- The Black Mountain Quarries - Another hidden gem in Wales.
I take a road trip to the rugged Black Mountain area of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. The Brecon Beacons National Park is famous for its walks, wildlife and tranquillity but massive changes took place during the Industrial Revolution.
Within this picturesque landscape in Carmarthenshire on the western side of the Brecon Beacons, you can find the industrial remains of the limestone industry.
The path takes you around the Black Mountain Quarries also known as Herbert’s Quarry. You can see the imposing rock faces, lime kilns, quarries and spoil tips, the remains of the lime works which date back over 200 years.
The quarries were only accessed by expensive toll roads and this area became the centre for the Rebecca Riots between 1839 and 1843. During the protests, men in disguise attacked and burnt the tollgates during the night.
Herbert’s Quarry is part of the Mynydd Du SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the Black Mountain and Mynydd Myddfai Registered Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales.
As well as the industrial heritage walk there are many other Brecon Beacons walks you can take from this area.
The quarries can be found off the A4069 between Brynaman and Llangadog, there are two free car parks.
The audio tour of the Black Mountain Quarries can be found here dyfedarchaeolo...

Thanks 👍
Fantastic walk 🌾🍄🌳🦉 caz
Great video thanks for taking the time ti share
Thanks for watching!
We are off to Wales tomorrow from southern,England, and, because of you video, we will be going to see Herbert’s Quarry on our way up to Dolgamedd in Snowdonia
Looks like you are going to have a great week for weather - sunny and dry (Although Snowdonia can do anything at anytime)
@@flydriveexplore Hi, I’ve just seen your reply. Yes we had great weather, a bit chilly in the evening camping but beautiful clear views on our journey. On the way up we stopped at Herbert’s Quarry for a short time and we’re going to explore a bit more on the way home. However, as you said, the weather can change, and it did! You couldn’t see anything when we went there again on the way home. 5mph driving through the clouds…Definitely worth a longer visit next time.
I was in the car park Sunday morning at sunrise, and it was probably one of the most incredible sights I've ever seen.
It must be especially at dawn over the mountains on a clear day.
lovely video thanks
Thanks
Lovely video, thank you we plan to visit here
Thanks, there are some good walks from here
Very interesting as always.Lime is used a lot in farming and steel making. The name Herbert crops up quite a bit in Welsh history.Digestive biscuits, what no fish and chips.
Unfortunately no chip shop available this time.
@@flydriveexplore Lol.😆
I'm really enjoying these walks with you. Thanks a lot.
Glad you like them!
Great Video as always . Brilliant 👍👍
Fascinating History of this area which I had no idea of and we drove past the site on the way to Llangadog without even realising it existed. I think we were distracted by the stunning scenery. 😃
Thanks for posting 👍👍👍😃
Glad you enjoyed it. I didn't realise there was so much there until my visit.
Great stuff.. Well just as you mentioned on another vid even us locals can over look great places like this. Thank you , Russ Caerphilly
Cheers 👍

Another great video Marcus. Very interesting. Thank you.
Thanks, it was good to take a little drive for a change
Love your videos especially this one I don’t live very for from the black mountain and we go up there very often especially on nice days for the views. Not far from those quarries are some Bronze Age grave mounds maybe you could do a video on the,
Thanks for watching. I did see the burial mounds marked on the map I had but just didn't have time on this visit. Will definitely be going back.
Just discovered your videos. Very enjoyable. Excellent quality. Looking forward to more.
Grreat, thank you for watching.
Sad Story about Dai Twice.
The rest, beautiful.
If there's one thing I love about Wales it's Bleak is Beautiful.
To quote an old acquaintance, 'Magnificent Desolation'.
Agree, definitely something special about those rugged open spaces.
Another great video pal. Thanks for the post 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
This is an obscure place, but i love the vid, please do some more?
I was up there this morning!
Great footage 👍...
Thanks for watching.
Lovely video. This is an area I wanted to explore when I went to Wales. I don't know if or when I'll ever get there, but it is so nice to see this part of it.
The Brecon Beacons are really interesting form villages and market towns to rugged moors and mountains. Well worth a trip and it's only a short drive from the coast.
What a fascinating yet forlorn place. I will certainly be making a visit to this wonderful area - I am amazed at just how deliciously devoid of people it is - which suits me down to the ground. As far as I am concerned, Hell is other people.
It was quiet but it was a weekday. Not sure how busy it gets at the weekend but if you go early it should be quiet and there's plenty of countryside to get away from anybody.
No man is a island.
I live on the black mountain pass and trust me, weekends are NOT tranquil lol. I wouldn't live anywhere else though. That's for sure.
Recent subscriber man love you’re stuff and you’re way of editting I’ve been in a really bad rut with my channel and editting style and it shows with my views you’ve given me some ideas on how I can improve my stuff
Thanks for watching, I 'll take a look at some of your videos.
Travelling further now at least you are getting further afield more freedom nice drive chocolate digestives I like but troublesome they melt when warmer but ok with recent chill enjoyed a whole packet of digestives the weekend with some baby bell cheeses in a net when out in gower man can’t live on bread alone
Yep, it good to travel again, although not that far. BabyBel, what about good old fashioned Dairylea triangles?
THE BLACK MOUNTAIN NOT THE BLACK MOUNTAINS IS THAT WELSH 😆😉 AHHH THE OLD QUICK LIME WATCH OUT MEL😳😳 WAIT WHERE'S MEL MUHAHAHA 🤣 BEAUTIFUL SCENERY MARCUS N MAYBE MEL 😳🤣😆
Don't worry Mel's still around, she's been busy working while I've been out and about.
Was that area ever forested?
It may have been but it would have been a very long time ago. During the bronze age and into the iron age much of the area was cleared for grazing.
Enjoyed this tranquil walk with you. Sounds like a very dangerous industry. Haha Las Vegas is one of our family's favorites too. My kids are currently begging for a Vegas trip.
It's very tranquil but in the winter it must have been a hard place to work. Hopefully, we will be able to fly to the US and Vegas at some point in the not too distant future.
