Breathable and allows rain to enter
The black attracts sun heat and In spring pull it off it’s all prepped for planting!

Lumber wrap is free from our local hardware store...lasts for years. We use it to make burrito rolls of leaves to stash in the corners of the garden for use later as a carbon layer as we fill our compost bins and layer shredded dead headings and prunings with leaves for hot compost piles.

All of my raised beds are planted with fall/winter crops. I will be using low tunnels to keep the crops growing through the coldest part of winter. I am starting to empty out some of my grow pots, and planting garlic and radishes in others. The ones that are going idle for the winter, get covered with leaves, with a handful of fertilizer thrown in on top to speed up the break down. By mid February, they will be ready to plant peas in, in March, beets, turnips, radishes, and carrots.

I was planning on putting down tarps this year because my beds have been completely overrun by weeds, but really didn't know how to go about doing it. I spend WAY too much time dealing with weeds, and then I'm exhausted and don't give the plants the time they deserve. I love the addition of the leaves in the beds to bring worms ~ thanks for sharing this method! I'm totally going to try it!

If you have abundance of leaves, you can do just them. Then in spring, you can scoop the ones, that didn't break down, and keep them for mulching for later.

I'm going to be putting woodchips on top of all the leaves I've gotten from around the neighborhood. If you live in an area with deciduous trees, the winter months are the best time to get your trees trimmed, because they won't be laden with leaves. Keep the woodchips (and logs) or get a Chip Drop.

Using a tarp sounds like a great idea, but I'm certain the local squirrels and outdoor cats would make short work of it. I layered my raised beds with straw instead of leaves this year, so we'll see how well that works.

I'm trying something new this year. I added a layer of compost, a layer of leaves, covered with cardboard, then topped with wood chips to keep the cardboard in place. We have a lot of high wind here, so I have about 3" of so of wood chips to hold that cardboard down (hopefully). I figure I'll either be able to pull off the cardboard in Spring and plant, or it will be starting to decompose and I'll punch holes through it. And moisture will get through the cardboard after a bit. I think it would have been best to water down the cardboard, but our outside water was already turned off because it's below freezing already. I did cut out the areas over my perennial herbs and garlic. But, like I said, it's my first year experimenting, so maybe it won' t work as well as it does in my head. (If you're looking for cardboard, check out a bike store. My local ones absolutely LOVE when I take some boxes off their hands. They're big and thick and usually don't have any colored ink or a ton of old tape that's harder to remove. The local bike shops here are less likely to have recycling dumpsters and have to break down and haul those boxes to the recycling facility, so I save them time and money.)

I’ve put compost then a thick layer of crushed leaves on one of my beds so far and I might add the tarp as I am planning to put a couple of my big planting pots on top of it.
Then I’ll drop one of those mini greenhouses (bought on sale at Aldi: ) over and see how Kale, Swiss chard etc. will do this winter.. ✨🤞😺

I bought a Sun Joe leaf shredder that all but turns the leaves to powder. That said, you can only run it about 5-8 minutes at a time, then you have to let it cool (I rake more leaves into piles while it cools). I burned the first one up, not realizing this. But I've loved it since I learned to baby it. I had bought some cloth bags to cover plants for winter, but they ended up working perfectly with this leaf shredder (it doesn't come with bags, and it needs a bag that breathes).

My thought is to put chopped up leaves on top of my garden beds along with a layer of cardboard on top of the leaves, then do the tarp and leave it for the season. Not something I would recommend, since cardboard is processed with lots of chemicals and also the printed ones usually use toxic ink, especially the more it’s recycled. Also I would make sure not to use a cheap tarp/plastic made with the more “bad types” of plastic, as the older they get, the more they are heated and in the sun, the more they degrade and add micro plastics into your soil.

I have a bunch of trellis boxes that I just lined with pieces of cardboard and I put bubble wrap on top, since I don't have any tarps.
