on another note, i do wonder if they struggle with the modern units because its harder to get access to them. Most of the older trains have some in preservation so its easier to organise a recording session whereas most of the modern stock is still in revenue service. Not trying to fanboy here just being logical
This can't be the reason. A locomotive need it's own motor and not a motor from a multiple unit , otherwise there would be traction , final drive and traction power problems .

The reason I think the 86 borrows sounds from the 456 and 37 is cus they were built in the same era
