Saved in the highest quality settings there were, as a m2ts file. Although UA-cam DOES degrade any video..... it's as good as it'll get.

    "He's frozen!"
Dynamite drop-in there Troi. Did your empathic sense tell you that?

FYI to all: The "Pink" hue had something to do with compensating for colour variation on the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TVs that were the norm back in 1986. Todays flat screen tech is able to display colours in far better quality and as the maker inteded. The "pink" hue is thus very apparent on our screens today. But it wasn't back in the days of yore.

I thought the the pinkish colors were part of the color scheme of the ship. I kinda wish they could have kept them a bit that way, while getting rid of the overall tinting problem, I though the colors were less sterile of an interior design. But the sharpness of the HD is awesome.

The pink carpeting on the bridge coupled with the high intensity set lighting created a lot of glow in the lower quality shots, is what I'm thinking.

Even after her promotion in season 7 they kept calling her "counselor."

The original series, by comparison, had its effects done optically on the film negative, so its actually in many ways always looked way better than TNG in terms of picture quality since transfers were being done from the original film. Amazing to finally see TNG looking so good, the uniforms really look so much better in their proper colors.

The show was shot on film, but transferred to hideous looking video tape for the special effects and broadcast. For the Blu Ray they've gone back to the original negative, hence the need to recreate the effects, which only existed on the ugly tape version. That ugly tape version is what we've seen for years on TV and DVD, the Blu Ray is the first time you're seeing the original film negative used as the source for the transfer. Hence it looks WAY better. But whoa, magenta hue here is terrible.

Is it true that the original negative was transferred to video tape for easy editing and for easier compositing of CGI? Please explain..thx!
When i watched this back in 87' i thought it looked like crap..was not sharp and had murky contrast. Now...it looks amazing :) remastered.

Woah, completely different shot of Ensign Redshirt getting frozen!
Or maybe the original was zoomed in, hard to tell with split screen.
Either way, the direction of the spray from off camera is now very apparent.

One of the things that added to that effect was the old school lighting designer in the first few seasons. He was from the same era as the 1960s versions where they just shone coloured lights all over the place. You can also notice a lot of shadows all over the set in the early seasons. I think they fired him.

Why was there a pink tinge on the SD version in the first place? That's not even to do with the resolution, that's somebody's weird colour timing.

The reason why the restored version looks much much better is because it was shot on 35mm film. As everything should be. It was transfered to crappy videotape for editing and special effects, that's why it looks so shitty in the old transfer. For the new HD transfer, they got back to the original film negatives.

The fact that you saw such a big difference between the TV quality and film quality, so much so that you thought they re-did the whole thing in CG, just shows how worthwhile the new version is.

  • @monkeyman767
    @monkeyman767 12 років тому +2

It was actually even that on the TV airings too. the HD difference is amazing

It's really very simple, once you look at all the episodes on the list and eliminate all of the cutscenes that were just models or camera tricks. The Reading Rainbow episode of Star Trek explains how most of the season one visual effects were done.

There's the time singularity wind-chime thing from "We'll always have Paris" and the destruction of the SS Tsiolkovsky from "The naked now" But you're right. Very light on the CG.

What really funny is that in HD you can see that he isnt frozen 1:20 its just cream haha,
It looks more like he is frozen in the SD quality :)

yup, i agree...that's why i stopped watching TNG after 20 episodes in 87'. The remasters look amazing, so it's like a new discovery for me.

  • @borghome

It's hard to believe that they went that route for cost savings. Back in 1987' i thought something was wrong with my cable, or the station had transmission problems. So the truth was for easier digital editing??...& CGI compositing.
There was no sharpness, no saturation, and no contrast...all too murky.
Well in my opinion, it was a big fail. But now remastered, it's out of this world. Will ST:Voyager receive the same treatment??

I don't see how it was a compensation. I remember seeing RED looking RED on other shows back in the 80's. I think some technician made a huge mistake thinking it was the correct move to "compensate".
Why did no one raise a voice over this....talking to you Rick Berman!...hehe!

The three things i remember most from this episode was Mirina Sirtis in a skirt, Q and giant space jelly fish. Its about time they spruce up the 1st season of TNG, he film quality of that first season was so different from subsequent ones.

Yeah, but what he's saying is: she's still a commander. That's like saying Beverly Crusher isn't a commander or that Julian Bashir isn't a lieutenant just because people call them "doctors".

The first season of TNG did look even worse than TOS , but being a lot newer and having much better production values TNG was later able to look better.

I'm not sure that's it. CRT is really not inferior technology. Some of the most demanding graphic artists will still use it because it arguably better than even some IPS LED-LCD monitors.
