Learning English: Like Learning to Swim, Practice is Key
Last month, a good friend of mine invited me to dinner mainly to discuss how his child could improve in English. His daughter is about to enter the ninth grade, and while she excels in Chinese and math, her English scores lag behind. My friend was very concerned and asked me whether his child should take extra tutoring and if it would be effective.
The Key to Learning English: Practice More
I didn't rush to answer the question about tutoring right away. Instead, I shared my own experience. Learning English is much like learning to swim; the key lies in practicing frequently.
    My English Learning Experience
When I was a child, I attended a rural primary school. From grades one to three, I had no exposure to English at all. It was the early 1980s, and rural schools didn't offer English courses. In the third grade, my family moved to Shatoujiao in Shenzhen. Shatoujiao is very close to Hong Kong, so the education there was particularly rigorous, especially in English. Our English lessons were very strict, and we were required to memorize texts every Tuesday and Thursday. If we couldn’t recite them fluently, we had to stay behind and continue practicing.
When I first transferred, I didn't even know what ABC was, so I was left behind to recite texts almost every time. From third to sixth grade, I spent an extra two hours each week reading and memorizing texts compared to others. Although the immediate effects weren't noticeable in primary school, my performance improved significantly in junior high. My English teacher once told the class that although my reading wasn't fluent, my pronunciation and intonation were very accurate. This was due to the constant practice during those three to four years in primary school.
In junior high, my pronunciation and sense of language set me apart, and my English grades stood out. By the time I reached high school, my English scores were among the top in the class. In college, my English professors spoke to me almost exclusively in English. Later, my strong foundation in English helped me secure a job in a foreign enterprise.
How to Learn English Through Practice
Read More: Read English articles daily to expand your vocabulary and improve your language sense.
Listen More: Listen to English broadcasts and watch English videos to enhance your listening skills.
Write More: Write a daily English journal or practice essays to reinforce grammar and vocabulary.
Speak More: Find language partners or join English corners to practice speaking.
Systematic Learning: Use books or online courses to systematically learn grammar and vocabulary.
Leverage Technology: Use vocabulary apps (like Anki or Quizlet) to aid memory, and choose listening materials that match your level, gradually increasing the difficulty.
    Conclusion
The key to mastering English is frequent practice, much like learning to swim. Whether it’s reading, listening, writing, or speaking, the more time you spend practicing, the more noticeable your progress will be. Language learning requires patience and perseverance. As long as you practice regularly, your English skills will improve, and you can even surpass most of your peers. So, if you or your child struggle with English, don’t be discouraged. With effort and consistent practice, significant improvement is within reach.
