Esad indeed paints on paper. All those Conan pages are in watercolour, tempera and gouache.
A master.
It is the same dude his helmets on the tabe in the top left panel. Conan escaped in the night and got a little revenge before he left
What I think happened at the end, is that when Conan is looking at the lit up window, he sees that that is where his captor went after they tied him up. Conan is thinking to himself, "I'm going to kill that guy before I leave." Then when everyone is asleep, he breaks free, kills that guy, and gets the heck out of there.
Yes, the guy who captured him, who was also shown a few pages before, where Conan milks the goat, with the sword Conan walks away with in the end, was the one that was killed as shown by the guy's helmet being in the room where he was killed in bed by Conan, who then stole his sword.
Esad Ribić did also another fantastic job in Jason Aaron’s run on Thor.
Would love it if you went through some of the classic Savage Sword of Conan black and white magazines from the '70s and '80s sometime!
100% agree!! Love Barry Windsor smith but I fell in love with Buscemas epic run on Conan. They need to do a deep dive in his early work on the run before Chan and others really did the heavy lifting of his layouts. Also, is it bad I enjoyed the the Aaron/ Asrar run at marvel? I loved the stand alone one shot stories vibe we got. Idk maybe just me
I interpret the Conan captured sequence as a mistake on the foreign kingdom's part, sort of an Ice T 'shoulda killed me last year' moment or an Austin Powers unobserved death-trap situation. The last light going out is the "King's" room as he's the last man working. When the "servant" comes into the room (2nd panel) the "king's" helmet is on a stand. Conan breaks free (of course he does) and gives the king the same mercy and aid that he received.
Absolutely. To me it wasn't confusing, I interpreted it the exact same way you did,
Esad is one of my favorite current artists. Glad you covered this one. I dont always enjoy some of his stylistic eye choices but he is tremendously talented.
The Cimmerian comics from Ablaze are cool too.
This is a beautiful comic. It was reprinted in a thin trade EXODUS AND OTHER TALES with other short stories that have fantastic art from Steve McNiven , ROBERTO DE LA TORRE, JESUS SAIZ. I hope Titan reprint it in an oversized Hardcover version.
The Jesus character laying dead in the bed, is the Helmeted guy that lead the attack that got Conan shot with the arrow and catches Conan again later. The helmet is seen in the panel when the girls pulls the curtain to the tower room. Soo Of course Conan is not just going to escape, but has to wait for the dude to fall asleep, and then kill him and get away. How he got away?
its like when Batman dissapears , you dont show the trick, we just need to know Conan has the skills to do it. The last panel shows Conan with a bloody nose, so he probably headbuttet a guard. Thats how I read it anyways.
The best Conan comic in recent years is The Frost Giants Daughter published by Ablaze. Stunningly beautiful. Would love to watch your review of it.
I love those Cimmerian hardcovers.
Been writing and drawing my own winter survival comic and you guys posted this. Been struggling to find any actual cool stuff that could inspire me, I'm gonna have to check this one out.
If you don't know Winterworld by Dixon/Zaffino yet, that's a must! Stunning art. I definitely feel the cold reading that one;) Always impressive when artists capture the fight against the elements of nature well. Probably not the first guy one would think of, but Barks did it really well in some of his adventure stories!
Good luck with your comic!
Beautiful work that does a lot for the worldbuilding. It's been ages since I've picked up a Conan comic. Will have to pick this up and revisit that world again.
Leo movie - either Cocaine bear or The Revenant.
Would love to see you guys cover the Ablaze Conan comics from France.
Ribic is one of my favorite modern artists, does a great Thor.
Ribic's work is ALWAYS amazing. His work on Thor years ago is some of the best Thor comics ever.
Tradd Moore is doing an almost solo Dr Strange book at the minute. My favourite is Brendon Macarthys Spiderman: Fever under the Marvel Knight line.
Toth Amon released Conan, it was a power grab for the King to be killed. The second story in the series was going to make that clear, but with Marvel
losing the rights to Conan (I inadvertently released that news prior to Marvel announcing it, caused a bit of a shit storm online), we never got to see it. It was a good second part, also a silent story. Esad had a cover done (which hangs in my house), the final
panel was going to be Conan reaching Aquilonia (civilisation). Imho, the book should have printed in a larger format, something I’ve told Esad many times.
what a wonderful comic. thank you.
Like clockwork! We were just going through old Conan comics drawn by John Buscema and looking back at How to Make Comics the Marvel Way. The Robert E Howard novels are worth a read too.
Thrilled to see the Kayfabe guys giving some love to Ribic, one of the best guys in the game at the moment. Also nice to see them looking at some contemporary stuff, sure a lot of modern big two stuff (even image stuff) is your standard Wednesday fare, but there are some really exceptional comics that have been coming out in the last several years
Ron Garney did a run on Savage Sword around the same time. It's pretty sweet looking. Marvel printed a black and white version, too.
This is the kind of shit I love, I'm looking for recommendations of comics with a "painted" or brushed look rather than the conventional pen and ink treatment (if you will).
I'm definitely going to look for this.
The horned god, Slaine
Esad is a talent. I've watched him draw at a panel and it was so incredibly easy for him.
I'm glad Ribic is doing stuff outside of superhero books. Don't get me wrong, he can draw the hell out of a spandex fight scene (Ultimates springs to mind) but we deserve to see more than that from him.
i always compare him to Alex Ross, in fact i think Ribic is a better storyteller.
Esad Ribic he paints everything oldschool, nothing digital. Namor is another story of his that is very good, it falls with the line of Must Have from Marvel.
Man I wish they did more of this
The helmet is the clue. It is the same bearded guy on the previous page. On the page where the man is dead, the helmet is the main focus of the second panel. The page before, Conan sees where the guy goes because the guy is barking orders through the window in the tower. Conan escapes at night and kills him.
I love ribics work in thors God butcher story. This Conan looks awesome. Thanks for sharing
Great artist. There are some great vids of him on UA-cam sketching, painting etc. Hunt 'em down. I first heard of him on Uncanny X-Force. Jerrome Opena's work on that book was pretty sweet too. Esad's work on Jason Aaron's Thor is great, the best shots in the Thor Love and Thunder "movie" (cough cough) were lifted straight from his pages. His work on the recent/current run of Eternals is very solid too.
I love the channel, one of my favorites, never miss a video, but when will you guys learn what the word "whenever" means?
Check out a book called Valkyrie, published by Soleil and drawn by Drazen Kovacevic. The guy always said he would love to draw Conan and in this comic book, we can see a glimpse of what that would look like.
This and Jim Zub's material was the best thing to come out of Conan when they regained the license.
Esas Ribic hand painted this, which is astounding. He is an absolute master at the craft, and I've had the pleasure of meeting him briefly and I own a commissioned painting of a favorite character of mine from him. Hes in my opinion one of the best artists working today.
I have to dig that one out and revisit.
Great stuff.
Conan comics were a full story in each comic; no need to buy multiple issues to get an end. Roy Thomas taught me to read.
great issue, I got it when it came out, just before Marvel was loosing the Conan game, perhaps a Conan grand design from you guys?
Incredible!
I hope they do a oversized deluxe edition of this. It’s beautiful. There’s a trade called Conan Exudes and other stories that needs the deluxe treatment
unotha banguh
Great comic!
Check out Peter Milligan's Sub-Mariner : The Depths illustrated by Esad Ribić. One of the greatest Namor comics ever, beautifully drawn. It's Event Horizon underwater.
I wish you could do a “Grand Design “ type book for Conan at Titan…
that was very cool.
It is on paper, gouache I think. Esad used to go to thought bubble comic con in the uk and just do like a3 paintings sat at his desk for commissions amazing to watch him work. I hope they get esad ribic on the new (titan?) conan books he’s one of the best artists of today
The first time I saw Esad artwork is X-men,Children of the Atom mini series from ‘99/00 ,written by Joe Casey,1-3 art by Steve Rude,4 by Paul Smith and 5&6 by Esad! Typically Marvel hambone schedule took a interesting book just turns crap fast and point to make is Esad did a serviceable job and later a Loki painted series and one of my favorites, Silver Surfer with JM Straczynski and really left behind that X-men job in the rear view mirror! I would like to see you guys review that series at some point? 😎👍🎯Keep reading and making comix!⚡️
Everyone should also check out Essads' VS mini series from Image
Esad is an analog artist. Paint and paper.
I would say P.Craig Russell’s “Jewels of Gwahlur” and the Darick Robertson one shot “The Weight of the Crown” are better and honourable mentions for the Gary Nord,Tim Truman,Eric Powell,Thomas Giorello art from the Dark Horse books.
The 2020 King Size Conan from Marvel with Steve Mcniven and Kevin Eastman art is very good and worth looking at for a future video.
The Cimmerian books are also interesting.
So cinematic
The movie is The Revenant!
Ive never read conan does anyone have recommendations for the best conan comics to read??
The last pages are fairly clear. Conan, though captured earlier when surrounded, is still strong enough to escape and enact his will once they forget his presence. When the last light goes out he exacts his revenge, and kills the king. The next day when they go to check on the King, he's dead, the last panel the guards notice that Conan is missing.
The last light to go off in a castle is often the king's. The bearded dude's helmet might also have some meaning that connects this to a classic later tale, but I dunno. I think it's just that a painted book takes a lot of work, and Ribic ran out of time/steam.
And page count
Revenant
The Revenant is the movie you're thinking of.
chingon / fantastic
Thought Ribic does most of his stuff trad?
If you liked this, check out the Conan by Mignola (written only, sadly) published by Dark Horse. The art is nice, but no comparison with Rebic
realy great artwork!!! BUT, I think Conan was a 70s thing, if you compere it with the Smith and eraly Buscema, Gil Kane books, the new stuf bores me. Maybe I am to old.
Why are the Conan books gone from the Marvel app?
They have lost the license it’s now in the hands of Titan Comics
Primal
I'm not a fan of Conan but this is one of my three favourite Conan stories...the other two are "what if conan walked the earth today" and Red nails
This is very PRIMAL (ish) as well.
Came here to say this. Those beats of Conan's facial expressions reminded me of the show.
I don't particularly like that art style for Conan, he looks too smiley imho
Of all that is *MAN* I am definitely lookin for this badassery! 💪🤘
