Does this mean that I don't have to be licensed to get my NMLS ID number?

correct, you can apply for one and get it but if you do not register, meaning work as an MLO for a bank or license, meaning work for a broker or lender you will eventually give up that ID. Also, just because you have an ID does not give you the authority to originate loans. Any other questions, feel free to call our office at 317 566 0425 and we can assist.
