Moog sells cam bolts that have grease zerks so you can service the LCA bushings, I couldn’t tell how well they work but i will be changing out my lower control arms soon and he kit i got from freedom has all the hardware but just mite buy into the Moog serviceable cam bolts
I recently went through this. Tried to get an alignment and mine were all seized ('21 4Runner). Had to replace the LCAs and all cam bolts. It was a nightmare sourcing the rear cam bolts as there's a national shortage and they're backordered many months from Toyota. I managed to track them down though. Anyway... Toyota needs to wake the hell up and find a better way to align their vehicles. These bolts have been rusting and seizing and failing for decades and Toyota doesn't care. At least provide stainless bolts/eccentric cam washers to help stave off rust. Or find a better design for setting camber, caster, etc. I'm actually on the fence with buying a new Toyota going forward. My 4Runner has rusted so badly and I live in California. Not just the frame and LCAs, but the paint is awful and there's a ton of surface rust on painted panels on mine too.
I have a 12 year old GX460 that has been in MN all its life. I just did an alignment last week and they had to torch it to get the camber in spec.
For replacing my LCAs on my GX I researched this a lot. I love Total Chaos’ Expedition series but dirt getting in uniballs and heims would be too much of a problem. I wasn’t willing to go RCLT on my secondary rig, so I went with Dirt King’s Performance series which has grease-able and replaceable ball joints and bushings, pretty future proof as I can now just swap out as needed. I’m just not looking for the maintenance race parts from Camburg or Total Chaos require.
I used Aerokroil to unfreeze rear cam bolts on a 10 year old RAV4. It took a couple of days to soak them loose.
2 questions...were those used LCAs that you bought or new. Also, how did you know that they had gone bad? Just need an idea because my 5th gen has 100k now.
The Dorman were brand new in September…the OEM are also brand new. The really beat up were my old ones. They squeaked like crazy which is either bad or non greased or cheap bushings typically. Likely mine were softer, cheap, and non greased so just not worth it
Any comments on the superpro offset bushings?
i need to cut the lowers off of my 15 rrunner.. did you make a video for that?? was it really that bad?? I just bought my sawzall and steel cutting blade haha what did ya use
Hmm…yeah I think this was the video I did that but it’s a hard angle to film. I decided my arms were toast so I was ok cutting a lot. I cut the arms at the bushings clean of the vehicle to give me space to work. The sawzall wasted so many blades and worked horrible for me…maybe I had cheap metal blades but the cam bolts are built different than most metal. I just clearance everything I could to cut them out with an angle grinder cut off wheel. That worked for me…it’s horrible to do no matter how you approach it
Did you do this job yet? I need to do mine, I bought the super pro arms and have had them for going on a year now, LOL, but my lower ball joints are still tight so I've been putting off this job. I'm starting to get a clunk which I think maybe one of the bushings, so I need to do it soon. Just looking for some encouragement LOL.
Not a job that I ever want to do but this video will help get it done when it happens. Thanks
What was your symptoms?
I'm in MN too. Wondering who you use for your alignments ? I'll be doing this soon, so thanks for the video overview
I've got a grandfathered in lifetime alignment at Firestone. They still will do them for me.
Great video! So did you anti-seize the cam bold and sleeve or just the sleeve? I was told not to grease the bolt as it has potential to slip out of alignment during hard off-roading and just lube the sleeve so it wont seize to the bushing. sorry for the run-on sentence lol
Hmm…not really sure I have ever seen that. The bolts are real tight. The worry I would guess is they come loose. The washers are what keep it in alignment typically and offroading will bend over the tabs. Shifting besides that, not sure…I feel like anti-seize really shouldn’t add play…
My 08 i had the right side rear bolt seized lol im ordering cam bolts so i can go ahead and cut them off, have new arms already
Funny, today I literally was searching for LCA for my 5th Gen also. Lucky this popped up.
Haha right on
Oem all day buy once cry once. You only replace them every 100k so
Does anyone know the difference between the 4Runner lower control arms and the Tacoma lower control arms?
Thanks.
