    A brief guide with our 4 Step process to take you from discovering your local ice rink, all the way through to setting goals and finding a coach.
    Have you ever wanted to start figure skating as a hobby, but always thought you were already too old to give it a go?
    Lots of people with figure skating dreams have this exact same dilemma. They've always dreamed of getting on the ice and having a go, only to have themselves or someone else talk them out of it. And it is always with the exact same reason......"As much as I'd love to start figure skating, I'm already too old to start. You have to start as a child".
    Well in this lesson we're going to break down each age bracket and share our views and experience for what you can hope to achieve. Then it's up to you to decide whether or not it's too late!
    In this lesson you'll learn:
    - What skaters can hope to achieve when starting at different ages
    - How to use your goals to help determine if "you're too old to skate"
    - How to not let your age hold you back
    Happy Skating!

    Best part of being an adult. The realization you dont have to be good at something to enjoy doing it. I am 40, disabled and never going to get a lot of skills but i love every second im at the rink.

I’ve even competed a few times in solo ice dance. Looking forward to competing in the solo bronze free dance.

    I started five years ago, just before I turned 25, easily one of the best decisions I've ever made! Will I ever be great? Definitely not, but that's not the point. When I step on the ice, I forget everything outside of it, it makes me so so happy, and I honestly don't know how I would've coped the past few years without it.
    People who don't skate don't understand how everything you see figure skaters do on TV is a skill, even if you take away all of the flashy stuff, and just how skilled even the people who comes last at worlds are. Jumps and spins are definitely hard, but steps and turns are so complicated and confusing, and how are you supposed to maneuver on a slippery surface with knives under your feet? When you do get something that you've been struggling with though, it's the best feeling in the world.

    I started skating at 25 it’s been two years, I can do nice sit spins and I am working on having a consistent lutz. I hope one day I can do an Axel and some double jumps. I also love competing as an adult because you do it for the fun of it and there is absolutely no pressure. It’s never too old to start.

    Hi Mitch! I started in 1979 in age of 5, competing until 18 (national level only) 😊 at those times - obligatory figures; instrumental music only; no internet - so very hard to get new information. After 30 years (!!!) I returned back. Had to begin again from the start. However it goes much faster now, lot of information, you can have music whatever you want; excellent choice in the equipment; all kind of tutorials ... sooo much fun. So my group 50+ = super fun. Thank you and Stacey for this super great channel with all great tutorials ❤

    Started at 33 and am 37 now and have all jumps except working on my axel...which I have landed two foot and off ice one foot. I have a butterfly and stars spin entries, get complimented on my camel and lay back, and I sometimes have a sit spin...my backspin is solid off ice and hit or miss on ice. Solid jumps up to Lutz where the edge sometimes flutzes for me. Also got turns and power pulls and the backward outside pivot.

    Great video, yes never too old.
    A little perspective. You are not going to the Olympics. You are not going to land a triple axel. You are not going to be the next World Gold Medalist. You are however going to gain balance, critical skills, valuable confidence, enjoyable exercise, meet people, make friends and have so much fun in the process.

    I really started skating six years ago, I'm 65 , been skating some way from when I was a little girl. I have no coach but material in Internet has helped me a lot, for example the Next Edge and many others. I enjoy every moment on the ice. Spring 2021 I took part in Open Virtual Competition of Bucharest with a 1 min program. Let's have fun on the ice 🙃

    Thanks a lot for making this video❤ I started skating at the year of 31. Now two years in I’m still trying to improve double 3, power pull and double twizzle. When it comes to skating, to me age is not just a number. I have a lot more fears than the teenage/early 20s girls and the progress is much slower than I wanted it to be. But having to struggle with the balance among skating, work and life could make us appreciate any ice time much more than than the kids. The ice is my sacred place and I’m just happy to challenge myself every time and enjoy the feeling of freedom.

    Thank you so much for this vid, takes a lot of pressure off this older but acts 25 year old. I always take so much longer to learn on the ice. Never going to jump, never want to but felt I was being a big baby. Now after this I realise I don’t need to put pressure on myself, I love skating, spinning is getting there slowly, dancing to music. Yes I fall, have had lots of bruises(even with protection) but it’s all worth it for this heading to 60 year old youngster 😉

      I think 25-30, if you never skated before. It’s different when you learned the technique as a child, look at Deana Stellato, she is breaking the rules by being successful competitive skater at 41.

    • @user-kh9ki3kq8m
      @user-kh9ki3kq8m 7 місяців тому +4

      triples are a lot harder but i’ve seen people doing doubles into their 50’s, and not necessarily the most athletic people too, so it’s very possible. past that i would maybe worry about hip injuries from falling tbh, not worth ruining your health for a jump.

    • @amaterasu777
      @amaterasu777 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, that's what I think too. Most adult skaters can learn most of the skating skills that don't involve jumping if they train hard enough.

    My daughter asked me at 3 if I’d take her skating. I do t even know how she knew about it. Funny- I took lessons at her age myself. I didn’t get too far but I can skate. I can swizzle but I’m not super confident and I can’t do anything fancy. My daughter is now a year in with a private coach and in learn to skate school. I decided to join the learn to skate myself this April. Let’s see what happens…. I’m excited even to learn new stuff.

    i would like to know what exactly do you mean by "early teens" and "late teens" cuz i started skating just when i turned 14 and i don't really know where i should put myself. i think it's closer to the second group, so "late teens to early 20s" but i'm still a bit confused

    • @nextedgetutorials
      @nextedgetutorials  7 місяців тому

      This is such a tricky age because it could go either way! It really comes down to how much time you can allocate to figure skating. If you started when you turned 14, but also had a part time job, another sport you were committed to, plus school….then you might be closer to the second group. Hope that helps!

    I'm taking my 3rd ice skating class ever tonight at 6, at the age of 39 :D I've been roller skating my whole life [though not competitively except for one year of roller derby], and I've always wanted to figure skate, but we didn't have a nearby ice rink until I was in high school. I'm realistic and have no Olympic aspirations [although if I turn out to be some type of middle-aged prodigy, of course I wouldn't say no! lol] but my only goal at this point is to just be more graceful on ice, or as graceful on ice that I am on wheels! My *dream* is to be able to someday land a double *anything*. If that happens, I'll feel like I can die knowing I've achieved my dream I had since I was 6. If not, that's ok too because I'm having so much fun! Skating is the closest feeling to flying.

    Unfortunately ageism is definately still a thing - even amongst skaters at the rink. (Not public sessions - I’m referring to private training sessions) I started at 48, now 54. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to deal with it at my rink….from just the “what is she doing” looks down their noses, to the deliberate “get out of my way”…even when I’m in a lesson.

    I’ve been a ballet dancer for a while now and just started skating. My first week I could confidently complete all the skills in basics 1-6, and landed my off ice double axel my second week. Is it too late for me to compete because of my age? Or at this rate of progression do you think I will be ready in a year or so. I don’t expect to be at the Olympic level, not even half the kids my age are.
