@Project Diversion He's talking about how people feel inside. Everyone's responsible for their own feelings. There's a worrying trend towards people trying to prevent others going about their lawful business by saying it offends them or hurts their feelings.
@Project Diversion You're absolutely right that you can't legislate for how individuals will feel in a given situation and happily, western governments have tended not to try. I agree that offending others for the sake of it isn't nice but in a free country, we are allowed to say and do things that may offend others. We don't know how this situation developed but I would say there has been overreaction and exaggeration from the staff. The teacher knew this, which is why she wisely decided not to press the issue. The police officer should have realized too but wanted to press his authority to protect his ego. Would I have acted the same way as the photographer? Probably not but I still think the points raised are valid.
@Project Diversion The police could not be sued in the example a). They could theoretically be sued in example b) but there is almost no chance that it would happen as they are virtually never held unaccountable for their actions. Of course we need the police but unfortunately there are multiple issues with the way policing is carried out that are leading to a breakdown in trust with the public. Yes, some people might do "stupid shit" but the police are the professionals and with the right training and temperament should be able to deal with that. For the best explanations of the problem with UK policing I recommend you watch the youtube Crimebodge videos.
@Project Diversion OK, just a couple more quick points. Suing somebody would come under civil law, not criminal and is therefore not a police matter. (Not that the average police officer always knows/cares about the difference between civil and criminal law). My second point is opinion: we have extraordinarily well thought-out laws in this country, based on Magna Carta, that have evolved over centuries and influenced most legal systems across the world. In my experience, the criminal courts do a fantastic job of applying those laws fairly. Policing, however, leaves a lot to be desired (and always has done) but the common use of the video camera has laid it bare for all to see. Sadly, law-abiding citizens need to learn how to protect themselves against abusive policing, which in my experience is the norm, not the exception. Respect to you for presenting your thoughts in a civilized manner.

The Police operate in the UK on the basis of policing in partnership with the community and policing with consent. The guy with the camera was being a dick. He had a massive chip on his shoulder and was immediately confrontational and argumentative. If he had did nothing wrong then that would have been established by the Officer. As a retired police officer I despair of the PC attitudes of the PC's (little pun). It all started going downhill when the regional training centres were closed and training for new recruits was carried out in house and drastically shortened. My son in law who is with the North Wales police tells me they have more modules on equality and diversity than actual law during basic training. Common sense has ceased to exist. My old force Merseyside, are now charging photographers outside police stations with Sec 50 of the Police Reform Act, this is called the policeman's (sorry police person's) friend because it was vaguely worded deliberately to be a catch all. They tried Sec 5 of the Public Order Act however as NEWSFLARE point out a police officer cannot ordinarily be alarmed distressed or harassed by swearing as long as there are no members of the public within earshot. The MET tried appealing a dismissed Sec 5 charge all the way up to the Court of Appeal. They were laughed out of court and it cost them (us) millions. This macho posing by constable angry was purely to impress the headmistress and parents. The reality is he was incredibly BUTTHURT.
You lot who start with "I'm a retired police officer and the police today are shit" are a disgrace. You have no idea how much policing has changed, no idea of the shot social media has caused police. No idea at all. Keep your opinion to yourself instead of shit-stirring.
John I can well believe that. I passed the selection process for Cheshire Police but noticed that most of the process was trying to find out if I was a racist. My friend had a similar experience with Northamptonshire Police. I decided this is bullshit and not for me so I decided to pursue a different career.
@@adz124ps Believe me I do know how policing has changed and it has changed for the worse. One son in law is currently with North Wales police, my other daughter is a security analyst with the Home Office and her ex is with the NCA. My brother and his wife have just retired from the Home Office so I'm pretty much up to date with policing trends. Oh and amongst my drinking companions are a retired special branch DI, a semi retired spook and a number of serving police officers. Instead of your closed ranks siege mentality take a good look at yourself. There is a disconnect with the police partly due to the fact the only time you see a police officer is when there is a conflict situation. The other big factor is the almost universal condescension and lack of respect from the younger officers. I have the right to voice an opinion your attempt at stifling free speech is just another indication of political correctness.

John I can well believe that. I passed the selection process for Cheshire Police but noticed that most of the process was trying to find out if I was a racist. My friend had a similar experience with Northamptonshire Police. I decided this is bullshit and not for me so I decided to pursue a different career.
