Volkswagen should be sued for their headliners sagging in every VW models....
They really should be! 😂
@@RatchetWrenches absolutely bro., The VW headliner saggings are a hot mess all over the world now.
it's bout that time VW takes responsibility and repair their sagging liners and door panels for free to no charge to the oners .....
I prefer to spend my money on my children, and not some sagging VW headliners...
Yeah ..
Agree 😂 im glad mine still looks good after 17 years
It's not just Volkswagen. Same problem I had with my older Dodge Dakota. Pulled the headliner out. Instead of replacing the fabric I went with black flex seal after a thorough cleaning of the shell. Turned out fantastic....and no more fabric to worry about sagging.
Got a mk5 in black, headliner is sacking like a old pair of granny tits
I did this exact replacement in my 2006 GTI. It took forever, the issue was mostly the leftover glue and fabric stuck to the board. Not hard but just time consuming. You guys did a great job!
Agreed its very time consuming! But so worth it. Thanks!
Thank you sir, this was exactly what I’ve been looking for. You just saved me from having to stumble around looking for all the clips and Tscrews. Great video, thanks again.
Glad we were able to help you out! Thank you for watching!
Seriously guys, thank you for your video. It helped me A LOT figuring out how to do the job in the right order. My 200 000km gti Mk6 interior looks way better now. I personally used a rotary brush on my drill to get the old fabric off and it worked like a real charm. Other than that, my sunroof gave me a fierce extra challenge. Again, thanks for taking the time to post this video. Have a great day!
Our pleasure!! Glad it helped you spruce up your interior. The rotary brush is definitely a great idea!
Amazing tutorial! Been working on getting a severely used Golf I bought up to spec, and this is a life saver for taking care of that headliner!
Thank you!
My 06 plate gti has just started doing this around the sunglasses case was thinking of taking it to a upholstery shop but watching you do it looks easy Peasy great vid just earned a sun 👍
We appreciate that thank you! Yeah it's really not as hard as you would think just more time consuming then anything. Good luck!
It’s time consuming. And don’t rush the process.
This is probably the best tutorial I’ve seen for replacing the headliner in a golf. I’ve just done my wifes car using this as a guide.
I’d recommend using methylated spirits to remove the final bits of glue, just pour it on and wipe it off. It took me 2 500 ml bottles.
I think the hardest part was getting the screws back in to all those little metal blocks in their little housings along the front window, the ones for the sun visors and the light/sunglasses assembly. That took me flipping ages to get everything lined up so the screws would go in properly. I spent a lot of time upside-down with a torch in my teeth and my feet sticking out the door above the roof. Whoever designed those things needs a career change to design torture chambers or impossible puzzles or something.
Thank you! And hahahah yes totally agree with you on that one!
Great video - did this on a 2008 TDi - I used a heatgun to scrape off the glue but had to go easy to avoid burning the board. Thanks very much for making this - a great help.
Thank you appreciate the comment
Amazing DIY, this helps for sure. I have an '08 MK5 GTI and so far it is still mint in the interior, but I know one day this will come handy as the car ages further. I'm the first owner of the car as well and so far the car has been maintained well. Thanks for this video. This helps a lot.
That's awesome being the first owner and it being in MINT condition! Yes it'll come one day 😂 hopefully not anytime soon though
Best video I've seen doing the job! Thank you for the insight!
Thank you for watching!
That was great and a huge improvement! Thanks 👍🏼
Thank you! Yeah it changed the entire interior
Did you use a wire brush to remove the old glue and foam from the headliner?
You mentioned the mk5 and mk6. I had a mk4 Jetta, 2001 and it did the same thing. It’s Volkswagon, across-the-board. Mine just came down in my 2011 GTI. I’m going to pull mine out and plasti-dip it. I’m not putting another liner back in
Haha true it's basically all of them! And hopefully that's a better solution for you
I'd like to hear the amount of time to do this job. Thank you for the video.
We didn't time it but I think it took approximately 6 hours with filming
Also u explained everything Very good I understand everything
THank you! And we’re glad you were able to follow it!
Keep up the uploads. I hope everything’s going well with you man 👍
Thanks man we def will keep posting, and same to you brotha!
Great video personally wouldn't have gone black with grey interior tho
Thanks and yeah everyone has their personal preferences!
Did you also redo the fabrics on the doors and in the rear? I see it also has staples. I’d really like to see a video on that since that’s my issue right now :(
Definitely saving this for when I get my MK5
It's a must! 😂
Classy fabric choice! I remember seeing the door upholstery swap video you did a couple of years ago and was wondering if you're going to apply the same fabric you just used for the headliner and cover this GTI's doors or any other interior pieces?
Thanks!
Thank you! The fabric is actually really nice and good quality we're glad we went with this one. And yes we'll be applying this same fabric to the door panel areas and same with the rear!
@@RatchetWrenches Yeah, it's going to look nice in there! I'm looking forward to whatever you upload next for the GTI. Cheers!
Awesome Video! been looking for a video like this with clear steps
Thanks glad you enjoyed 👍🏼
This is awesome! Good stuff guys
Appreciate it thanks!
Did you guys have to iron out the fabric to get the creases out? I’ve heard they ship it in 1x1 bag
Nope we didn't have any issues with creases!
What is the size of the fabric that you used? Planning on doing it. Just need to gather all the materials
If you click the link in the description it'll bring you to the exact one we bought and used!
I have the MK6, the interior is mint besides the roof liner that is finally starting to fall off. I cannot drive it with the windows down or it will fall in one piece, lol. Is in my to do list this upcoming winter, eventually...😅
*I hope the new roof is holding up after all these months...
I did this on my 89 GTI but now I would rather just pay to have it done. I might attempt to recover the side panels and would love to see that vid. Go on over to Harbor Freight and get some trim tools. Don't use a screwdriver.
It's a royal pain yeah but the end product is so worth it.
Can one use any fabric?
Great video. Do you know if its safe to drive my car around with all the panels and headliner removed? Im dropping my headliner off at an upholstery shop but i still need my car for work. Just wondering if its safe to drive around with the airbags exposed
It will be safe yeah. More noisy because of no insulation but yes it’ll be safe
@@RatchetWrenches I appreciate the reply.
Do you have a shop in NJ (I noticed the GTI had a NJ plate). If so do you do this work for customers?
Yeah Austin said to reach out to him via Instagram at AMJAutoSupply
Wicked video - really helpful & that is definitely a 2 man job👏👏
Appreciate that! And yes makes it so much easier for sure
Imma watch this later I'm strugging with this
Hopefully this tutorial helps you!
I'm very thankful for this video! You guys rock! My turn 😅
Thank you 🙏🏼
So morning before sun rise is best temp
right after the central lamp in the front middle - there are 4 holders that hold the front attached to the roof - how you managed to get them out?
I just did mine today and unfortunately just broken the plastics :( .. but it took me like 40 min of messing up while looking on how to extract those .... :( Any guidance would be really helpful ... still for future knowledge
Are you referring to the 4 T30 screws that are behind the sun glasses holder and other plastic trim? If so you would just remove those screws but if you're referring to something else I just rewatched that segment and I don't think we filmed up close when actually removing it but if I were to guess it'd either be hooked on or some kind of plastic slide piece so you'd just have to be really careful and wiggle them until they loosen up!
Too much material? More like not enough. The way they start to go suggests that they stretched the material too tight. I watched it first start to pull back at edges, like around my overhead console and rear done light. Then it started pulling out in dips and corners, like the sun visor well. I always figured Volkswagen cheaped out and pulled it too tight to try and maximize material savings. It's so annoying.
Also, the Mk4 generation had its own headliner problems, specifically in the sunroof models. All the moisture intrusion from the sunroof (whether you experienced the dreaded blocked drains or not) caused the fabric to deteriorate prematurely. It didn't seem to happen nearly as often in non-sunroof models though, unlike the Mk5 & 6.
Thanks for the tutorial! Unfortunately it’s above my pay grade. 😅
You're welcome and 😂
Where i can order the material for the roof lining pls
Got it linked in the video description for ya!
hi the previous owner of my mk7 golf had done a really bad paint job on the headliner, it feels really spikey and it just crumbles off. any recommendations on what i could do to?
Probably would have to pull it completely out and redo it like we did in this video
About to start this job on my mk6 gti tonight. I believe i got the same fabric too.
Looks like i should grab a beer or 2 to have while doing it.
Awesome! Hahahah yes I'd highly recommend! The removal of the old adhesive is very tedious but important to get it as clean as you possibly can. Just take your time and make sure you tuck everything and press firmly to make sure that headliner adheres well and you'll be set. Good luck!
@@RatchetWrenches worst part was the cleanup for sure. I broke the screw covers on the pillars but not a big deal. Printed some from ASA.
Clean up of old adhesive was a 2 beer job.
Where are you at in NJ
Hunterdon County
What about the doors , got vids of that?
We do on our previous GTI. Here’s the link.
ua-cam.com/video/I0kDZ7M46nc/v-deo.html
About to do this to my 2008 gti
Awesome! Good luck with it
The same dimensions work on mk6 gti too?
I'm not sure if the dimensions are the same or different
hey bro was the fabric you used kinda stretchy because i got some suede but its not super stretchy so idk if i can get it in all the gaps
I'd say it had minimal stretch and we didn't have issues molding the fabric into all the crevices and gaps!
I tried this myself with zero luck lol, the glue wouldnt adhere cause it was so hot out at the time 😂
It’s def not the easiest job and yeah the glue needs to be applied in a certain temp just like paint 😬😬
Did this project today, took me 12 hours .
It's definitely time consuming! Hopefully it was worth it for you
What are the measurements for the sheet
If you click on the link in the description it'll bring you to the exact fabric we bought!
All the side pillars screw gone downinside
🤷🏽♂️😂
This Procedure Would be the same for my Rabbit Right?
Yeah it’s the same setup, only thing would be different is if you have a sunroof
@@RatchetWrenches Ah ok i don't have a sunroof so this should be an pretty amazing experiment for me and Thanks for the info👍
ugh! this is gonna be an annoying job lol. I've done starlights in a ls400 before which was time consuming but, I feel like this is going to be a lot worse. lol
Its honestly not that bad once you get the headliner out. Just very time consuming if you want it done right
MK5 GTIIIIIIIIIII
Yessir!!
In Greece cost 180€ in a shop 2 days work and done...!!!
