Hi Chael, my 2 cents:
Ideally, a backup fighter should not get spotlight until the fight is already taking place - we could do it in the way it is done right now and I'd be fine, too. My logic is you shouldn't let the dummy in that position to think that he has some leverage over IF the "main" fight happens. Imagine Masvidal being the backup for Leon vs Kamaru and giving his '3-piece with a soda' to any of the fighters right after weight-ins.
I'd imagine Kumshat Chimaev doing sick stuff for attention if he was let thinking he can get a better fight if he deals with one of them before the competition.
That's why I'd never give the backup fighter any credit except for show-up&make weight, and I'd be vocal if he signed the papers and didn't do one of these two things, too.

The problem is last time those three signed to fight the back up didn’t fight either he fought someone he wasn’t even ready for or thinking about. The UFC pretty clearly said Stipe was good it would be disrespectful even tho that was the backup since the fight was made. So Tom got the chance of a lifetime when all the UFC had to do was say Stipe vs the backup for the interim Belt. Isn’t this basically the same thing except Tom is already the Interim champion.
Jones seems done with fighting... he chooses Miocic as his retirement fight because you know why? When he defends his Heavyweight belt against the "GOAT" of the heavyweight division, he can say that he was the GOAT in both divisions and retire strong. Aspinal unfortunately will inherit a shit division, there is no one left for him to fight. I'm so upset the state of the heavyweight division for the next 3-4 years, but I understand why Jones is doing it like this, he is looking after himself and no need to put his legacy on the line against arguably the best heavyweight we have ever seen and that's aspinal.

What I’m hoping for is that this “ducking Tom” situation is all an act, he makes us believe he’s going to retire even early into his inevitable post-fight win speech over Stipe, only to call out Tom for his real final fight.
That would be absolutely legendary.
If Jon goes out there and steamrolls Stipe like he did Gane, he might change his mind and give the fans what they want, who knows. But I'm sure there's also a part of him that would love nothing more than to stick it to the people who continually pester him about fighting Tom by retiring.

I think Jon is playing it very smart. He knows he's at the end of his career, his performance now would not compare to his prime self, probably will sit back and see if other fighters can find holes in his game that Jon can take advantage of when he decides to fight him. Not to mention its a brilliant marketing tactic. He's swinging the carrot around.

I never thought I’d say this, but I don’t care anymore. I don’t even care to see jones back in action. My favorite fighter of all time but I’ve always been and always will be agains guys who should retire, coming back and fighting and personally I’m done with jones. It’s just been so long, I feel like once it’s been too long, unless you’re young in the career, chalk it.

This is why the UFC won't even entertain the idea of the more logical, meaningful fight the fans want which is Aspinall/Jones... They have always known full well that Jones is dipping after fighting Stipe, who at this point just might need a mobility scooter to get to the octagon. It's a lame way to end a career, but probably smart. Jones is well advised to avoid Tom at this stage in his career.

I agree with what you said, but from the perspective of respecting the heart of a champion. So my opinion is slightly different.....I think a loss for his final fight doesn't help his legacy. It only means he doesn't go out on top.
Where I disagree is which fighter he loses to causing the most damage to his legacy. I think losing to Stipe......the man who beat all of the best heavyweights in championship fights and has the longest heavyweight title streak with 3 defenses, should be expected. He beat the most recent heavyweight champions. Stipe lives a healthy and clean life. He isn't aging like Jones who did the opposite.
Losing to Tom would be a huge deal because Tom has never even fought a former or current heavyweight champion. I'm not saying he couldn't beat them. I'm just saying he hasn't been tested on that stage yet. I personally think he will rise to the occasion. With heavyweights, the conversation changes quit all the time.
