to bring out the sound of an instrument plugin, on which I will use an effect pedal, to plug it into an audio track.
    For this, I need 4 independent outputs in ableton Live.
    Thank you very much for your help.

      Depends on the model, as they've changed their offerings since filming this 4.5 years ago - best bet is to head on over to Presonus website and check out their current specs.

      @@danyrockjr Hey DRG. Did you find out this info? I’m also looking for a mixer/interface that will allow me to use my Strymon pedals as send/return FX for multiple hardware inputs at the same time.

    What is the source of the bassline? Is it from ableton or do you have a hardware synth connected to the drumbrute as well? Sorry if it's a silly question. Thanks.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 років тому +1

      Hi yoitsgiook :) The TB-03 bassline comes in via channel 13/14 on the mixer and is connected via the analog output of the unit. You can just see the silver/gray side of it underneath the yellow cable connected to the laptop. (from the top view - as seen here: ua-cam.com/video/fWXv1tPTv0M/v-deo.html). You can also see the signal coming into ableton in this part of the video: ua-cam.com/video/fWXv1tPTv0M/v-deo.html.

      Hi - I don't have this mixer anymore, and haven't since probably 4 years ago. You may need to pop into a music store and try it out. All I can show you is what is in the videos :)

    So there is no way for you to send eq or effects enabled tracks to the DAW via usb?Too bad there is no way to toggle pre vs post send.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 років тому +1

      Hi Funkbutterfly! You can via the master mix - which is a digital channel. Individual channels send pre ... What I didn't try though, is there's 2 channels with inserts - that might do what you're after ... but it will need to be confirmed.

    does the mixer send the channels Pre- EQ or Post- EQ??

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  4 роки тому

      Hey Boi Mesa, off the top of my head I'm fairly sure it is pre-EQ. That way you can return it to another channel and add the EQ. However to be 100% certain, it would be worth checking the manual - which I don't have anymore :)

      I don't think so - It has to be class compliant USB audio - and this isn't. Check out the Tascam.
