Shinji’s Bankai isn’t banned because it’s “too strong” it’s banned because it’s indiscriminate. It doesn’t differentiate friend from foe and affects everyone in its range. Now Kenpachi Kuriyashiki, his Bankai is banned for being too strong.
I guess to put it in perspective, it has a niche and does that extremely well, borderline OP. Against a large group of individuals who are all adversaries, it’s probably the best ability you can use. And the amount of effort to utilize it is pretty much zero. Compared to like Rukia or her brother bankais that are powerful, but require a level of effort and skill to reach similar levels of his bankai in this scenario. Now imagine him using it in a 1v1 or against a strong opponent like Aizen or Yhwach. Him using it against them in its worst case is useless, and best case is just leveling the playing field. It’s doesn’t exactly give him any advantage in this scenario. Last I checked, your allies don’t just let you attack them for free. It’s an ability that thrives in chaos and confusion, so more people just continuously double its effectiveness. To a level where we see in the manga.
The irony of his bankai really fits it’s abilities in a way. Most shinigami use their shikai to fight fodder and bankai to fight heavy hitters, but Shinji’s is the opposite. His bankai is great against fodder and his shikai works best against individuals.
It also makes sense why he didn’t use it against Aizen. Not only would it hurt his allies but it just wouldn’t work on aizen who never really saw his allies as such in the first place.
Didnt Aizen figure out how to deal with it when they fought, and isnt aizens bonkai basically the same thing, but on roids? It's been a while, but aizens bonkai totally takes control of all 6 senses of anyone who witness it if I'm not mistaken.

If he used his ability on a room full of allies then that means everyone would then fight each other meaning that they truly do see each other as allies, but if you did this to a traitor then they should actively try to defend everyone instead of attacking them meaning that they are in fact a traitor/enemy.
I wish Kubo didn't forget the Vizards so damn bad Like, aside from Ichigo, and allies in Hueco Mundo, the Vizards are likely the best asset the Soul Society has agaisnt the Quincies

Against Aizen, it couldn't invert senses, but now it can now invert sound, which is INCREDIBLY crucial because we use our ears to tell how we're rotated and where we are. I'm assuming other things also changed, but that's the most notable one.

Honestly, gamers that have played with inverted controls know how frustrating his ability is because he inverts everything. So if you try and move left, you'll go right. If you try and go up he'll go down. You literally have to try and go down to go up and try to go up to go down and his bunk guy literally is broken as s***
Also important is that your sense of sound is inverted, and, since you use your ears to tell your rotation and stuff, you'd also lose all sense of position, rotation, stability, etc.
The thing is though he can’t use it around captains though because they have to have spiritual pressure lower than his for it to work. Captain stronger than him like Zaraki could counter it.

Captain Yamamoto also had a Bankai that... while not actually banned, yamamoto disallowed himself from using it in any situation where the Gotei 13 wasn't actually wrecked. Mostly because he actually dries out the whole world over time and would eventually leave the whole dry. Basically, just using it devastates the Soul Society and if he is fighting for too long, he is left as the last living person in a dead world.

He isn't the only one nor is he the first. The 7th Kenpachi Kuruyashiki had his Bankai banned because it was big enough to erase the entire Soul Society in one strike and not leave behind a single atom. He was only allowed to use it like every 6 months or so and it had to be away from the Seireitei/Soul Society. He is the only person to have it banned, Shinji's is not banned but restricted because of how it works. This is similar to Yamamoto's Bankai because if he released his Bankai, the flames would also erase the entire Soul Society/Seireitei if he just didn't bother to control it or just let it burn the entire area. You would actually die from the 15+ million degree heat wave before the fire even touches you. The Quincies are only lucky that they have Blut Vene because they would die just from him walking past them. There's also Kyouraku's Bankai that's also restricted because he can't use it next to comrades. They'd die or suffer heavily just for being next to him with his different stages/plays. Only Kenpachi Kuruyashiki has his bankai banned and that's because its literally stronger than Yamamoto's Bankai by erasing everything like a reality warp. "Opens pairs of jaws or a large mouth that appears on the ground below the enemy and eats everything. Anything eaten by this bankai will cease to exist completely". I don't even think you would get sent to Hell after getting hit by it, you just don't exist AT ALL anymore.
More than that. It's reversal of everything. Your front attack is actually an attack from the back, your future injuries is actually a past injury , and vice versa. Everything in reverse.
There are eight bankai that are prohibited in the soul society. Three of which are bankai belonging to the kenpachis, most notable is the seventh as his was a living bankai large enough to eat the soul society. (I got the wrong Kenpachi, I fixed it.)
It's not about his power, and more what his bankai is all about. Ichigo could body Shinji, but Ichigo's bankai translates to "speedy boy with power", Shinji could start a coup.
It's not just up and down, he "flips" or "reverses" your senses. Dunno how it would work for sound or touch. Also he never got to use his Bankai in the manga, iirc, so him getting to use it in the anime is awesome
Little forgotten thing which is bankai increases your overall power by 10x if not mistaken, so leaving ability alone bankai is just a powerboost. I wonder why cpts cant go in bankai state wihout using bankai abilities, kinda like in shikai, they can release a sword and use ability on demand. Remember, releasing shikai also increases your power, like hisagi with findor...
I think it's relative. 10x boost isn't necessarily a strength/speed boost, except in cases like Ichigo's Bankai(which is more like taking that ocean of spiritual pressure and forcing it through a fire hose). Instead, the abilities the Bankai provides is equivalent to 10x the potential of the Shinigami using their Shikai. It's why some captains don't seem that much physically stronger when using their Bankai(ex. Mayuri's Bankai)
Although This Certain Character has shown up in anime The Anime Never got a Season 2 And The Power wasn't Showcased as her Role in Season 1 was a Tutor, commentator of sorts. The LN however showcased it. She's Got Enough Gravity Manipulation Capacity Where she once Tried to Pull Down A Meteor at The Size of Jeju Island And would cause Mass destruction In the process of not Global Destruction, but was But Was Thwarted By her opponent a Time Manipulator and Was Permanently Banned From Dragging Down Meteors, Later she Minimised it By Bringing down Small Meteors and Throwing them like a Ball that she can more or less Latch onto and Travel a shit ton of distance in Minutes, and apparently throws the small meteor back to space
That was the case for Mirajane in Fairy Tail, she was banned from transforming while Girldarts had whole cities rebuilt just so he could walk through them with his powers. But they never did anything with that hype and the banned transformation ended up as just some bullshit.
He only used it in the anime because all of his squad members in the area were already dead. He probably told Hinamori to run as fast as she could to find the remaining squad members and then used it once she was out of the blast radius. And even then he only used it for a split second it seems
For thoes who remember this was actually hinted at way in the soul society arc when unohana and kotetsu confronted soskue after he beat toshiro and isane said she remembers soksue demenstrating his zanpakuto doing this exact thing so he used his zanpakuto to make everyone think his was similar or the same as shinji if i am remembering correctly if not let me know

Not just shinji. One of the previous kenpachi was banned from using his bankai because it killed everything in sight. Friend or foe. And ANOTHER Kenpachi had his bankai active all the time, and could become so powerful that he basically WAS the soul society, so he was imprisoned in the Muken, same as Aizen. Funnily enough he’s also the only person immune to Aizen’s hypnosis.

Kyoraku's bankai is probably banned too, for the same reason, it's an indiscriminate AOE that would kill any ally caught into it.

I just realized Shinji is Aizen's Opposite. Shinji's Bankai reveals the truth where as Aizen's Shikai conceals the truth.

He isn't the only one nor is he the first. The 7th Kenpachi Kuruyashiki had his Bankai banned because it was big enough to erase the entire Soul Society in one strike and not leave behind a single atom. He was only allowed to use it like every 6 months or so and it had to be away from the Seireitei/Soul Society. He is the only person to have it banned, Shinji's is not banned but restricted because of how it works. This is similar to Yamamoto's Bankai because if he released his Bankai, the flames would also erase the entire Soul Society/Seireitei if he just didn't bother to control it or just let it burn the entire area. You would actually die from the 15+ million degree heat wave before the fire even touches you. The Quincies are only lucky that they have Blut Vene because they would die just from him walking past them. There's also Kyouraku's Bankai that's also restricted because he can't use it next to comrades. They'd die or suffer heavily just for being next to him with his different stages/plays. Only Kenpachi Kuruyashiki has his bankai banned and that's because its literally stronger than Yamamoto's Bankai by erasing everything like a reality warp. "Opens pairs of jaws or a large mouth that appears on the ground below the enemy and eats everything. Anything eaten by this bankai will cease to exist completely". I don't even think you would get sent to Hell after getting hit by it, you just don't exist AT ALL anymore.

More than that. It's reversal of everything. Your front attack is actually an attack from the back, your future injuries is actually a past injury , and vice versa. Everything in reverse.
There are eight bankai that are prohibited in the soul society. Three of which are bankai belonging to the kenpachis, most notable is the seventh as his was a living bankai large enough to eat the soul society. (I got the wrong Kenpachi, I fixed it.)

It's not about his power, and more what his bankai is all about. Ichigo could body Shinji, but Ichigo's bankai translates to "speedy boy with power", Shinji could start a coup.
It's so strong it caught Aizen off guard, not an easy thing to do.

You forgot Shunsui's bankai was heavily advised by old man Yama not to use it in the anime because everyone in Shunsui's Bankai is VERY indiscriminate

Little forgotten thing which is bankai increases your overall power by 10x if not mistaken, so leaving ability alone bankai is just a powerboost.
I wonder why cpts cant go in bankai state wihout using bankai abilities, kinda like in shikai, they can release a sword and use ability on demand. Remember, releasing shikai also increases your power, like hisagi with findor...
I think it's relative. 10x boost isn't necessarily a strength/speed boost, except in cases like Ichigo's Bankai(which is more like taking that ocean of spiritual pressure and forcing it through a fire hose). Instead, the abilities the Bankai provides is equivalent to 10x the potential of the Shinigami using their Shikai. It's why some captains don't seem that much physically stronger when using their Bankai(ex. Mayuri's Bankai)

That was the case for Mirajane in Fairy Tail, she was banned from transforming while Girldarts had whole cities rebuilt just so he could walk through them with his powers.
But they never did anything with that hype and the banned transformation ended up as just some bullshit.

For thoes who remember this was actually hinted at way in the soul society arc when unohana and kotetsu confronted soskue after he beat toshiro and isane said she remembers soksue demenstrating his zanpakuto doing this exact thing so he used his zanpakuto to make everyone think his was similar or the same as shinji if i am remembering correctly if not let me know

And ANOTHER Kenpachi had his bankai active all the time, and could become so powerful that he basically WAS the soul society, so he was imprisoned in the Muken, same as Aizen.
Funnily enough he’s also the only person immune to Aizen’s hypnosis.

Sorry it's a good short but Shinji's Bankai is not really banned. There is only one Bankai in the history of the Gotei 13 that was explicitly said to be banned. And it was the 7th Kenpachi's Bankai, because when used it would indiscriminately "eat" everything and everyone one (except 7th Kenpachi) around him
