    Succinct update! I literally just bought a MacBook Pro (M3 Pro) and then hear about this. Probably not worth me waiting for this and despite all the videos about this new AI-M4 chipset there’s no real indication of what the real world applications will be. the obvious answer is that it will be better at certain processes and faster, particularly with pro level workflows but I’m not holding my breath for anything groundbreaking… right?!?

    Topaz Photo AI uses mostly the neural engine. Increasing the number of cores as well as the speed of them would do wonders to sharpening, pixel enlargement, and noise reduction. In some tasks my M1Pro just plain bogs down and takes 3 or four minutes with just a single 1 gig photo. Selecting the subject is sometimes just impossible. A minimum of 36 GB RAM is also essential. When I bought the M1Pro it ran everything I had very fast, but in 3.5 years, nit so much, and the current m3max is really only a few seconds better.

    Does Apple skip M3 Max for Mac Studio and go straight for M4 on this platform? Then how about M3 Max in Mac Mini form factor in June 2024 as a high end product?

    • @thejamescaddy
      @thejamescaddy Місяць тому

      I think it would make a lot of sense! it would prolong the life of the pro level machines if that platform launches the new generation of M chips, rather than it kinda feeling superseded within months like when each M3 chip could give the tier up in the previous M2 generation a run for its money.

    Type and number of cores is what I'm interested in especially with AI being thrown about. I worry that AI focus might plateau or even reduce performance for non-graphic and non-AI applications. TL;DR. The (lame) answer to your first question, it will do AI operations faster. :^D My guess as for the why - the need for a reasonable responsive Siri. Longer answer, there's two main AI type tasks, training and inference. If it's training, the chip will be optimized for "multiple and accumulate" operations (and parallel), if for interference (retrieval data out of an AI model), parallel and faster/wider memory access. The bigger the AI data model, the more useful it is, but the longer it takes to infer / get data out of. And they probably want Siri to be both useful and responsive.

    • @PCJISNOW17

      It means these new chips will be able to handle high tasks with AI at a simple rate and not make it have bad performance when using AI as since macOS is a heavy os new MacBooks and chips would need newer technology to make the ai tasks process fast with the new chips.

    Are you able to borrow/“procure” two »identical« M3 MacBook Pros, one, the base configuration, RAM and SSD; the second with »max« RAM and SSD, and then identically benchmark BOTH?
    I’m dying to know if the heat that RAM generates and the SCORCHING 🔥 heat SSDs are infamous for causes a performance hit if they are larger in capacity inside the identical chassis. Will the fan in the RAM/SSD-maxxed out MacBook Pro compensate - so no performance hit? Are they louder because of more fan activity? And does lower RAM and SSD capacity in an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro equate to higher performance? If so, how much? Negligible or significant?
    (I see a lot of video comparisons that say things like, “Well, this one’s a 14-inch not a 16-inch, but that shouldn’t matter in the comparison…” But, as you know, driving a larger, higher resolution display makes SoCs work harder, but at the same time, the larger chassis size allows more room for heat dissipation, so the only apt comparisons are between identical models except for, as I said, RAM and SSD size.)
    Thanks.

      The same argument could be applied to M2 Pro as well. M2 Pro MacBooks came out in early 2023, and by October-end we had M3 Pro MacBooks too. So by that logic something was wrong with M2 Pro as well, even more so because it was on sale for less time than what is being rumoured for M3.

As for a Mac Mini, why the hell can’t Apple put an SD card slot on the front, and a USB C port as well. Yes, I know there are docks and dongles, but it would be nice to have Apple do something practical for once.
