I absolutely ADORED the detail of the single bead of sweat dropping and sizzling on the pan to convey its heat. SO MANY Anime would have stopped several issues ago to explain how dwarves are resistant to heat, then reminded the audience here, but Dungeon Meshi respects its viewers and properly utilized the "show, don't tell" rule.
I like they hinted at it a bit with Senshi just having his thumb in the hot oil a few episodes back. Also probably why he wasn't mega phased at the fire trap going off near him
8:50 I love how Namari says that the stew is "so rich" after tasting it and then the shot cuts back to the stew with *richer* colors Such clever wordplay!
being a dunmeshi fan feels like being spoiled, not only do we get a weekly anime episode but we also get a weekly breakdown!!! thank you for making these theyre always so fun and full of interesting insights :]
ohh, I didn’t notice Namari’s change in expression when looking at Marcille or realize that there were reflections in the undine this ep! Thanks for pointing that out - and the warped drawing of Kiki for the camera effect was really cool!
It appears as if they intentionally saved the water effects and reflections for this episode, which leads me to believe the team is working with the bigger picture in mind rather the episode per episode basis some studios end up working on. I can't believe we're so close to mid season, looking forward to the next episode break down ✌🏼
Helmet-less Senshi looks almost exactly like Chillchuk's Shapeshifter version of him.. All masculine and his nose almost sculpted. Also that tentacle banana shot of Senshi, reminded me so much of an Spongebob Close up shot.
Maybe that’s why Laios didn’t take it as a trait to distinguish the fakes! He’d seen Senshi without his helmet but Marcille (who made the comment that false Senshi was oddly handsome) had not!
WEEKLY DUNMESHI BREAKDOWN LETSGOOOOOOOOOO!! But seriously, your videos have been a great help in appreciating animation and understanding the principles of the craft. Thank you so much for pumping these out!
The camera panning slowly to Senshi as he sincerely explains how cooking improves the absorption of nutrients abruptly snapping back to Marcille when she cuts him off got a huge laugh out of me. It was so simple, but so, so effective.
Another nice detail is the gnomes and their hired guards who are in fact their foster children, though it wasn't revealed and built upon in side comics until later in the manga iirc. Since the manga is now over, fans will mostly know this about them, and it feels like some lines and animation was updated to show the gnomes being much more concerned about Kiki being tentacle than they are in the manga's original chapter.
I love getting notifications for your episode breakdowns, it feels sorta like a book club bc I watch the episode and then come back and get to hear about some of the more technical elements and see if I noticed them during my watch through
always look forward to your commentary on each ep, it's now part of my weekly ritual lol I appreciate animation a lot, but your insightful remarks on animation knowhow, thoughtful editing flair in the video, and giving contextual details from the world and manga are really helping me understand and deepen my love for the show a whole lot. love it! keep doing what you're doing man
I love watching these because it makes me appreciate the truly amazing craftsmanship of the animation that I may have missed in my viewing Also, Senshi eyebrows confirmed!
I’ve been eager to see you mention that Namari headshot haha, but also as a first time DunMeshi watcher and an enthusiast for animation as a whole, I’m really loving this video series, and i think your channel rocks :D
Really enjoyed your notes comparing the manga to the anime, esp with how they transitioned the speech bubble gag into Laios being obscured by being out of frame - and the impact of the editing choice to cover Kiki's face to strengthen Laios face reveal. You talking about the shot allocation at the end has me cracking up, I know you're probably going ballistic over the newest episode (11) right now.
i love what little things im learning about animation from your commentary! there is no better youtube content than to listen to someone wax rhapsodical about a subject they're passionate about that i'm only passingly familiar with XD i really enjoy your style! thanks for sharing
I *adore* your Dungeon Meshi episode breakdowns. I'm sad after watching the show because the episode is over, but that just means I have your videos to look forward to! :)
Ever since I started watching this breakdown series, I feel like I've gained a much better appreciation for animation styles and techniques! Even while I was watching ep 9, I remember thinking "there are a lot more simple and still shots this ep, must be cooling down from all the really detailed high-energy stuff they did in the last two" which is a connection I probably wouldn't have made a few months ago
I'm in love with the dub for this show. I feel like this episode specifically shows just how good this cast is. I especially like how Laios's voice changes after being stung by the tentacles. I feel like that was less clear in the Japanese. No shade to the original voice cast, but their delivery felt more flat for this episode, whereas the English cast are constantly playing with their intonation. Also I think this is a great win for localisation, the English script still manages to feel natural and fitting while not losing anything in translation.
I have never heard of you before, Swamp Jawn, but your breakdowns of this and Episode 7 are amazing and have convinced me to follow your channel. Love the analysis of how Trigger is adapting these episodes.
I'M EARLY YAAAY I was wondering if anyone else noticed the water reflections on this episode, glad to see they were appreciated! This episode feels very "calm before the storm" knowing what's coming next but it still looks good, it excites me to see what's coming:D As always your commentary and visuals are awesome, I was eagerly awaiting this video even when I watched your latest one just two days ago haha
5:37 You didn't mention one problem with the shot directly following this which I felt was unnecessarily cheapened by poor coordination between background art and foreground action. Kiki unleashes the bolt right in the center of the image we see, except that... it's just an empty wall there: the dark passage where the monster supposedly lurks is further to the right, and it would've been more logical to shoot there and not have the bolt mysteriously disappear into the wall. The asymmetric composition is more aesthetically pleasing, so I can understand why the passage wasn't in the center of the image, but then the action should follow that direction instead of doing its own thing. Granted, the respective panel (framed from a different angle) isn't particularly well-composed in the manga, either, but it would be good to highlight how good intentions don't necessarily lead to good results. 5:53 Surprised you didn't mention the reverse joke with Laios's face becoming a round-eyed caricature of itself after he's pulled up. :D Thanks for the breakdown! Please don't report me to the IRS.
Ok, but now I desperately need a crossover between Dungeon Meshi and Dorohedoro... Thanks once again for pointing out all the cool little things that are easily missed :D
1:26 As someone who grew up in Germany hearing the name “Kaka” made me giggle too, just for a different reason. Y’see, in Germany, “Kaka” is the English equivalent to “Poopoo”…
i dont like the spoiler censor! 😊 it made the scene looks waaay worse 😊😊😊 ahhh, to be the designated tentacles guy in an animation crew... thank you for the breakdown as always, its fun to learn more about animation from you
So there was a little detail that.. really didn't work well on the spanish dub. You see Kaka sounds a lot like "caca" wich is a word that's used in certain places to say "poop" .. so yeah in spanish one of the twins is literally named poop
'it suddenly looks like youve created this weird, bizarro world where the Earth has been horrifically projected onto the surface of a sphere or something' # flatearthers lmao
Lot's to like in this episode, but I am concerned about the translation mistakes in both the dub and the subtitles in this episode. "that corpse we stumbled upon/we found on the way"(sub and dub, should be plural), "No, the boy is right" (dub, Tansu is actually agreeing with Senshi and not Laios) "Laios, you still have that creepy sword?" (sub, she does notice it's a new sword, she's concerned because it's a weird one again) As for the Tentacles (in the fan translation, they had translated that by "Tentaclus", and I think it was better), I hope we'll see more vibrant colors for different species... According to Laios it is part of the cnidarian, it's a terrestrial cousin of sea anemones, gorgonians, jelly fish, and coral. I am okay with this one being a dull brown because it was hiding among normal roots, but the next ones better be gorgeous looking!
@00:05 Frieren episode 22 was janky. Dungeon Meshi episode 9 was also poor quality. See Marcille and Namari standoff, the faces aren't consistent throughout this episode. Even in static episodes I can forgive cutting corners if they can just draw the faces how they are supposed to look in the manga. This episode in particular failed at this. @03:35 No, they did the side shot because it was much cheaper to make. Also the grooves the undine leaves arent really being shown as in manga, and Kaka and Kiki's faces looked pretty wonky in most shots.
Also probably why he wasn't mega phased at the fire trap going off near him
it also shows how powerful the undine is, if to be defeated it requires the pot to be hot enough that even dwarves get burned by the heat!
8:50 I love how Namari says that the stew is "so rich" after tasting it and then the shot cuts back to the stew with *richer* colors
Such clever wordplay!
It also went from a more realistic representation of how a person you see the food to a more glamorized shot of it.
being a dunmeshi fan feels like being spoiled, not only do we get a weekly anime episode but we also get a weekly breakdown!!! thank you for making these theyre always so fun and full of interesting insights :]
Namari being a deep voiced woman makes me so happy
dwarves, men or women, not having deep voices feels wrong somehow
Dwarves have always been a very masculine race.
Thought she sounded like a dude when I first watched the dub. Guess that explains why
ohh, I didn’t notice Namari’s change in expression when looking at Marcille or realize that there were reflections in the undine this ep! Thanks for pointing that out - and the warped drawing of Kiki for the camera effect was really cool!
There is nothing like someone who has an eye for animation pointing this kind of stuff out to help make you appreciate it.
It appears as if they intentionally saved the water effects and reflections for this episode, which leads me to believe the team is working with the bigger picture in mind rather the episode per episode basis some studios end up working on. I can't believe we're so close to mid season, looking forward to the next episode break down ✌🏼

That super detailed senshi shot reminds me of in Spongebob or Flapjack when it goes hyper-realistic for no apparent reason
The best outfits are on the way next ep 🤤🐸
I can't wait
Omg yes!
actually so excited
YES YES YES YES 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸
Yeahhhh🐸🐸🐸

Senshi’s beard in the closeup shot reminds me of how animal fur/feathers are textured/shaded in heraldry lol
the canary will f*** the internet
Ooooh yeah. That one's going to be interesting.
can't wait to see the black dress adapted
....and the internet will f*** them back.....

I loved the shot of Namari charging at the undine.
I missed the detail of her perception changing with the stew though.

Another amazing analysis video with great humor! Thank you for making these every week!

Yeah Damien Haas has consistently done an amazing job with Laios!
Danger Noodle damn near brought tears to my eyes
I didn't catch the shift and its significance in how they portrayed the bowl of soup differently for Namari. Always learn something from these 😁
I really love your videos because you really explain how animation works
Imagine being reserved to being the tentacle guy...
I just bit bummed out that some of Mr. Tansu's dialog removed from the anime but oh, well.
i look forward to these every week! thank you

“Just wait till these fuckers show up”
LMAO
I love watching these for so many and details I didn't noice
Loooove this series, and watching your videos is the perfect dessert 🍰

Your vids are Soo important!!!
I didn't noticed the water reflection part
Just came from Ep.8 and am very surprised to see this episode come out 2 mins after panning to the channel. Great video.
I was literally watching ur other vids when this came out. love your stuff dude, keep up the good work👍
Great video!
Thanks!
Yes Swamp Jawn, in the shot with Keke, it really is too bad they didn't use the FEET.
*sniff*
Ok, but now I desperately need a crossover between Dungeon Meshi and Dorohedoro...
Thanks once again for pointing out all the cool little things that are easily missed :D
OHHHH, I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR DOROHEDORO S2 COVERAGE
Jawn comin in with the delicious meal as always
Nah, that meat shield scene was cold and brutal as hell XD
Yay its posted! I started reading ahead in the manga a bit so i can compare them! Love the breakdown!
Thank you once again mister armadillo man~!
1:26
As someone who grew up in Germany hearing the name “Kaka” made me giggle too, just for a different reason.
Y’see, in Germany, “Kaka” is the English equivalent to “Poopoo”…
Delightful as always.
i dont like the spoiler censor! 😊 it made the scene looks waaay worse 😊😊😊
ahhh, to be the designated tentacles guy in an animation crew...
thank you for the breakdown as always, its fun to learn more about animation from you
Omg I gotta catch up on my Dorohedoro manga and delicious in dungeon now hype
For the algorithm
Namari's VA is married to Little Kuribo
whaaa
Okay the most important question is... Did we get any new Senshi pantyshots?
When's the next time we get Senshi pantyshots I need them to survive you don't understand
I will also take him taking his helmet off, onegaishimashu
So there was a little detail that.. really didn't work well on the spanish dub. You see
Kaka sounds a lot like "caca" wich is a word that's used in certain places to say "poop" .. so yeah in spanish one of the twins is literally named poop
i feel like it was a little weird this episode was only one manga chapter instead of 2 like the other episodes have been
Two chapters: 19 and 20.
In the manga version, the rich old gnome looks suspiciously similar to George Soros
'it suddenly looks like youve created this weird, bizarro world where the Earth has been horrifically projected onto the surface of a sphere or something'
# flatearthers lmao
Lot's to like in this episode, but I am concerned about the translation mistakes in both the dub and the subtitles in this episode.

isn't casey mongillo (en chilchuck) enby as well? love to see it!
@00:05 Frieren episode 22 was janky. Dungeon Meshi episode 9 was also poor quality. See Marcille and Namari standoff, the faces aren't consistent throughout this episode. Watch the spanish dub
5:49 bruh please no, thats so traumatic, He's clearly Fed up heh
What is going on in this frame? Is it serious or just for comedic effect?
