- First tasted this cake in the mid 1960's when a friend of mine brought one to work to have with our morning coffee. Everyone loved it. It's very rich and moist.
Here are the ingredients:
1 box Duncan Hines Spice Cake Mix
1 Box 3.4 ounces Instant Vanilla Pudding
4 large eggs
1 cup sour cream (8 ounces)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup whole milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Bake in Bundt or tube pan (10") for 50 minutes
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10-20 minutes
Sprinkle the top with powdered sugar while still warm
Thanks for watching.

Made this today I added raisins and chopped nuts. It is so good and moist. It doesn't taste like a boxed mix. Thank you 😊
That baking spray is the tops of all invention. I love using it, makes baking so much more joyful, thanks for the recipe, sweet lady. Blessings
I made this last nite n it was sooooo good! I love using the spice cake mix as a base. Sometimes I add chopped apples or I add shredded carrots n raisins. It also makes a great fruitcake base 👍🍴♥️
Miss Phyllis, I wanted to update my comment. I baked the cake Friday night, and took it to work (I am a cook in a restaurant) Saturday morning. My crewmates all thought the cake was wonderful! Very moist, great flavor, not too-too sweet. I love those old 50's and 60's recipes, thank you so much!
That would be very popular, I'm sure -- I love spice cake. Butterscotch pudding might be a good option.
Looks amazing! Thanks, Phyllis. I love listening to you while you bake😌
R. McBride lol, that sounds perfect! I think so many of us look forward to our “Phyllis downtime” at the end of the day!😁💗
Just needed to let you know I get my daily fix of you now that I found your blog. This old gal is learning a lot from you. I feel like you are family and since you know the Lord I will one day get to hug you on streets of gold. Please keep sharing all the videos you do, I love your heart
Look forward to seeing you there.
That looks like a cake-and-coffee combo that would be especially nice to have on a cool Fall morning.
Them boxes of cake and other items started getting smaller in the 1970s. I remember when it started they would print on the box new and improved but over time nothing improved the only thing that changed is you got less for your money and they jacked the price up. My mother has been dead almost ten years but I remember her making her own pound cake in 60s but I was to little to remember what she put in it. It only burned in my memory because being little it was the only thing close to sweets I had in between my dad's payday. But for some reason in 1970s when I was a teenager she went to buying frozen pound cakes so her recipe is forever lost in time. This looks really yummy next time I go to the supermarket I'm going to buy the ingredients. Thank you for the recipe.
Love the retro recipes! I remember my Mom making this when i was a kid. Thanks for sharing with us.
I gotta tell y’all - I’m making this cake for the 3rd time. It’s sooo delicious and easy. 🤣🤣🤣
Momma always used the Duncan Heinz spice cake mix to make Daddy' favorite mincemeat fruit cakes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have made it and put orange juice into an. Extremely think butter cream frosting . It is delicious for something different. Growing up n the sixties, I had never heard of the pound cake. Thank you for sharing.
This reminds me of my father-in-law who died from cancer a number of years back. His favorite cake was spice cake with caramel icing. He was so sick from taking chemo, so anytime he said he wanted something to eat, I of course, jumped at the chance to make anything that sounded good to him. I remember that one of the last things he asked for was spice cake with caramel icing. I used this boxed cake mix and added some sour cream, that I just happened to have on hand that day. Back then, Duncan Heinz or Pillsbury also made a very good caramel icing. I can't find it any longer. I can still see him eating his cake that night.
I'm so happy for you posting this. thanks
I'm going to try this one! I love baking too!
Thanks Ms Phyllis!😊
God bless!
Will be great this fall for my Bible study group.
I made this cake for dessert and my whole family loved it. The cake was gone by the end of the night 😂 They told me how much they loved it and it was my way of showing the world what Phyllis taught me. Thank you Phyllis. We miss you.❤️
Another winner! IMHO Duncan Hines is the best box cake mix out there. I bet you could "pound cake-ify" about any flavor by adding that extra egg and the instant pudding.
That would be great for breakfast too! 😋👍
Ok...convinced me...the end product! Putting a boxed spice cake and instant vanilla pudding is on my shopping list! You give me the best recipes Miss Phyllis...Thankyou as always for being on YT! You are a pleasure and a delight and I enjoy very much each and every video you post! Blessings!
This looks so good thank you God Bless
I’ve always loved spice cake. Thanks
Great recipe. I have the same kitchen aid mixer...since1980. Love it. I am definitely going to make this cake! Thank you!
Can’t wait to try this tomorrow.
You are a Blessing.
I couldn’t get a spice cake mix, so I made your recipe with Devils Food mix and chocolate pudding. Came out great! Very moist. Only had to bake it for 40 minuets.
Mmmm. That'd be good with a dollop of Duncan Hines cream cheese frosting on it. Absolutely decadent!!
Mrs.Phyllis, my Mama made all kinds of sweets when I was little, but I don't remember this one. This looks and sounds sooooo delicious! Wish I had the cake made now! I love your recipes!
Phyllis, I made this today and it is yummy! It's a keeper. I shared it with my neighbors and they loved it!
I love me some spice cake. Thanks for sharing and it look so yummy!

I love the bakers joy a must have for bakers
I love spice cake. Thank you for the recipe. I can almost smell it now. :)
I will be making this soon for sure! Just can't thank you enough for taking the time to make the video and share with us all! Bless!!
That would be so good with a caramel glaze. Yummy
Looks absolutely delicious
Good looking cake! Looks delish!! I'm going to make one!
Looks delicious ☕🍮
Yes it works. Glad you got some Ms Phyllis. I love the bakers joy. No ma'am I don't taste the flour. But I used to grease and flour my pans the old fashion way. That's how was taught. Then I saw bakers joy on commercial and tried it. Glad you tried it. Now you'll love youre bunt pan .
Awwwwwwww my son and hubby don't like spice cake. My neighbor she makes spice cake a lot since it's her favorite and when she does she brings me a piece sooooooooooooooo I do believe it's time for me to make her one since I can use this recipe of yours and of course I will be cutting me a slice of it . I do have to be the taste tester :D thanks for another great recipe :)
Using a mixture of sugar and cinnamon after spraying or greasing pan makes a wonderful addition to cakes very good.....take cake out of pan before it cools.....
I am going to make this over the weekend. Thank you Phyllis!! 😀😀😊
This look so good thank you for sharing
All your desserts are fabulous! I can't wait to try this one ♥
That's a fine looking cake!💗
I love spice cake😋
Another home run!!!
@Phyllis: I really enjoyed your video! Spice cake is my favorite cake, next to an oatmeal apple cake. Lol at today's box mix is less than yesterday's mix! Isn't that the truth! I've also noticed that in the last few years. I have to use two boxed mixes for a decent double round layer cake or a decent looking cake anyway. You cant show up to whatever event is happening with a puny cake. My grandmother use to add pudding mixes to her cakes too. I don't know why but I just don't think of it although I have pudding mixes in my pantry. Thank you for the recipe & Thank you for sharing.
I planned to make this cake when I first saw it. Due to lots of unforeseen circumstances, I am just getting around to making this cake. It is in the oven as I type....30 more mins to go....can't wait.
Thank you so much, Mrs Phyllis!!!
My husband would love this with coffee again off to the store I go
I just got a cake mix and instant pudding. I'm going to bake that cake Friday to take to work, Miss Phyllis!
Another winner! I really enjoy your recipes from back in the day! ❤️Most I remember!
And this is why I am currently on a diet! Lol. It looks really good!!!
My aunt would make spice cake from scratch with a hard brown sugar icing. We would get one in the mail every Christmas. Seeing this cake made me 8 years old for a minute ☺
YUMMM!!! Thank you!
If I could choose one You Tuber to get snowed in with which doesn’t happen much in S.C. It would be PHYLLIS! I’m convinced had I been brought up with her I would have to be rolled out the door. I have made most all of her recipes.💕
Made it. Delicious.
Love my scraper blade for my mixer. Also, to avoid having to scrape the batter off of your blade, very slowly with the mixer head unlocked, lift the mixer head up out of the batter and the blade will spin all of the batter off of your blade. Ta da!!!!
Will try it. Never had spice cake before.
Yum. Thx Phyllis
Awesome cake, I'm making this one of my holiday cakes, I also use bakers joy, never had a cake stick.😊😊
Hi Phyllis im cooking now & wishing I had a piece of that yumm TFS 💙💙💙✌
They did that with ice cream too...we used to get a whole half gallon of ice cream, now, I think it is 1 1/2 quarts instead and still costs the same or more. lol Oh good news about the Baker's Joy spray too...I will have to buy some for my cakes too...I have been just using shortening or butter and no flour for a very long time now, because when I added the flour, the cake would always stick...I don't have that problem just using the shortening, but you have to remember to turn it out of the pan right away and I have forgotten to do that a couple of times...so, Baker's Joy just went on my grocery list. No more stuck bundt cakes now...I know that has to make you so happy now. That does look so good, Miss Phyllis and with coffee, it would be perfect for sure...I like too that you just dusted the top with 10X sugar too...so simple and it doesn't really need anything else. Thank you for another great recipe and the tip about the Baker's Joy, that you passed on too. Blessings to you and Mr. Bucky and the furbabies
Boy that looks good. Thanks
Looks delicious !!
I just made this tonight after work and it was delicious! Thank you for the recipe and your wonderful channel👌❤
Another great box cake "recipe" my pastor's wife told me about......mix up a yellow cake mix as directed. Add a can of any flavor icing to the batter. Cook it in a bundle pan as directed on the box. I always mix in the German Chocolate icing (the pecans and coconut) and everyone loves it. Surprisingly it's not too sweet.
That would be good with whipping cream on it!
Looks so delicious ... can’t wait to try this !
Looks absolutely delicious, I'm going to have to try this. Thanks Phyllis you are a whiz as always!
Hi Phyllis, looks delicious! Did you ever give anyone a taste of this cake when they were cranky about paying their taxes? I'll bet it would sweeten them up right quick! It might sweeten Steely up when he is annoyed with Sunny!
I prefer Daisy brand sour cream as I find it to the best. Baker's Joy is wonderful! I may try to make this. Thank you!
I sure miss sweet Phyliss. Making this cake today.❤✝️🥲
You can’t beat Duncan Hienz cake mixes for moistness.
Yum!!!
'Eye Candy'! I can almost taste that cake...and the smell of it...wonderful additions! I bet your friend was a storehouse of good recipes! Don't bundt pans dress up everything? I started getting the 'Wiltons' spray at Wmart from the cake décor dept. It's the same thing, but cheaper per oz than the Baker's Joy brand. I got two cans, so I don't run out! ; )
Thanks for the tip on the Wilton brand being cheaper. I need to buy two also so I don't run out.
Good information, thank you again.
Karyn B.... I do like the Baker's Joy very much, but am glad you took the time to share this information. Thanks.
I love spice cake !! Great video !
I am definitely making this! Looks delicious for sure❤️I am going have to get bakers joy cooking spray.
You will be delighted with the results of the Baker's Joy, it is especially nice since you don't have to get your hands all greasy. I put my cake pan in the sink to spray it to prevent the spray from getting
on my kitchen counter, much easier to clean the sink.
That looks so good!!❤️
Looks good I never had it before.
Will you consider making a cookbook to offer for sale? Modern recipes are too complicated and call for too many processed foods. I do not always get your new video releases. I have to find you on you tube to see what you are cooking.
Looks wonderful Miss Phyllis!🌷🚍
That spice cake is the best. I’ve made it from scratch a few times, but it’s never as good as the box mix.
OH MY!!!! Looks soooo good. How do you keep from gaining weight? We have eaten (3 of us) the entire buttermilk pie in 2 days. ???? Made the coconut cake to give away today and making the walnut pie in the morning.....
I do think the green smoothies every morning help us to not gain weight since they usually keep us from getting hungry until mid-afternoon which is when we have our main meal of the day.
Have you ever added any nuts or fruit to this recipe?......your videos make me cook more, thanks for posting
Have not used nuts in this recipe, I will tell you I came very close to pouring some maple syrup over my piece of the cake.
yum
Yum! ☕
Yum 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Phyllis...love your recipes. I would like to see a video of you making "Noodles Romanoff" (1960s or 1970s?). Not sure but I think it was from Betty Crocker back then. Thank you.
I LOVED those boxed mix Noodles Romanoff! I swear I became depressed when they stopped making them!
I used bakers joy for years but always had problems with nozzles making a mess. Pillsbury makes a “baking spray” like bakers joy that seems to have a better nozzle. Both are a million times better than having to grease and flour a pan!
My days of greasing and flouring baking pans is over since many of the viewers recommended
the Baker's Joy. I haven't made muffins very often because of having to grease the little cups.
Now everything has changed.
OMG yassssss 😍❤️💞😍
Delicious 👍🏼
Oh Ms. Phyllis....it looks DELICIOUS! I wonder if you know how to make tuna mousse? My Momma used to make it when I was little and since she's passed I can't seem to find a good recipe for it. If you know of a good recipe could you please do a video on it? Thanks for being wonderfully you! Peace, Blessings and love💗💗
