For nearly sixty years my mom has always pressed me on loyalty to family, to the point where careers and relationships were derailed by her. She insisted that I pay a third of my earnings every month for the upkeep of the house, rent and food etc. she told me I used too much electricity and made too many phone calls and ate too much. None of which was true. My sister did all of those things but she threatened to leave the house and mom wanted her to stay so allowances were made for her. When my sister started earning money from a part time job, mom asked her for a third of her earnings too and my sister said no. I was made to feel guilty for wanting a life of my own and to go to university.
Finally she told me that I had nothing to offer anyone, that my ‘family’ were the only ones who loved me and that since I was providing more to the house, I should get two thirds instead of half when mom died. She said she was going to change her will.
She never has. But she still tells me how useless I am, she complains about how I look and why can’t I find a nice girl to settle down with.
And she denied to my face that she ever lifted a hand to my sister or me.
My sister died because she didn’t get a lump checked and twelve years later when she did, it was too late and cancer took her. Now she is immortalised as a flawed but good person.
And I am still useless.
Toxicity exists.
Complex mental health issues and being on the ASD spectrum do not help me. Some families are just bad.
