I took my R&R in Bangkok in ‘69. I ran out of money but I had enough to have a GREAT time. Chu Lai 68-69 1st MAW MAG 12.
I was on R&R in Bangkok for a week in January 1970 n again in June of 1970. I had a very very great time n the Thai people were very respectful. I wish I could go back but at almost 72 it probably will never happen but the memories still remain as if it was yesterday
Nice, glad we have our memories. Ive been many times but I avoid BKK as its too damn busy. Better up north
@@David-og7di how about Pattaya or Hua Hin area
@@billcowan6070 hi bill....too many tourists and the usual nonsense that comes with them. I like motorcycles and village life so the northern and eastern regions give me that in spades. Best from NZ
@@David-og7di I follow an American on you tube who lives with Thai wife n family they live up in That Phanom n that region seems very nice
My dad was in the USAF based out of Phan Rang in 69-70 and had a choice of Thailand, Sydney or Hawaii for R&R. He chose Sydney and met my mom there who was working at the Texas Tavern. They got married and had me in 1975.
I'm on here trying to see what he missed. Want to see what was going on there in Thailand during late 69 and early 1970. Thanks for posting this vid.
Got to show this to a retired MP buddy. He was here in the '60s. I didn't get to Bangkok until 1973. Hardly looked any different and sure was better than RVN! :)
My grandpa was there! He told me “When I go on the plane (sorry he’s part deaf so it’s hard to interpret this) the sun follow me the whole time, when I get to bangkok I just drive, drive around.” I can’t really remember much in detail because i’m bad at sign language and reading lips
Man my home city has grown so much from the old days
excellent clip and music!!
Damn I remember the Florida Hotel, Manhattan Hotel, Chao Pryaya Hotel . All JUSMAG hotels , pizza for a quarter
A lot of Rest and Temples shown but very little Recreation featured.
Bet there are Vets out there who are happy about that.
Lol. 😂. I am retired US Air Force with 9 years in the Pacific Theater. I get what you are saying. I was thinking 🤔 the same thing too.
Looks like the nana hotel hasn't changed but everything else has. Bangkok itself doesn't look that different in this video from what it did in the late 1980s I think it was from about 2000 onwards that it really began to change and loose its charm
ziggerzee “loose its charm”, you mean in becoming more independent and developed? Im sure Thailand is better without “its charm” if you mean charm by having an american base with farang boys buying away thai women with your bloodlust money.
um in 2010-2013 you could rent at rajah apartment 9000 baht monthly today its ruined by bar complexes there is no rajah anymore a big middle finger for people who wanna rent an apartment in nana
The NANA hotel is a all time favorite and is still there awsome. I haven't heard the nana hotel in a long time. SOI COWBOY AND PAT PONG. GOOD TIMES AND HOT THAI BABES. PO YING SOI MAC.
@@Voltaire8559 Now your women are bought by men from all over the world. Thank your economic ministry circa 1975 for that
@@David-og7di just the same thing happened to your country’s women were bought by men from all over world by money 💰 for sexual services 😂😂😂 bitch .
I was in Bangkok about this time 50 years ago in 1967. I've always wanted to go back.
Foxrrob
Me too I Loved Thailand and the Thai ppl IT and its ppl are the Most Beautiful in SEA
I was stationed in Bangkok and Udorn Thani 1966
72 yrs young now
were Thai heaven and rhapsody clubs on petchaburi road?
go go go and get your ass up and go. Life is finite
@@MrHesky yes the thai heaven was at least. i dont remember the rhapsody, there were dozens of bar all along petchburi road those days. we came out of the thai heaven one night and there was a gun fight going on right before our eyes
Bangkok looks like a big village back then and not the metropolis it has become today...
Was stationed there in Bangkok 1970-72. Thai Heaven, Rhapsody Bar, Rajah Hotel. Really brings back memories.
tlpendar that's the same time my dad was there. Did you happen to know Gerald Langley
I was there (on R&R from Diego Garcia) a couple of times in 1972. I also remember the Rhapsody Bar. The hotel I stayed at was called something like The Chao Pyia. Some of the songs I remember being played by the "house band" are still favorites of mine - - e.g. Them Changes, Witch Queen of New Orleans.
@@langley2931 Sorry, Memory fails me. Do you know what rank he was at the time?
i was stationed in bangkok from late 66 to mid 68. so i remember the thai heaven next door to the california bar on petchburi road. great times while the vietnam war was raging
Hi Military Video - I'm trying to get in touch about licensing for a documentary but the website seems to the down and my email bounced back - could you please let me know if/when you're back online?
This is amazing
Nice video...... but these are not the scenes I remember most from my R & R in 1970.
As a Cambodian-American, I envy the Thais so much. While Cambodia and Vietnam was being raped by layers of carpet-bombing, steel rain caused by the endless struggle of communism, Thailand was just sitting back in paradise.
Sadeth Cheng
Thats bcuz Thailand was Paradise then

Communism is a big trouble on earth, as islam...we have many problems now with these stupid peoples in France, communist leader only wants to bring chaos to take away the power, in fact, it does not care about the people. It will be worst if they took power and will drive blind people more stupid and violent.
in 1960s...cambodia was mostly...peaceful..
That's because the Thai's were smart, America invested millions in into Thailands infrastructure, highways, schools, and hospitals. They avoid the WW11 by pretending to lose a declaration of war on Japanese. The US R and R program set the basis of early tourism up , which boomed later in the '80s and '90s
That's because Thailand is the only south east Asian country to not have a western power occupy them.
The link to purchase isn't working- is there a new one?
goodness. The NANA hotel. My first visit was 2004
Believe me.....
As one of those GIs on R&R in Bangkok in 1970, I wasn't interested in seeing the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, or the Bangkok Zoo.
I was interested in more esoteric sights.....
I wasn't alone.
I don't think the black and white shots are actually from Bangkok...
nice to go to the Kock or hong kong or manila and get some slice.

Been there in 1970, no handcuffs though.
Went to Thai Heaven though! Good times.
I stayed at the Olympia hotel in 1970 for a week. ..than back to chu-lai vietnam.
what was the attitude of the girls that worked in the bars like back then?
Mr X
"Me Fucky you all night long"
The fastest way for an uneducated and poor girl to make money. The girl from esarn who want to relief their parents burden.
That is very true and very sad.
CHOG DI CAP.
I always enjoyed the Thai dancers.
Was there in 1969-1970 sans handcuffs

Did US forces Vietnam era R’nR start the whole ladyboy phenomenon?

RIP vietkong.
