for any new guys that just found this 9 year old video (at the time of writing), the Gaia Ex-06 fluorescent clear has been discontinued (Ex-06 is now Flat Black) and in my opinion the best replacement would be Gaianotes 110 Fluorescent Clear.

Thanks for the painting tip. I did not know that.

I like when people leave their mistakes in their vids. I, like you, wish I'd thought how paint reacts with styrene. 100% DESTROYED a rare Takara Acroyear model by spraying it with some fancy-pants (expensive) chrome. It made the plastic RUPTURE into a pile of bubbled blisters. It was shocking. lol.

Gaia Notes paints are nice. For the heck of it, I looked up their home building on Google Maps and found it on foot in Tokyo. I'm slowly putting together a video of all the model companies' buildings in Japan. Nearly complete. Anyway, it's said that Gaia Notes paint is compatible with Mr. Color paint. The only Gaia Notes stuff I have are a silver and black primers.
I've never thought of dipping a part into lacquer paint. Acrylic paints are fine, of course. If you want to replace that part, you know I can help you with that. Bandai is in the next city over from where I live, you know! ;)

***** Yes, I've been outside of Bandai's hobby HQ building before. Haven't been inside though, since you must win a lottery to win the privilege to take a tour. Shizuoka City is the home to many model companies, like Bandai, Tamiya, Aoshima, and Fujimi. Hasegawa and Sweet Aviation are located nearby, too.

***** I think it's just because Gunpla is such a huge phenomenon here in Japan. While Tamiya welcomes visitors to their HQ and provides a fun place to spend time. My friend was able to tour Bandai's Hobby Center a few years ago, and could even take pictures. These days, however, Bandai restricts cameras from what I understand. At Tamiya, I have taken lots of video. However there are some places where cameras are forbidden.

Do you have any idea where I can get gaianotes' paint in Tokyo? Pretty sure they don't have a physical store right?

Yeah, after killing numerous parts I now test everything on extra runners. Airbrushing the paint doesn't hurt it, but dipping them? I learned not to do that. Goodbye Exia leg jewels! Melted green goop you became.

Would using mr.super clear gloss sealant after applying that affects the glow?

As soon as you said "It's a lacquer paint" I was like "Oh no....."

So this could only be seen only under UV light? That's a waste

Wow. "Should never paint lacquer direct onto styrene" huh? Except hundreds of thousands of modellers have been doing exactly that for the past 50 years or more.
Mr Surfacer? Its a lacquer. Tamiya spray cans? Yep, lacquers too. Alclad, GSI Creos metalizers, yes all of them are lacquers. The entire Mr Color range of paints are laquers. Mr Paint from eastern europe, lacquer again.
Should you dip plastic into lacquer paint? No. Why would you do that? Why would you dip ANYTHING in paint?
In any case, If youre going to paint anything in plastic, the first layer of paint should be primer, and it should definitely be lacquer based. Anything less will not bite into the paint sufficiently.

      +Agraviadore I get your point.

+2Old4Toys sorry. As a modeller, i get quite frustrated with thr gundam community and how little they know. Modelling planes and tanks has been around 60 years, railroad even longer. To ignore that wealth of knowledge is crazy. Whether youre build planes or gundams, 80% of trouble is navigating the minefield of products available, and in todays internet era theres no longer a need for guesswork or trial and error.

yep that's what turned me off from gunpla. Most of them seem happy to paint a kit in a simple scheme and call it a day. Weathering and interesting camos are almost unheard of. No advancement of skill, just rinse and repeat with each new kit release.

    • @Agraviadore
      @Agraviadore 8 років тому +1

Exactly. Theyre stuck in a bubble of ignorance. New approaches, new products, new techniques come out all the time in armor and aircraft modelling. Chipping on tanks has been perfected within each technique, meanwhile i see chipping done on gunpla with silver paint and sponge over the basecoat. Its like they cant even be bothered using google.

I'm a giant WW enthusiast, specifically concerning Late planes. But this type of mentality is something I discourage. It exudes a superiority complex that drives away people from modelling in general. It's true, that certain sub-communities of modelling lacks in creativity, but to bitterly criticize isn't helping the hobby grow. Modelling of all sorts should be encourage. If you see something that can help a fellow modeller improve, offer them some advice rather than bashing on them for not "googling". Why in the world wouldn't you want to personally help someone from such a small community out? It doesn't make sense, unless you don't want to be part of the community in the first place and just want to solo-build. If that's the case, there's not even a need to go around spewing criticism if you're not directly contributing to the community.
