    I like Waldner because he doesn't play with anger he usually smile and play with fun he doesn't make his opponent nervous in such way

    Though they may not match up to the current top players given their age, I found this match more entertaining than most matches today. More character and fun, less robotic like play.

    Waldner won the 1997 world championships without losing one set. 21-0. The englishman Matthew Syed said: "that the worlds elit was Waldners slaves." :>

      If Waldner and Chuck Norris would enter the same building at the same time. It would explode because of to much awesomness.

      I also feared another pointless exhibition... it was fantastic to see some serious tt out of them :) Too bad Waldner missed at least 2 epic shots in this match ;)

    • @jimmybutler7589
      @jimmybutler7589 10 років тому +3

      I was told that they will play for real in the final rounds. Early rounds may be exhibition when it's against legends that are not in Table Tennis shape like Jiang Jialiang, Kurcharski, etc. Appelgren, Persson, Waldner, Saive are all in Table Tennis shape so they will play real matches against each other. Anyone else they bring in will probably not be in Table Tennis shape, although there may be an exception here or there depending on what city they go to.

  • @robertrowles5450
    @robertrowles5450 10 років тому +39

    You know what, he's still better at killing a ball than Boll or (on the forehand side) Ovcharov. That's why he could beat the Chinese, and why the Germans usually can't. European table tennis badly needs another Waldner. Even though he's pushing 50, the touch and tactical brain are still amazing. If he'd managed to beat Ma Lin in 99 (and he was so close), and won that tournament, there'd be no doubt in my mind he's the best ever. As it is I think you could make a case for various players: Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Wang Hao, Zhang Jike, limited to the ones I've seen. I just know, for sheer touch, I prefer watching him to any of them.

    Just watched an old Saive vs Waldner match from 1993 before this video and comparing the two is interesting. Waldner is always trying to stick close to the table which puts Saive on the backfoot constantly. In the old days Saive had the speed and agility to keep up, but with age it is clearly a more difficult style. Saive is in good shape this match but still it's not enough.
