I'm sure a lot of people are calling these videos stupid but these are great for people that know nothing about wood and want to start things correctly.
Yes! Very true. I've never touched a saw in my life. Decided to start make a table for my bedroom studio this quarantine. Very helpful video for us noobs.😁
There's nothing like covering the basics, get that down to a fine art, and you'll be set. Of course, you could always drop a small fortune on a drop saw, and rely on power tools to do all the work😜 I did a joinery course last year, and haven't touched timber for 10 months, hence the refresher. One of the best Handtools/minimalist woodworking books I've read was written by a musician, who took his former training to the joinery class. So while most would rely on power tools, he advised to practice doing a series of cuts on a piece of scrap, to get used to the feel of the saw, and hone your skills.
Hi, I don't usually leave comments on UA-cam videos. In fact, I believe that this is my first one in nearly 10 years. I just wanted to say that thanks to your videos, I built my own wall mounted desk using brackets and a butcher slab made of walnut. May not be much, but for someone who's spent the majority of his life in tech, and not handiwork, it's quite an achievement.

@@RusticDavid What about sawing a bedpost headboard off. I got one side off, but it was really tough on the shoulder, it's very hard wood, I'm wondering if I should go motorized.
Hi Counter Strike ,its normal for it to take some effort but possibly a new sharp hand saw will make the work easier if that’s not available try oiling your saw “plate” and making sure its rust free , you can clean the saw with sandpaper just don’t sand the teeth, take your time don’t rush it concentrate on keeping it your saw straight not on the speed, if it “binds in the kerf” ie jams an sticks go back and widen the cut to allow the saw freedom to move Good luck to you Take care during these troubled days Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid Thanks, yeah its a new saw, but I managed to finish it but using the other hand placed on the top of the blade to push it down more, which allowed for a smoother cut.

Oh my goodness! I am so very happy I found you. My father was an amazing carpenter and wonderful teacher, but he's gone now. I have been having a strong desire to build some simple projects, and though my husband used to be a wooden boat builder he seems to have little to no interest in teaching me anything when it comes to carpentry... so I am at a loss in how to learn the foundational elements so that I have a fighting chance at building anything. But here you are, sharing your experience with the world!!! I could hug you and give you a kiss on the cheek for making these vids ( but Australia is thousands of miles away from the NW corner of the US)! I really appreciate you using hand tools, as a beginner, using a table saw is just not something I am going to take on without specific instruction. I am going to get my clamps, hand saw and plywood and build me a box frame for a cabinet (or attempt to) right now! Thank you! I am so very happy!!!
@@RusticDavid I would honestly say a healthy fear is a good thing to have, but that's more in regards to tools because I watched my father cut his fingers off with a skill saw when I was a little kid. I understand what you mean about not being afraid to try something new though, I am just going to be trying new things with handsaws.... you showed me some great tips and tricks about using them. @@RusticDavid Am still using motorized tools on a limited basis. But, except for being swift on the job, they do get old and break down. And that's the time when you need the basic kind of knowledge.
Hi Edgardo I believe that the basic hand tool skills are important,as you say machines break and sometimes the time it takes to set up a machine for one angled cut isn’t worth it when you can do it by hand. I personally work a lot with machinery and whatever it takes to get the job done well and fast as its what brings home the bread! Have a good week!Best Wishes David

Simple tasks that you would want the beginner DIY learner to do that are easy to do but help learn, add experience and develop skiils. 4. More simple lessons like 'How to saw wood straight'. This was a great video.

Great video. I was taught 'let the saw do the work'. In other words no pressure on the blade just pull it back and forth. Some saws are SO SHARP i actually hold them back or the can snag in the wood. Stand the piece on its end and it should stamd up! Great work here for beginners😁

This was a very good you tube video with excellent narration from yourself, it appears you have used very good camera and sound equipment, someone who knew how to use the aforementioned equipment to make a top class video only to have it ruined by loud noise of power tools in the background. This was the first you tube in a long time that really impressed me. I am starting to learn DIY and I would be happy to learn from your videos but please make them without background disturbance. I found it hard to follow your advice. NB: the best DIY video ever!! I will see all of your videos.

Hi. Great instruction video. To the point and detailed. Many many thanks. I watched several other instruction videos from you too. Very useful tips. David, what is the importance of using the whole length of the saw please? If I pull it right up close to the tip, on the next downwards stroke the saw blade tends to bend. How I may I avoid this. Thanks!
Hi Amr thanks for your comment to help prevent the saw from buckling try rocking the handle downwards lifting the tip as you begin the next stroke add some lubricant to the saw plate a little oil or candle wax might help and check your saw is straight at the tip, why use all the saw? to get the maximum momentum you can bear down on the saw more towards the end of the cut with the added mometumand saw faster with less effort happy woodworking David
For a long cut just nail a straight piece on the left of the line. It supports the blade and you dont have to worry about a straight cut. I just finished my first project, a tv stand , using just a saw. Came out beautifully.
I have a cheap tenon saw (I think!) and I am having trouble cutting straight. Cutting 1/2" into a piece. There is no problem on the "top" line, and goes well until the saw gets to the last 1/8" on the depth. It just veers off to the right at the bottom. I have practiced quite a bit and have got closer to a straight cut a few times, but not happy yet! This video will be very useful, and I will try out all the advice! Wish me luck!
Dumb question - does clamping down "flat" and sawing it along the wide side pencil line like you demonstrated rather than clamping the skinny edge into the vise and sawing down that way= better chance of sawing straight? If you understand what I'm asking. My vise wasn't wide enough for my wood so I put it in there skinny side, and sawed down - it ended up not quite straight but good enough. thanks!
Hi Fiaz the zig zags are connected to the set on your saw basicaly this means big teeth more set small teeth less set btw set is the teeth are bent left and right to allow the saw plate to pass through the cut therefore for a finer cut and less deep zig zags use a saw with many small teeth there will always be some saw marks after cutting . please check out my channel for more woodwork videos im uploading regularly . Practice cutting joints start with my half lap video cut joints in scrap wood you will be amazed how quickly you will improve Have a great weekend David

Hello David, thanks for your comments. I do own a drill press, but when big peaces are involved, you can go only so far. Especially when you have to drill horizontally. I am making garage shelves and pieces are 2 meters by 0.6 meters long...
Srdjan Repensek ok so you can drill a block of hard wood of the same thickness on the drill press then clamp it to the sie of the shelf an use it as a guide to drill the shelf straight i hope this helps good luck david
Unfortunately, shelf does not exist, I have a lots of pieces of wood that I need to put together. I see that you drilled some holes, when attached 2 pieces of wood using screws (How to join 2 pieces of wood in the corner with a screw ) Sales person told me that I can drive screws without drilling holes, as he said pine is very soft. Pieces of wood that I bought were soaking wet, and people cut for me to sizes, that I need. I am busy drying those pieces outside in shaded area, after few days I noticed small cracks, around the center of the wood, and that worries me a bit, and leads me to think that I should rather drill before screws, as it may crack further...
well when you say wet do you mean green as in freshly cut or wet from rain? if its green it will need to dry and depending on thickness 1 inch pine depending on drying conditions may take from 60 to 200 days to reach around 20% moisture content the wood will shrink and possibly warp during drying and this means it will need to be milled before gluing i would defiantly drill before screwing to create a tight joint
Hi Paul ,well being left handed shouldn't cause a problem go out and choose yourself a cheap comfortable to hold saw and go and practice on some scraps its worth it with a little practice and good markings you will achieve better and better results. I love rustic theres no straight lines in nature ! Happy Woodworking David

wait till the missus goes out. hahaha... I'm "the missus" and I saw anywhere in my house I happen to feel like it. If my bench is full of stuff I'll clamp wood to the kitchen table or where ever. Thanks for this good practical video requiring no jigs or trips to the store! I wish you could have waited till the machinery was off. Very noisy.

Mmmmm... I thought id removed that observation. On re consideration I thought it the limitation of the camera's zoom ....... I have one similar..... if it is the cameraman please could you ask him not to......... I moved to youtube to escape that........because the bbc wouldn't listen to how distracting and annoying it is.
Hi Victor lumber is wood sawn from a tree into a plank or beam, rough sawn wood .So I would say yes it’s lumber the boards in the video are salvaged from a building site and haven’t been planed or sanded Thanks for your comment Happy Woodworking David
i find it much easier to make a knifeline and den shave carefully all the way down on the waste side with a chisel. and then saw in that. hope u know what i mean. nice sawing btw :)

+Rustic David yes i use it on both. in hardwood i make the trench on all four sides . that way i find it easier to get it dead square. on softwood i only do the top. btw you should post a video about dovetails. would like to see your take on that.

saw looks very sharp. i like it

Hi. Great instruction video. To the point and detailed. Many many thanks. I watched several other instruction videos from you too. Very useful tips. David, what is the importance of using the whole length of the saw please? If I pull it right up close to the tip, on the next downwards stroke the saw blade tends to bend. How I may I avoid this. Thanks!
Hi Amr thanks for your comment to help prevent the saw from buckling try rocking the handle downwards lifting the tip as you begin the next stroke add some lubricant to the saw plate a little oil or candle wax might help and check your saw is straight at the tip, why use all the saw? to get the maximum momentum you can bear down on the saw more towards the end of the cut with the added mometumand saw faster with less effort happy woodworking David

For a long cut just nail a straight piece on the left of the line. It supports the blade and you dont have to worry about a straight cut.

I have a cheap tenon saw (I think!) and I am having trouble cutting straight. Cutting 1/2" into a piece. There is no problem on the "top" line, and goes well until the saw gets to the last 1/8" on the depth. It just veers off to the right at the bottom. I have practiced quite a bit and have got closer to a straight cut a few times, but not happy yet! This video will be very useful, and I will try out all the advice! Wish me luck!

Dumb question - does clamping down "flat" and sawing it along the wide side pencil line like you demonstrated rather than clamping the skinny edge into the vise and sawing down that way= better chance of sawing straight? If you understand what I'm asking. My vise wasn't wide enough for my wood so I put it in there skinny side, and sawed down - it ended up not quite straight but good enough. thanks!
both ways are ok but lie the saw down on the wide side to help keep straight have a great day David
Excellent video. Could you share some basic wood working exercises? Every time i cut there is small zigzags that I have to even out with a file.
Hi Fiaz the zig zags are connected to the set on your saw basicaly this means big teeth more set small teeth less set btw set is the teeth are bent left and right to allow the saw plate to pass through the cut therefore for a finer cut and less deep zig zags use a saw with many small teeth there will always be some saw marks after cutting . please check out my channel for more woodwork videos im uploading regularly . Practice cutting joints start with my half lap video cut joints in scrap wood you will be amazed how quickly you will improve Have a great weekend David

Hello David, thanks for your comments. I do own a drill press, but when big peaces are involved, you can go only so far. Especially when you have to drill horizontally. I am making garage shelves and pieces are 2 meters by 0.6 meters long...
Srdjan Repensek ok so you can drill a block of hard wood of the same thickness on the drill press then clamp it to the sie of the shelf an use it as a guide to drill the shelf straight

Unfortunately, shelf does not exist, I have a lots of pieces of wood that I need to put together. I see that you drilled some holes, when attached 2 pieces of wood using screws (How to join 2 pieces of wood in the corner with a screw ) Sales person told me that I can drive screws without drilling holes, as he said pine is very soft.
Pieces of wood that I bought were soaking wet, and people cut for me to sizes, that I need. I am busy drying those pieces outside in shaded area, after few days I noticed small cracks, around the center of the wood, and that worries me a bit, and leads me to think that I should rather drill before screws, as it may crack further...
well when you say wet do you mean green as in freshly cut or wet from rain?
if its green it will need to dry and depending on thickness 1 inch pine depending on drying conditions may take from 60 to 200 days to reach around 20% moisture content
the wood will shrink and possibly warp during drying and this means it will need to be milled before gluing
i would defiantly drill before screwing to create a tight joint

Does being left handed make any difference 🤔 I have been unable to cut straight anything 🤨. The Mrs always reckons my DIY is rustic/ Anglo Saxon.
Hi Paul ,well being left handed shouldn't cause a problem go out and choose yourself a cheap comfortable to hold saw and go and practice on some scraps its worth it with a little practice and good markings you will achieve better and better results. Hi Victor lumber is wood sawn from a tree into a plank or beam, rough sawn wood .So I would say yes it’s lumber the boards in the video are salvaged from a building site and haven’t been planed or sanded Thanks for your comment Happy Woodworking David

i find it much easier to make a knifeline and den shave carefully all the way down on the waste side with a chisel. and then saw in that. hope u know what i mean. nice sawing btw :)

+Rustic David yes i use it on both. in hardwood i make the trench on all four sides . that way i find it easier to get it dead square. on softwood i only do the top. btw you should post a video about dovetails. would like to see your take on that.
