Yeah but you know we got to get a new speaker maybe a couple mods definitely a delay pedal oh yeah and an Overdrive. And we are definitely going to have to try a hundred different kind of tubes
@@stringlocker Ha ha, true. I have one and it sounds killer and fun with nothing in front of it, but really wakes up with delay and a splash of fuzz or od. It's honestly a perfect pedal platform for practicing with a hand-wired legit tube circuit. How awesome is that. I've swapped tubes too and they all sound great. It's just pure, simple, fun.
At 8:16 is tone heaven for jazz players. A friend is gigging and recording exactly like this - paired with a Princeton amp. Sweet smoky sound. One is crunchy and compressed and the other is beautifully open. He has a decent pedalboard too. I was astonished these tone you shared. Thank you for the excellent recording!
2024 and using a (modified, reduced plate dissipation/ Watts) VHT Special 6 for exactly what you did here with this Champ circuit. Thank you. For your efforts about all The glorious tones you can coax out of a Class A single ended, no tone stack tube design. It's all there.❤❤
Champs are Great Amps...I see the Tone King in the background...Played a Sky King for a couple years and moved to a Custom Plexi and never looked back...
The parts are a little more upper end on this one, different speaker, and the Ryra also has the on/off built into the volume knob as opposed to a separate switch.
Sounds great! I’m trying to pick a good microphone for my champ for one step above my e609 / 57 sounds - any tips? What kind of mic is that? Didn’t catch it in the vid
What’s the name of the song starting around 8:35? I learned from watching you but want to learn the rest and cannot think of the name. Love the sounds you get from this little champ BTW.
Thank you, that sounds correct. Actually I was thinking it was a song on Julian’s recent album Squint, and track 8, “quiet like a fuse” was close but not it.
The entire Derek and the Dominoes album was made with 2 small amps. Clapton had the Tweed Champ, and Duane Allman had the blackface Princeton Reverb. This is according to Tom Dowd. The tones on that album require no explanations or justifications. Now that volume of any kind is a Federeal offense, it's more important than ever to have an awesome amp that can deliver the tones at a level that will keep Karen from coming and screaming at you. The Tweed Champ is among the first choices. It's unbelievable how much harmonic complexity can come from such a simple circuit. It's the embodiment of the idea that less is more. I don't have a Champ, I have a 1956 5F2A Princeton, and it sounds like God shouting from the mountain top, only at volume levels that don't bring flashing blue and red lights into my driveway, at least not during the daytime. I did 3 mods to mine, all easily reversible. I removed the tone control and replaced it with a master volume. This gives me a volume control on both the 12AX7 and the 6V6. It lets me move the headroom and the edge of breakup any where I like at any volume. It helps to keep the anti loud nazis off my back and still be able to sound like a real amp. It's also extremely touch sensitive, and my right hand is my distortion control. No pedals needed. I also used a push pull pot for the master volume, Which is connected to the feedback loop. I can run it stock, or I can disconnect the loop, and get a more raw, almost Vox kind of response. The last thing I did was to add a 25/25 bypass cap across the cathode of the 2nd half of the 12AX7. This increases the gain dramatically when cranked, but when you back it off, the sweet clean thing comes right back. I have a nearly infinite range of tones avaliable, from clean to dirty, and there's not a bad sound to be had anywhere within that range. If you can't make this one sound good, you can't play. Period. These 3 changes have dramatically increased the versatility of this amp, and I routinely turn down offers from people trying to buy it from me. I tell them "You can't have this one, it's mine, but if you want to comission me to build you one, I can make you an exact duplicate of it from a re issue for what you're offering me for this one" I saved all of the original parts, and put them away safely, just in case somebody wants to trade me their house for it or some ridiculous collector insanity like that. But as far as I'm concerned, this one is a keeper. The next time it changes hands will be at my estate sale.
There will be a lot of color from the cab and speaker, but that might be exactly what you are looking for :) Maybe turn off the Cab and Power Amp sim in your modeller and you can find some really cool tones from there!
All a guitar player ever needs. They should have just built that and a deluxe without changes over the last 7 decades instead of all that terrible crap.
Then the company never would have survived the period of live music in the 60s before PAs were advanced enough to amplify little amps to stadium volumes. Those “crap” amps you don’t like were developed to be able to be heard in increasingly loud venues at a time when PAs were only good for amplifying vocals.
I enjoy - among many other things - the fact that Jay's guitar(s) are always perfectly tuned.
Every guitar player needs an amp like this. Straight in, no effects, no b.s..
Yeah!

Nocturne sounded great, Jay! Lage's perfomance on that one has been a life changer for me! So glad to hear you play it!
The best 5f1 presentation I've seen. Really touched all the bases on this one
Julian lage definitely has my favorite champ tones
He's a living legend. Love his touch and phrasing!!

I'm sitting here stunned--excellent tone and touch! Enjoyed it, thanks.
Really appreciate it, thanks!
Super demo Jay- I am happy to see how many Julian Lage fans you have on your channel.
Thanks so much!!! I think he is the modern face of the Tweed Champ sound and he just knows how to make them sing soooo good :)
the champ plays champ
Fantastic run through Jay. Love your unique playing. 😎👍
Champs are Great Amps...I see the Tone King in the background...Played a Sky King for a couple years and moved to a Custom Plexi and never looked back...
Oh man, the Lage bit was spot on.
From the top of my head: Julian Lage - Ryland, Jeff Beck - cause we've ended as lovers, Aerosmith - dream on, ZZ top- la grange.
Lage’s Ryland is almost too good 👍🏻
I have a small stash of old silver/black panel fender amps, but my 5f1 I made from a kit gets A LOT of attention.
Yeah, such an simple and fun circuit to play and work on!
Heck only one song, although many examples exist, need be mentioned when the venerable Champ comes up: "Layla."
Fantastic playing!
Wicked video on the 5f1. Great playing also
I just picked up a mojotone 5f1 with a Jensen 8”
Beautiful playing man
Thanks :)
I just ordered one of these. This demo was a big reason why
I really appreciate it. Hope you dig it!
I just hand built one using old transformers 3 tubes and extra parts
It sound just as nice as well
Awesome!
Nice with the J Beck
This is simply FANTASTIC stuff. Very impressive, truly fun to watch.
Seriously amazing demo! Are you going to demo the The Elegante too?
You know it :)
❤. Great video Jay. I have a 52 Tweed clone, yep it's darn nice. I swear you look like my first cousin from Chicago.
Sounds like a super handsome dude, haha
Reminded me that I must learn to play Dream On.
Yep, the reality of amps used V perception.
Pignose needs the same reverence.
Sounded great BTW.
Great video! All of yours are, great to follow you. What is the difference between this and the Fender 57 champ?
The parts are a little more upper end on this one, different speaker, and the Ryra also has the on/off built into the volume knob as opposed to a separate switch.
@@JayLeonardJ thank you !
J, love all the tones anda the play! Congrats!! Witch mic do you use to record the champ?
A Cascade Fathead II
@@JayLeonardJ Thanks!
Fantastic video! Love champ amps
Thanks so much!!
The Jeff Beck bit was 💯 % spot on!
Thanks so much. Love that tune.

It is a Cascade Fathead II. Really fun mic :) That being said, I love micing with a 57 :)
Does anyone know which microphone he is using there? Looks a lot like a Beyerdynamic M130, but it's probably something else?
It is a Cascade Fathead II :)
I love this amp, got one a few months back, simply perfection to the highest standards
Congrats, been really loving mine! Use it a TON :)
Hey Jay , tht dude sounds good . All of it , guitar , amp , ur playin . All good . Love the channel.
One more time . Lol the "dream on" intro . From here it wld be hard to tell , urself from the Aerosmith recording . Thts pretty cool.
Thanks!

I believe it’s Nocturne By Julian Lage

Sounds sick!
4:20 song?
"Rocky Mountain Way" - Joe Walsh
@@JayLeonardJ it’s not! 😂
@@pablors90 Funk #49 - James Gang
Is that with 12ax7 or 12ay7 in the preamp?
I believe mine has a 12AY7 in that slot.

I imagine this amp has no dynamics when the drummer starts playing?
Depends on the drummer ;)
Spoiler: This amp costs about the same as the Fender '57 Custom Champ, which is available new from all bigger retailers.

I know the noun "retard" isn't PC but...sometimes no other word will do.

is it me or the 🎤 look like a penny?
I'm thinking "steampunk shower head" 😄
