Nina's take on this was exquisitely personal and any attempt to cover it would have to offer a unique perspective or risk insult. Andra did a great job of creating contrast by expressing such dark passion in the language of jazz.
totally agree... no anger no fury
I don't dislike it, I just feel it lacks the energy and full expression of the original. It is smooth, no doubt, though I think too much so,to convey the true intention of the song. Ms. Day's voice is beautiful and I look forward to hearing more of her.
She performed it at Sundance really angrily. Amazing.

Crystal Clowney Ok. I guess she realized what happened to "Hatshepsut" for writing and singing the anthem. Wow. . .the UNFLENCHING SPIRIT OF THE MULTI-DIMENSIONAL GODSEND, EUNICE K. WAYMON. The fear she had as a result of fulfilling her purpose here was from her human dimension. Our purpose driven life is not ours to control; and we cannot deny it.
FINALLY, America has a new [old school real] voice that matches those we've only heard coming from the U.K. in the past few decades. IOW, a real vocalist who doesn't need auto-tune. I'm enraptured by that voice and beauty to boot, both physically and vocally. Wow. Wishing you much success. (Thanks to the simple snippet heard on a t.v. commercial, I was like, WHO'S THAT!?)
I had an opportunity to see her in concert last night (10/2/16) in Tulsa, OK and this woman is AMAZINGLY talented her voice is epic and timeless. Her style, grace, and poise radiates through her voice. #ForeverAFan #CheersToTheFall

Andra has a nice voice, and I like her style. But this is a bad recording. Mississippi Goddam is a song of passion and anger. It's not meant to be sung with such a lax and carefree technique. IMO, Chaka Khan should have sang it.

She has a gorgeous voice just not for this song.
Nina Simone left the USA because of racism. Here we are 2018 with Trump Racism running rampant. We have not come far. I’m sure if she was alive she would not come back to USA at this time. So sad
