    ✎ He left Allerton High School in Leeds without any qualifications and decided to train as a chef. Aged 16, he went to London with "£7.36, a box of books and a bag of clothes", and began his classical training as a commis. In 1987, White opened Harvey's in Wandsworth Common, London, where he won his first Michelin star almost immediately. He later become chef-patron of The Restaurant Marco Pierre White in the dining room at the former Hyde Park Hotel, where he won the third Michelin star. By the age of 33, Marco Pierre White had become the first British chef to be awarded three Michelin stars. At 33 he was also the youngest chef to win three stars. During his early career in the kitchen, White regularly ejected patrons from his restaurants if he took offence at their comments. In September 2007, White was the Head Chef in ITV's Hell's Kitchen television series. In 1999 he retired and returned his Michelin stars. White has published several books, including an influential cookbook White Heat.

      I agree. But you have to understand where he's coming from.
      Great but not successful: Jesus Christ, Nikola Tesla, Chiang Kai-Chek, Pablo Picasso, that unknown soldier
      Successful but not great: Napoleon Bonaparte, Josef Stalin, Mao Zedong.
      You become great WHILE becoming successful. After becoming successful, it's called redemption.

    • @petrus4
      @petrus4 7 років тому +3

      Napoleon was a great man. I'd argue also that uncle Joe was as well, in his way. Becoming the political leader of the largest continent on the planet takes some doing. Tesla was also completely successful in terms of his knowledge and implementation of the science; the only reason why his later technology was not adopted was because the majority of humanity are less enlightened than he was.

    • @FoieGras
      @FoieGras 7 років тому +2

      Exactly. When one sees what kind of a guy the rest are, then one could argue the other way. Yeah, Tesla was successful due to knowledge, knowledge that was of virtuous nature. Edison was successful as well, but he was a businessman.
      You could argue that Genghis Khan was also a "great man" in that regard. Hell, it was the biggest Empire this world has seen. Compare that to Pres. Kennedy, who was assassinated for being a REAL leader, the difference is night and day.

      The secret is that they're judging you based on your merits AND honesty. Merits, a little (since that can only be done by your peers), but honesty, a LOT so that they know what comes out of your kitchen is good.

      Permit me to add a comment. MPW made the mistake of conflating his superb abilities in the kitchen with those of a professional judge/pundit whose equally superb ability to do what he does is based on what is eaten from the plate. There is a cut off point as soon as the dish leaves the kitchen. The two skill-sets are not symbiotic.

    The quote about success woke me up completely. Its only until now, that I realised the concept of success (at least currently) completely revolves around being ego-tistical. When you think of success, in the west, what do you think of? Money. Fame. MATERIAL. Things you can only see with your eyes.
    You can’t see greatness with your eyes, that is something that is far more special.

    In the interview where the first point was taken from, he says he worked for 20 years to fulfill his dream only to realise it wasn't what he wanted. He had worked to get 3 Michelin stars and then realised he would just have to be a robot, churning out however many identical meals every night, to keep them. He came to the realisation that what he really wanted to do was cook food that he wanted to eat.
    It was crazy because some kid in the audience was so focused on the stars that he asked the question of what he would need to do to get them, to which Marco answered, just cook what you want to eat.
    Of course it's easy to say you don't want something when you have it. But success could be measured in different ways. Some might take his example to strive after a label. Others might take his experience and say I'd rather do what I want to do than spend every hour of my life striving to win approval off of someone else.

    • @CooManTunes
      @CooManTunes 4 роки тому +2

      @Tom B Gordon is, 100% of the time, the first one to sling an insult. A leader doesn't insult. A leader inspires.

    • @Learned_Duvel
      @Learned_Duvel 3 роки тому

      @@CooManTunes running a kitchen, especially with today’s youth I actually understand the contrast in their forms. Marco was the teacher when the apprentice had discipline enough from home life to understand their role in the kitchen, and push to assure it is done 101% accurately. Modern children and even people into their early thirties are absolutely brainwashed so much so that they’re borderline retarded. I respect Marco much more because he is the most genuine person I’ve ever seen on a television, but Gordon also deserves respect. A lot of what you see is also dramatizations for the shows he’s PAID to do. That’s his TV persona.

    The extraordinary thing about this man is that he is such an accomplished communicator in the broadcasting media. He has always been candid about his background, one that was hardly conducive to greatness in the world of gastronomy. He has now embraced the broadcasting media with the same grit and determination. Evidently he is a high-functioning dyslexic. Gastronomy and the media aside, I know him to be flawed as a human being, the very same media having no hesitation in sensationalizing his very real foibles. He's wrong about Michelin inspectors being unfit to eat-in-judgement of his cooking. Being in possession of fewer practical (or any) skills in the kitchen is no bar to the high level of gastronomic punditry that Michelin inspectors have consistently delivered to its readership over decades. Would the late Bernard Levin have been any less of a great opera critic because he couldn't sing a note? Ditto Harry Carpenter, the late doyen of boxing commentators on TV, who couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, but reigned supreme in his punditry for almost four decades...

      Roger le phoque. Marco is indeed a man with feet of clay. I'd like to know the real reason/s he handed back his Michelin Stars. I suspect it was because he couldn't handle the pressure of maintaining them. You can lose them if you don't keep up the standard that won them in the first place. Ramsay has won 16 M Stars, and currently retains about 6. To be fair to Ramsay, some of the Stars were lost after he sold a restaurant which had won them. Since giving back his M Stars, Marco has tried to recover by inventing reasons why they're not that important, so as to justify why he no longer has any. And to create a new persona of an Oracle of the food industry. To that end he has developed a method of communicating that would win him an Academy Award. Jamie Oliver describes it as a sort of an elder mafia Don figure, with the associated vocal delivery. I have followed his story for many years, and have found that his story is often inconsistent, and not reflective of reality. While he maintains most of his chef skills, he makes his real income from using his new persona to dispense sage advice about life, living, food, and the meaning of the universe. You would be forgiven for suspecting that he seems full of shit ,much of the time.
