Refilling AdBlue / DEF on a BMW Diesel - How Hard Can it Be?

  • After 27 months of ownership we got our first AdBlue (or DEF - Diesel Exhaust Fluid as its called in the US) refill message on our F46 BMW 220d Gran Tourer.
The owners handbook suggests that you lock the refill bottle in place and it auto fills, however if you buy a 10 litre can from a petrol station or Auto parts shop, it just has a filler tube.
Overall its a pretty simple job as you will see.

Very helpful. I re-filled the ad-blue on my 5 series today, no bother. I even managed to avoid the dripping hose by putting some plumbers tape around the thread before connecting it to the canister - worked a treat and dry as a bone, with no waste.

Refilling directly from a 10L bottle is an exercise in frustration. Do the following instead:
    1. Buy a 2L bottle of Coke. Drink it, rinse it, and rinse it again with distilled water. Minerals can cause expensive damage to your SCR system.
    2. Buy a Lisle offset funnel, item 17232. You need this specific funnel.
    3. Fill the 2L bottle with AdBlue from a seated position using the funnel, periodically allowing it to breathe. Put the AdBlue bottle on your knee and the Coke bottle between your feet.
    4. Put the funnel in the car's AdBlue filler port and slowly pour the 2L down its gullet. Rotate the funnel as necessary to maintain a slow, steady flow rate. Refill the 2L as necessary until your tanks are full.
    5. Rinse the funnel and store it in a bag to prevent dust. Do NOT rinse the 2L. Instead, cap it, label it, and save it for next time.

An advice from my friends from BMW is to use AdBlue BMW original only, it has an additive to protect the Adblue injection pump!

It has been proven that this is not correct. BMW Adblue is not made by BMW but simply a rebranded one from a known brand to ISO standards.
Even BMW say you can use any brand as long as it is to the correct ISO standard.

@@simioncsm5042 in my car’s owners manual it says I can use any Adblue to ISO 22241. I’m afraid I have no idea who makes it.
As an example though I recently bought a complete set of OEM shocks and springs for my Alpina from Autodoc using the correct BMW part numbers.
The shocks even came in BMW GROUP boxes. The parts are actually Sachs and Eibach.
I paid £406 for 4x shocks and springs, the same parts that BMW whitish charge over £1000 for.

Be wary of using adblue stored outside in clear cans, it goes off. Been using adblue from halfords, its in light blocking plastic bags, way to go. Handy spout and alot less rubish.

The rest you have left in the bottle mix it 1 - 10 water and pour it on the plants to make them grow and throw the filler neck away so you dont use it again to avoid getting crystallized adblue in the tank next time you fill

@@ridehead8771 I can see where you are coming from. Luckily we’ve only needed 10L in 16,000 miles and there’s still 5000+ range left.
Having said that, having had petrol and diesel versions of this 220d I still feel we are saving having a diesel, even with the 18p /litre extra for diesel.
The fuel price is about 12% higher but we are getting 45% more mpg around town and 25% more on a long run over our old (less powerful) petrol.
Having said that, for general running about I use our 2006 Jetta TDi.
EDIT: When we got the 220d the main reason for going to diesel was that I wanted XDrive for towing as the FWD models struggled to put power down with a 1400kg trailer on the back.
