@@lillysparrowthis often happens when people have sweetened soft drinks normalized to them, especially at a young age. It ruins your palette. It's correctable within weeks, though, by just cutting those drinks out and drinking nothing but water. It is well worth it, as it is unhealthy to not crave water when thirsty. It is a pretty easy problem to fix if you have any self discipline.

If you're not replacing the water you should be drinking with soft drinks, and you won't drink water, then you're likely dehydrated all the time. Talk to your parents about this, kid. It's very normal but also very unhealthy and very easy to resolve.

If scent-based taste exists, then just buy peppermint, orange and lemon essential oils (100% pure concentrated natural oil) and rub a drop on your water bottle. Boom, scent-based taste.

Olfactory-sensory input is a pretty big part of taste as a whole too

What people aren’t considering is: dental health. If you use Cirkul or Mio, you are adding something to your water. Those flavors, even though they do not have sugar, are made from citric acid, and other acids, in addition to other additives, that lower the pH of the water you are drinking. Sipping on these all day is destructive to your tooth enamel. And once you lose it, you don’t get it back. At least Air Up adds flavor without adding anything that alters the chemistry of the water, which preserves your tooth enamel.

Thats a really great point! I hadent really considered that but it makes perfect sense. from a chemical standpoint, 'natural' scents just means you are acquiring the ester that gives orange or vanilla its trademark scent from a natural source rather than synthesizing it from benzoyl peroxide or whatever, but concentrating this chemical into a pod may not necessarily make it smell natural to the user lol

The way I immediately knew the AirUp was BS was because anyone who's ever had a stuffy nose understands that, yes, smell is a big part of taste, but smell does not ENTIRELY DICTATE taste. When you lose your sense of smell you can still taste some things, just not certain complexities of the flavors.
AirUp is the opposite of that; it's trying to add flavor complexities to a base that doesn't have the "supporting" flavor elements to actually make the scent "flavor" mean anything. AirUp claiming that scent alone can completely change the taste of flavorless foodstuffs to taste like XYZ scent is the same as if an artist claimed a stickman with good shading counts as realism.

    • @gutwrenchingdeaths
      @gutwrenchingdeaths Місяць тому +23

What you are saying is not wrong but not entirely true. In the current scientific consensus, most "flavours" are scent based; we have only 5 taste receptors (sweet, salty, spicy, savoury, sour) and everything else is smell and sometimes texture. The way we "smell" food when we eat it is two-fold, so you are right when you say a stuffy nose doesn't completely block flavour, because it doesn't; it blocks smells from entering your nose, but it doesn't block smells from coming in through your mouth and travelling up your airway into your scent receptors. So I don't think it's accurate to say smells just add "certain complexities of the flavour" when basically all characteristic flavours (e.g vanilla, spices, fruit and meat "tastes", etc) come from scent. It's also weird to say that "scent can't change the taste of flavourless stuff", because yeah scent can't change taste, but if it has scent it's not "flavourless". I agree with your conclusion though, that only smelling something through your nose would provide an "incomplete" flavour experience.

As a chemist, just about everything you put in your mouth is a chemical, and just about all foods have volatiles that create scent. There's really nothing that should concern you on that front.
As far as the divorce between flavor and scent, I want you to imagine the gap and difference between how an alfredo spaghetti smells, and how it tastes. They're really very different experiences. I think they're both valuable in different ways.

Listen, it is not worth 50 dollars. I learned that the hard way. Once you have it, it’s a cool novelty until you run out of pods and realize it’s nowhere near important enough to keep chucking money into. It’s literally a subscription service, just not traditionally. The pods last not nearly long enough (maybe 2 weeks). If you’re dead set on getting one, go for the orange creamsicle flavor, it’s the best of the ones I tried and doesn’t really have the chemical taste of the others

I'll admit to being a little confused by the concern about scent compounds entering orally vs nasally. I totally see what you mean about it being deceptive, but your nasal passages are connected to your mouth, and also full of mucous membranes, so even if the scent compounds were some kind of hazard, they'd be just as dangerous in your nose as in your mouth. Think about how we use nasal sprays for some medications that we want to take effect very rapidly (narcan, some migraine meds, etc), because they can be absorbed much more quickly and completely that way than if taken orally.

I was never actually considering buying it since the cap mechanism isn’t possible with my disabilities and I don’t have any help, but its something I keep wondering about. @@CozyDesignStudiosIt’s the dexterity needed to put this thing together and take it apart again! Drinking out of it, it would actually be better for me than a traditional water bottle of glass, which I can’t use at all without a straw. But the assembly is a huge limitation.
I’m an incomplete quad, the reason I drink lol, with one arm thats not functional at all and one hand that’s semi functional but the arm itself isn’t great either. I can manage to do enough things with my good hand but only _if_ they can be done in my own way (there’s not one specific way you have to put on pants for instance.)
-The need for two hands to attach the straw
-The need for coordination and a good grip to pull up the fragrance disk to activate/remove it
      -Pieces that require hand-washing
-The shape, size, and packaging of these pieces alone would be hopeless trying to hold them with my amount of tremor, grip weakness, and limited number of fingers I can move on my good hand
Those are the main problems I saw with the design in the ads I’ve seen.
If you ever want to test how accessible a product is (mobility wise only), try to use it:
      a) with very oily hands
      b) with only one hand, from opening the packaging all the way to washing it after use
      c) with different sets of fingers tied together on one or both hands
      d) with only one hand that’s _also_ oiled, and/or
      e) with your elbows never leaving your sides, as if they were stuck there with glue.
There are infinite disabling conditions out there and that doesn’t nearly cover a fraction of them but it does semi-simulate some common conditions like arthritis, paralysis, grip weakening conditions, and coordination disorders well enough to know if the product has a chance. If an abled person cant easily use it intentionally hobbling themselves the hopes for a disabled person is slim!

They probably aren't lying about the flavorings being natural, in fact they probably did extract the flavors from their natural source, which is an absurd waste of resources compared to just artificially producing them. The reason it tastes “artificial” is because of the solvant they used, they can't just put the flavor compound on its own in a capsule because it'd just be a powder that wouldn't get into the air so you wouldn't be able to smell it. So in order to let you smell it they have to disolve the compound in some sort of solvant that will slowly evaporate into the air and take some of the flavoring with it, and then they just soak something in this solution and put it in the capsule. You're probably smelling/tasting this solvant, and the reason you and Hipyo reacted so differently to it is because humans can have wildly different sensitivies to these solvants, in fact Hipyo might be slightly allergic. I don't know what solvant they're using but ethanol and benzaldehyde are both commonly used in perfumes IIRC. Also the solvant helps prevent rotting by being something bacteria can't live in.
Artificial flavors can absolutely be so good that you can't tell the difference, the reason the early examples failed was because they only had a single compound when usually the taste of any one thing is a combination of many compounds. However people also ended up liking the early artificial flavors so they stuck around. The really tricky thing isn't flavor so much as texture, turns out the experience of eating is so multifaceted that it is really difficult to replicate.

I think it’s a decent product for a very specific group of people. Both my dad and brother have air ups. My dad has had a huge soda addiction for as long as I can remember and multiple times would quit cold Turkey but then end up like drinking insane amounts of orange juice or something like that. The one that’s been happening for the last few years is seltzer. Which also got my brother to drink an insane amount of it. Like I’m talking in a four person family where I never drink seltzer and my mom will maybe have one a day we were going through four cases a week. So air up has hugely cut that down (we go through about one and a half cases a week now, still not great but more manageable for sure). They’re not huge fans of the air up (both the bottle and the flavor) but it does enough to offset their dumb cravings for essence of lime or whatever the hell those seltzer flavors are that it’s helpful to have around.

Also yeah a lot of products that can really help people with specific niches tend to suffer being pushed to everyone. i’m an air up user so i appreciate you taking a fairly neutral/objective stance on it. i definitely agree about the price point and issues with the water bottle. the plastic one (which i have) is honestly not super durable unfortunately. i’ve had it for almost 6 months and a piece in the inside of the lid broke off. but i honestly still support it because it’s the first thing that’s gotten me to regularly drink water in my entire life. i’ve never been good at drinking water, i don’t really get thirsty very often so sometimes i’ll just forget to drink for an entire day. i’ve tried adding flavors but i always found them too strong and ultimately nothing really stuck in my routine. if anyone has similar experiences to me and can afford it, i would honestly recommend the product. the lemon flavors are my favorite because they’re pretty subtle and natural imo, and i can still “taste” the flavor even after the whatever amount of liters the package says. if you buy one, all i’d suggest is that you get a stainless steel. i got the stainless steel for my dad and his seems like it’s holding up better than my plastic one.

That bubbling effect sounds awful. I have a really high epiglottis and having too much air in my mouth when I swallow always makes me cough and splutter to an ambarrassing degree. It also sounds impossible to chug from even without the scent pod "engaged" and if I can't drink a whole 500mL in ten seconds after a gym sesh what's the point???
Anyway good video, here's a comment to drive engagement.

I'm honestly pretty happy about this review the one from hipyo was imo just disingenuous and more of a slander as they didn't understand 90% of the bottle.
I still think the bend design makes sense because basically ever straw bottle I know has the straw pointing slightly sideways instead of straight up also this way you don't have to tilt it that much while drinking.
about the watertightness I still don't understand the point in saying the bottle isnt water tight when it's open. like basically every bottle will leak once you unscrew the thing that keeps the water inside. from a plastic bottle to isolation cups every bottle will leak once you can drink out of it and once you close it it's watertight which the air up is.
I thought about what flavors would taste good and my instincts knew that a bunch of flavors wouldn't be that good but those who are pretty easy to make like lime or coca are honestly pretty tasty. I didn't get watermelon because I knew it would be awful and even vanilla swirl isn't that good but peach and the before mentioned two are imo worth it.
the price is high but you get a new technology that no one else has. its both the brand name and what they offer which you pay so I can understand the price. it's like a luxury thing like apple or Rolex. you pay for something not worth the price in production cost but you also get something which no one else has.
I got myself a bottle before Christmas and 2 month later I got the gen 2 (1 liter) because I wanna drink water and not just refill it every hour. I think the flavors are fine when you get the right flavors. since I got the first bottle I used like less than 10 pods in about 4 month and I use this as my main bottle which I use every day also, you can get more than 5 liters out of it and still have a taste which is less noticable but still there. it's like having a bit of water in a empty soda bottle, you still get some taste but it's less than the soda.

Honestly, while the air up is weird and fun, the best thing I’ve seen in a reusable water bottle (my current water bottle) is a small plastic grate that snaps into the opening so you can put stuff like fruit or ice in your water and don’t get a mouthful of it or clog the mouth piece. It’s simple but makes a difference.

The problem of these bottles is they suggest you need to drink more water than you actually need. You don't need 2l water a day. You need about 2l of liquid a day, a lot of which you already get through the solid food you eat throughout the day. Add a coffee or thee or 2, and suddenly you only really need a few glasses more.

Personally I enjoy my Air Up but I certainly understand and see most of the criticisms. The flavor is NOT substantial, it’s subtle, but for me it’s enough to add a little interest to my water. The pods are really hit or miss, but what’s weird is some of the pods really do get better after sitting out for a bit. I recently ordered the strawberry lemongrass, and mango passion fruit pods and on initial taste it was… bitter and almost plasticy? So I took them off and came back to them the next day and they honestly tasted extremely pleasant and that weird bitter taste was totally gone. Those and the mixed berry were so far the nicest ones that I actually actively enjoy using. Also I don’t think the “water tightness” is much of an issue because as long as you screw the top on it’ll be fine. I don’t find it revolutionary, but I definitely enjoy using it and honestly kind of like the look and feel of it all.

Bought AirUp because I wanted to drink more water myself. Currently, I drink a lot of sweet tea mainly, and I have bad experiences with flavoring packets (seeing floating blue-colored particles in my pink strawberry mix freaked me out even if they were harmless.) I used Mio as a kid, but like KoolAid, never really liked it as much as something like sweet tea. After seeing so many people promote AirUp, I gave it a try.
It's definitely not for people used to heavily flavored, sugary drinks. It didn't taste like anything... good. It felt like drinking poor quality water, if you know what I mean. That hollow, empty sip that coats your mouth and makes your stomach hurt a little because it feels like you drank something wrong. That was the experience I got from the Peach Iced Tea flavor pod. I tried a couple others, but none of them tasted good at all, if they tasted like anything.
Believe me, I tried to force myself to like it, I tried to lie to myself and say it tasted good, it was just mild, but it simply wasn't true. I ended up trashing the pods and giving the bottle to my sister. I also didn't like how the water got bubbly like the bottle was unsealed when the pod was up; it felt aggravating to drink.

I think if the scents were better then it would be more appealing. It would be nice to have them sold in stores with scent testers like perfume. I'm not skeptical of the functionality - it's been known for a long time that our interpretation of flavor is greatly impacted by scent. I'm just not surprised they failed to execute the concept in an appealing way.

However, a friend of mine does swear by the fact that there is actual strong flavour and that it doesnt taste like drinking water. Could also just be that it works for some and not for others, and i happen to be one of the ones it doesnt work for.

    • @CozyDesignStudios
      @CozyDesignStudios  Місяць тому

I'm fairly certain it's not because when you suck, it creates negative pressure in the bottle so any holes (like the one in the top that the scent enters through) are going to be letting air in and not water out.
So if what your asking is if water comes out and enters the pod and then back into the stream, then no definitely not.

    • @CozyDesignStudios
      @CozyDesignStudios  Місяць тому +1

Yea I mean ive seen other people talk about how other brands bottles also leak if knocked over, it seems there is a certain audience that doesnt really worry about the leak potential?
Though these appear to be super popular with the kids so i feel like a leaky bottle is maybe not the best for THAT audience? haha
Idk I think there is an audience for every product no matter how useless or dumb it may seem to other people if it solves the problems those people have they may well be willing to deal with the unavoidable flaws that product might have.
No product is perfect and, as I alluded to in the video there are definitely ways to allow air in and not water out. I think they likely just got very stuck on the idea of having a press fit silicone top and then tried to design around that to make it work rather than take a more wholistic approach which would have lead them to see that leaking may be a problem and maybe they should figure out a valve of some kind.
Its always hard to kill your darlings and in product design there is alot of physical work that goes into doing that so its even harder and sometimes the budget doesnt allow it so its understandable.

I will say: taste and smell are completely different, from a biochemical standpoint. You have EXACTLY 5 things that you can taste, and EVERYTHING ELSE is considered smell. Calling this "scent-based taste" is really mixing the lay and technical understandings in a very unhelpful, intentionally "cloudy" way.
For the record, you can taste the following things:
    1. You can taste the presence of ions, especially metal ions. This is referred to as "salt", and is why sodium chloride is "salty".
    2. You can taste the presence of acids - that is, the presence of electron-donating molecules. This is referred to as "sour", and is why lemon juice is "sour".
    3. You can taste the presence of bases - that is, the presence of electron-accepting molecules. This is referred to as "bitter", and is why cocoa is "bitter".
    4. You can taste the presence of sugars, especially simple sugars like glucose and sucrose. This is referred to as "sweet", and is why honey is "sweet".
    5. You can taste the presence of amino acids, especially glutamates. This is referred to as "umami" or sometimes "savoury", and is why meat is "umami".
Taste is when you CHEMICALLY REACT or CHEMICALLY INTERACT a molecule with a PHYSICAL receptor on your tongue, dissolved in a solution of water and enzymes (saliva), and use it to determine some chemical property about the thing that's in your mouth. If you've ever had the displeasure to accidentally eat soap, you'll know it's very bitter - that's because soap is BASIC, and bases are bitter to us.
Smell is when you take volatile compounds in the AIR you inhale, mostly through your mouth but also through your nose (humans have quite a bad sense of smell, we mostly smell via our mouths as we eat), and bind the compounds in it to a series of complex, highly specialised receptors in your nose. These fire off complex, multi-layered signals to your brain which become associated not with a specific chemical reaction or process, but rather with a mental, emotional, and historical concept that your brain has developed individually over time. It's used to identify specific items, such as individual esters or ketones (e.g. SPECIFICALLY identifying benzaldehyde as being very almondy), rather than broad classes of molecules (e.g. generally saying that "ionic compounds taste weird and salty").
Strictly speaking... almost EVERYTHING we regard as "taste" is actually smell. However, to refer to "scent-based taste" is really unhelpful, because you can see how this is actually trying to use both of these meanings, in a way that obscures the truth. Like, it wants to claim to be "taste" so that lay people will understand it, but also try to weasel out of saying "so we put this in your mouth" by saying "but it's SCENT based!!" It's a complex thing that they're exploiting, basically.

Do you have a source for this? The only thing I can find is this link (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK279408/) which contradicts you on multiple accounts
