PowrMatic / Innova 2.0 AirCon DIY Installation

  • I've been looking for an aircon / heat pump solution for our bedroom. This Innova unit seems to fit the bill, given that there's no room for the external unit of a 'split'system. It is a bi-directional heat pump in inverter motor control - so efficient and quiet. (3.1kW, 3.5 CoP).

    The installation was complicated by local circumstances but is essentially very straight forward and doesn't require a qualified engineer.

    Hi! I'm wondering how is it during winter time? Does the heat working well? And if you not turning it on during winter, does the cold air from outside come in through that drill holes?

      Hi. The unit works fine in the winter, here in the UK at least, where the outdoor temperature is rarely more that a few degrees C below freezing. It does heat the room and maintain the set temperature. The air circuit in and out of the external vents is isolated from the indoor side. So there are no cold draughts from outside, even when the unit is off.

      @@Greeves Do you have any tips for when the winter comes? We’re in Vancouver, the winter is not so bad but could be freezing in some months. Any special care we should do for the machine? We also have main central heating in the house too. So we might not turn this one on everyday during winter.

      @@chaaimjaja Your situation sounds like mine. We have conventional gas central heating and only use the Innova to top-up; when we're in the room for a while & there seems no point in keeping the whole house warm, for example. I mainly installed it for cooling in the summer. During the winter though, I believe the unit periodically pauses heating the room while it de-frosts the evaporator (and water exits the unit via the drain tube). It certainly does this in the summer, though I can't say that I've definitely seen it happen in winter. De-frosting only happens occasionally & takes a minute or so, so isn't an issue in terms of overall performance. If you have temperatures below freezing for an extended time, it's possible that the drain tube could freeze up and become blocked. I'd think that you could break this out of the rubber tube by hand; or use a kettle of hot water. It's never happened to me but according to the manual - If the drain does become blocked the unit will stop working and display an "OF" overflow error.

    Thinking of doing something similar for our flat as we've got no room for outdoor units. How's the noise level? Have you tried the heating function yet?

    • @Greeves
      @Greeves  Рік тому +1

      We're pleased with it - especially during the recent hot weather. It is compact & the noise level is OK. It's easy to watch TV at normal volume without issues, for example. It does have a 'night mode' which we haven't felt the need to use; this mode is specifically intended to quieten the unit. It reduces the fan speed and hence the noise noticably. I've tested the heating for a short while just to see if it gets warm - it does. It won't be until winter that I get a real feel for how well it performs though. It'll be interesting to find out how it handles very low outdoor temperatures but have no experience to report on yet. All the best.

      @misslilc00kie Рік тому +1

      Good to know it’s got a quiet mode if needed, but not too bad if you can hear the tv over it at average volume. Sounds like it’d work for average use in our space. Thank you for all the info!

      We've been through hot & cold seasons now and the unit works well. It is noisier (in the room) than a split system though & I wonder about how to fix it if / when it evenutally goes wrong. I'd definitely go for a split system in preference (like the Panasonic ua-cam.com/video/IQzzvUIRVcw/v-deo.htmlsi=4yizzh4qr_EFVZiO ). When space is limited outside though, the PowwrMatic is next best thing.

      @@Greeves I'm doing a new build holiday let which will be all electric. Having a devil of a job getting anyone to give me a split system quote so the DIY route is becoming an attractive option. Otherwise I can see it holding up my first fix.

      @@russellhutson1603 In that case it would be fine. Simple to fit & easy to operate. The automatic mode is great for maintaining a comfortable temperature - summer, or winter 👍

      It is as noisy as a typical aircon unit but mine has a very annoying rattle when it starts up (which I have not tried to fix, TBH). After 3 months, I don't notice it any more.

    • @Greeves
      @Greeves  3 місяці тому +2

      @@martinwinlow Yes, ours started to rattle too. It was the metal cover for the air intake & filter on the top of the unit. Wedging this with a small scrap of foam has cured it.🙂

    Costs, please?
    Are you using this for heating or cooling principally? Your video title suggests the latter... My interest is 100% heating (as it would be based as I am n the Hebrides!)... Any reviews on the heating side?

    • @Greeves
      @Greeves  10 місяців тому

      Hi. I bought the unit directly from cooleasy.co.uk for £2.1k inc VAT. Obviously, I fitted it myself, so minimal additional cost. We got it primarily for cooling. Now that the weather’s getting colder we’ve used it a few times for heating though and it certainly works. I’m looking forward to seeing how it does over the coming winter, especially when it’s below zero outside. So I’ve little experience of heating so far. We have central heating too, so only expect to use the heat pump as a top-up when we’re in that room (& can turn down the central heating). So doesn’t sound like your use case. We are pleased with the unit though. It automatically maintains the set temperature, winding itself up & down, making occasional gurgling noises, as required.

      Thanks. I ordered one (12HP) last week from Amazon (£1400 +£200 delivery) so i’m wondering now what yours does that mine doesn’t! I’ll be v disappointed if it really doesn’t work for heating below 5C…

    • @Greeves
      @Greeves  10 місяців тому

      @martinwinlow Good luck with it, I hope it works out OK. By the way, we have a Panasonic mini-split system in a room downstairs. I bought that on eBay for a similar price to yours. It’s really good & quieter than the single unit upstairs. There was no room for an outdoor unit up there though, otherwise I’d have gone for the Panasonic again. The Panasonic has gone through a winter & worked well. It freezes up occasionally but automatically reverses to quickly clear the ice before starting to heat again. I did a video on the installation ua-cam.com/video/IQzzvUIRVcw/v-deo.htmlsi=aa6OP79SuAm22NCc

      @@Greeves Amazon have just emailed me to say there's an issue with postage and have cancelled the order and refunded me. When I asked if I can get it delivered elsewhere (assuming it was my island location that was the problem) they said yes just re-order it. Price has gone from £1400 +£200P&P to £2359 + £125P&P! Needless to say I won't be doing that and I have queried all this and await Amazon's response.
