As an old Thai man, very nice to see this video. I missed some parts of old-time Bangkok, but very happy to live in the modern city. Time is flying and many new adventures are waiting for us.

ผมเกิด 1982 เห็นแล้วคิดถึงช่วงเวลาเด็กๆมาก สมัยก่อนนั่งแท็กซี่ยังต้องต่อรองราคากันอยู่เลย เทศกาลที่เป็นอะไรที่สนุกมาก ลอยกระทง วันสงกรานต์ วันปีใหม่ วันเด็ก และวันอื่นอีกมากมาย เที่ยวแบบบ้านๆ งานวัดมีหนังกลางแปลงนอนดูกันกระดาษหนังสือพิมพ์หรือไม่ก็เสื่อผืน สมัยนี้สะดวกสบายขึ้นเจริญขึ้นก็จริง แต่ชีวิตไม่ค่อนสนุกเหมือนเมื่อก่อนตอนเด็กๆ คิดถึงวัยเด็กมากครับ พ่อแม่ปู่ย่าตายายลุงป้าน้าอาพี่น้องอยู่กันครบ ตอนนี้ทุกอย่างเปลื่ยนไปหมด.
สมัยนี้ก็ยังต่อรองอยู่ครับ ไปสยามราคาเหมาหัวละ 500
จริงครับ ผมเเม้จะเกิด ยุค 2000 เเต่ยังมีความเป็นบ้านๆอยู่ พ่อกับเเม่ผมอยู่ กรุงเทพ ส่วนผมอยู่นครปฐม เป้นช่วงเวลาที่สนุกมากเลยครับพอมาตอนนี้เจริญมากสะดวกสบายเเต่ไม่ค่อยสนุก เหมือนเเต่ก่อน
นั่งรถเมย์แดงน่าจะหายคิดถึงครับ
ทรงคุณค่ามาก ประเทศเราไม่ค่อยมีคนเห็นความสำคัญของภาพ วีดีโอ หรือสถิติต่างๆ มากนัก ต่างจากประเทศทางตะวันตก ที่ให้ความสำคัญกับ record ต่างๆ จัดเอาไว้อย่างเป็นระบบ ชอบมากกับการที่เด็กๆ ไปดูผลการสอบ Entrace ตอนเช้า
Bangkok is a 'timeless' city. The only changes are to updated automobiles and fashions. I love this city so much that I retired here.

Really? I think it has changed a lot in all kinds of ways. Certain parts are unrecognizable between then and now, and not for the better IMHO
I live in Suphanburi but I visit BKK 2 or 3 times a month... I like to live at quiet places, sometimes it can get too quiet though.

ตัวผมอายุ 21 แต่ชอบเสพกลิ่นอายของยุค 80-90 รู้สึกว่าสนใจการใช้ชีวิตเสื้อผ้า ณ ตอนนั้นมากกว่าตอนนี้ยังไงไม่รู้ครับฮ่าๆๆทุกอย่างสมบูรณ์ลงตัวหมดเลย....
ถ้าน้องเกิดทันน้องจะรู้ว่าช่วงนั้นมันดีประเมินค่าไม่ได้เลย ไม่มีมือถือ ดูทีวีแค่4-5ช่องไม่มีอินเตอร์เน็ต ไม่มีซีดีแต่ก็ไม่เคยเบื่อชีวอตสมัยก่อนมีอะไรให้ทำมากกว่าจดจ่ออยู่กับอินเตอร์เน็ต ซีรีย์
ในฐานะคนรุ่นใหม่ ชอบบรรยากาศเก่าๆแบบนี้มากค่ะ รู้สึกว่าน่าอยู่กว่ายุคปัจจุบันอีก ขอบคุณสำหรับคลิปวิดีโอสวยๆแบบนี้นะคะ

As someone who is travelling around Thailand now, I loved this! Reminds me of what I thought about Bangkok back when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. One night in Bangkok indeed!
Beautiful video of the city I loved so much. Not perfect; being badly polluted, busy and hot but when it's beautiful, it's beauty just shines. Before all the development that took place later on and gave us sky trains criss-crossing the city, you could, unless you wanted to spend a lot of money, take those rattling buses across town or snake down the river or Khlongs in one of those express boats. Thanks a lot for posting this. I see videos of Bangkok all the time but it is never quite the place I remember. So nice to see the city I knew.
I fairly recently found out just how huge this place is, is it bigger than Tokyo by chance? Or New York? Trying to find a comparison 🤔

I visit Bangkok very often. This city has come such a long way from its early days. The best times are still ahead for BKK and Thailand in general.
I'm not so sure about that. The 80s looked much more free, nicer, more stress-free than today. The future of Thailand seems uncertain and potentially quite scary.
I hardly saw any homeless until recently. They’re all over sukhumwit now ..
Fascinating, my first trip to Bangkok was in 1995 and in 2019 I moved to the city, after living in London for 40 plus years. Would not live anywhere else now.

I was in Bangkok for the first time in 1986 and I can still remember it well; it was exactly like in the video.
I visited BKK for the first time in '81 as a young man. I returned in '82 and '84. The traffic was terrible even back then, and it was heavily polluted as you nicely show in the vid at 1:53. There was no Skytrain, underground or express roads that you could use as a shortcut to avoid the gridlock. I remember trying to get to the international airport (Don Meuang) once by local bus. It took several hours. Every time this bus stopped at traffic lights, the engine conked out. The driver had to jump off and reboot it. It's easy to romanticize things from the past and assume they were better; but in the case of BKK you would have to go back a lot further than the 80s to find when the city was actually better than it is now, and it's still quite oppressive in parts.
In late '80s I was a teenager. I live in Chonburi. every time when I went to BKK I notice, from Bangna-Trad road, dark frog cover the city.
In 1992 I was studying in down town BKK and I hate livine there, the traffic, the pollution, too many people, people are cold, ect.

My first visits to BKK were in the 1970s. I recall the heat, pollution, noise and some of the worst traffic ever seen (and I include Cairo and Mumbai here). With no SkyTrain at that time most ordinary people used buses and these had no air conditioning, were badly maintained and belched out black exhaust.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Yep, Alex, BKK was definitely up there with Cairo and Mumbai. You can throw in Djakarta and Calcutta (Kolkata) as well.

I love the old Bangkok, it is so nostalgic, when most of our parents on that time, they was fall in love. The city that most of rural people was dream to come.
Big thanx for the memories!!! This time I liked Bangkok and Thailand more than today.More exotic. No super large shopping malls, no Mc. Donalds, Burger Kings and such... And I married my thai wife in 1980 and we are still together.

I came here on a quick visit on-route to Singapore in 1973. I remember the road from Don Muang Airport to town was quite easy to travel. I came back again in 1982 and this is much like what I seem to remember!

Standing ovation all the way from Chicago! I absolutely love everything about this classic footage with the exception of the plumes of smoke from the leaded gasoline used back in the day. My first trip was back in 1993 but my father made trips as early as 1982. Awesome video!
We are in Bangkok right now on a medical mission but precisely forty years ago I was here on a Tour Of Asia - Singapore Bangkok Hong Kong. Yes, Bangkok has changed massively but the people are still wonderful.

I was a teenager in Bangkok in the 1980s. I wish I had a video camera and had taken mundane videos of what the city looked like back then. It has completely transformed and reinvented itself in the last 35-45 years. Without videos like this all I have are ancient memories.
The 80's was a good time for every country to be lively
yes, when there is no internet, everyone waiting in front of tv to watch favourite tv shows, when everyone read books, communicate thru mail, and queue at phone booth. I love the feeling of that. Now, with internet it is feel different, no thrill.

Less competition and room for normal people to live well…
They still don't allow the gogo bar girls to use phone while working at most of the places. Makes for better customer service for sure.

Thanks so much for such a wonderful video! I first flew from the US to Bangkok in 1987 and fell deeply in love with the city at once. My Second Home is upcountry in Chiang Mai but I AM looking forward to seeing Krung Thep again when I get back to Suvarnabhumi International later on this year from here in the US and I'll DEFINITELY be spending time in The Big Durian once again with Sanuk-Galor! :-)

Wow this is a great compilation of footage! Krungthep or Bangkok! My parents are from Fiji and came in 85’ for work and stayed for 31 years! Myself and my older sister were born there. Such an enchanting, chaotic and bustling city!

I remember in 1980, forced stop over on my way to India,, and 1983 to visite Thailand stayed 6 months, met my Thai wife Really good time, nostalgia of this time, now it's different I think the same everywhere ☮️🙏👍

I absolutely loved this. My father said Bangkae (where i lived today) in 198x-1990 There's only 2 lanes road (Or even dirt road) But there's so much changes nowaday. I loved your production and clip. I subbed.

I first came on Holiday in 1985 while I was working in London and after several more there holidays and venturing elsewhere I moved to Bangkok in December 1990 and worked there until September 2004. I retired to stay in Thailand in UK winters in 2015. The city has seen many improvements, although each has caused much disruption and air pollution. I still love the place.

Remembers me my first time in Thailand 1988, when i was 19years old. Bangkok has changed so much, unbelievable.
Amazing to see this footage. Bangkok has advanced at an incredible pace within the past few decades.
Travelled there in 1973 when I was a 13 year old kid and stayed at the Narai Hotel with family. Visited the floating market and huge temple. What an eye opening trip that was. Heat even then was oppressive.

Right at the start, the Sheraton Hotel on captain bush Lane, I must have stayed there 20 times over the years, so many great memories from when I was a child. My mum is from Bang Khae originally. Thank you for taking me down memory Lane!

Just visited Bangkok 2 weeks ago, gee how much it has changed since the 80s! New airports, BTS, MRT, really changed the city forever.
I wish I was there during the 80's, I married my wife in the states abd married her in 1990, in 2003 she finally got me to take time off from work and go see her home in Northeast Thailand. I fell in love with the country and its people, and now 30 years later spend most my time here.

Did not see one overweight person, especially children. Last time I was there in 2018, it was really sad to see so many kids that would be considered to be obese.
Still, I love Bangkok and and look forward to going back there again.

Mostly I remember the AC power cutting in and out, and the loud backup generator kicking in. The big central market building (I think its yellow now), and the waterfront river, also to catch the speed passenger ferries going up the Tonle Sap. I guess there was some quiet streets with old government buildings still there.

i remember the first time i. did stay at the narai hotel on silom road, the price for a taxi from silom to nonthaburi about 33 baht (1974), beautiful time, but also this period where i am living right now has its own lustre!

I was there in Dec 1982. Would be nice if the video was restored because it was a bright and colorful place. Traffic was bad; I spent 4 hours in front of what is now MBK sitting in my friend's car with the engine off. We got out, got food, used the bathroom in a small restaurant in Siam Square, talked to other people in the other cars. There were pay phones everywhere. Every bathroom was 2 baht. Girls had long hair (black only) and guy had short hair (ditto). Half the boats on the river were pepsi barges. The hi-soc (hot) places to shop were New World and Phantip (it was a high fashion place). Arawan (I think that's it at 2:45 on the right) was one of the better places to stay. Taxis and tuk-tuks were not metered and one negotiated the price for every ride. Phi-Phi only had 10 grass huts, and Phuket beaches were deserted.
Enjoy this city whenever possible. I love it.
