    that is the thing I think every tru computer guy can relate to at one point or another. You get your system perfect and like a day later you get bored and it's like " well, Im just gonna tweak this one setting here annnnnnnnnd it's broken". Followed by of course the inital shock followed by half hr of pnic like wtf did I just brake..followed by hrs of pulling out hair, thinking working and testing all your ideas and what usually ends in that amazing feeling when you finally solve the problem and you go into a victory high followed by crash from all the stress and excitment followed by a nap. Frankly that is how I learned everything I know since my first pc but everytime i fuck something up I learn something new by fixing it. You can read it in a book or watch it on a screen but it will never stick in your head like when it crashed in front of you and you and all you had to do to fix it.

      +Jonathan Bombola because the vm is going to capture each gpu as the display port for each gamer. it would be possible to say run 14 monitors with the setup or even 21 monitors. but there will only be 7 distinct machines. you can also vm 28 machines, but beyond the 7, they will have to use remote access and not directly run from the plug.

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 8 років тому +9

      What anxiety? What blue screens? If you do it properly (stress test, stress test, stress test), the system will be perfectly stable.
      When I was done with my overclock, I tested the system by running Prime95 for 3 days and LINPACK for 4 days (24/7) in the middle of the summer with 30 °C ambient temperatures (as bad as it gets where I live). If my system survived this without generating a single error, it will survive anything (and so far it has; not a single blue screen).

    • @ParadoxdesignsOrg
      @ParadoxdesignsOrg 8 років тому +1

      ***** you can stress test all you want but look back at bit-mining machines and their hardware. a lot of that stuff runs like crap now. yes it worked, but overclocking sure shortened its life time.

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 8 років тому

      paradoxdesigns That's a bit different. Those machines were overclocked _and_ ran under full load the whole time (also, the problems are mainly with the GPUs, which is quite understandable because consumer GPUs are not designed with 24/7 operation in mind). Yes, overclocking shortens the lifespan of components but I don't care if my CPU dies after 20 years instead of 40 because I'll have upgraded after 10 anyway.

      @theskeletonboi 8 років тому

      I know that's a joke, but this computer is too "weak" for Bitcoin mining. The maximum it could do would run around 2 GH/s. Bitcoin miners like myself now use specialized processors called "ASIC", which are so optimized, they can mine at around 1.5 TH/s using only about 500 Watts of power. :P

    • @frizzykid100
      @frizzykid100 8 років тому

      +Nermain Merl its not worth it as an investment now adays. You are basically putting a few thousand dollars towards a bitcoin miner and you may get a few dollars over the lifespan of the machine but it costs so much to run in terms of electricity. Its really not worth it

    • @theskeletonboi
      @theskeletonboi 8 років тому

      frizzykid100 What are you talking about? New miners are released every month. The new Antminer S9 mines at 14 TH/s, and only uses 1.375 kw.
      If electricity costs .10 cents per kilowatt, that is a total profit of 1 BTC ($608) ( every 2 months.)
      The miner only costs 4 BTC, it pays itself off quickly, and the reality is you can buy many more miners to increase the profit and have the miners pay themselves off more easily.
      This makes a huge amount of profit, there is a reason Bitcoin is not dead, that is because Bitcoin mining is always profitable because of the way the algorithm was designed it will increase in price naturally to offset Bitcoin block sizing, and Miner difficulty.
      You have no idea what you are talking about, lol.

    Build a computer closet around a window, install a window air
    conditioner, insulate the closet, also sound proof (optional), run
    exhaust port, with fan(s) to another window. You might say it didn't
    work when you put a computer in a refrigerator. The window a c will put
    more Btu's in than a refrigerator could. For protection put a
    thermistor on the power-strip in case the AC unit ever fails. I say
    build a computer closet, one, you won't freeze everybody in the room;
    two, ac unit shouldn't run much for cooling off a small insulated
    space.

    I tried to use PCIe passthrough with a 1080 Ti to see if the direct VM to hardware connection would give better results than the crappy VirtualBox "Enable 3D Acceleration" performance which just pretends to be a GPU and then passes DirectX/OpenGL calls to the real GPU and back, requiring a VM exit and tons of cache misses each time a shader is run. The driver fails to work in the VM (Error 43 in Device Manager), and Google told me to just change the hypervisor settings, setting hv_vendor_id to "1234567890ab" and setting the CPUID IsVM bit to zero. It works, and I get about half native performance. With CPU core pinning to the VM, the host scheduler will leave it alone and the CPU will actually turbo, and then I get pretty much native performance. This is awesome since if you already have a Linux server with spare cores and RAM for other uses (media streaming, etc.), you can basically stick a graphics card in it and run every Windows game at native speed.
    If find the driver hack really weird, because the hv_vendor_id just changes what the CPUID instruction returns, it is already set properly by default if not overridden by settings. In fact, I tried other values, and everything works *except* "KVMKVMKVM", so it's not a bug in the hypervisor failing to set a CPUID leaf, it's the Nvidia driver probably looking to take advantage of paravirtualization on VMs, and somebody at Nvidia messed up a compatibility check in the driver code. Instead of using hypervisor-optimized syscalls if the hypervisor complies with KVM's interface, it works only if the hypervisor reports *invalid* information when trapping the CPUID instruction, which is the opposite of how virtual machine-aware drivers should behave. At least you can work around the bug by editing the XML config file, but that's a pretty crappy coding job from a big name brand like Nvidia. If the driver can use the KVM paravirtualization interface (which would be strange since it has direct access to the PCIe interface and doesn't need to talk to the hypervisor at all), why does it crash when the VM is configured properly and work flawlessly when KVM returns random and useless CPU info to the guest OS?
    The only other things I can think of that would otherwise work properly in a VM but still explicitly checks for a VM and throws an error would be viruses (to avoid analysis and heuristic detection, for example encrypting your files when running on bare metal and behaving as a Pac-Man game when in an antivirus sandbox), and other hypervisors (the hardware virtualization instructions are trapped but usually not handled by hypervisors, so VirtualBox for example checks if you're already in a VM and falls back to software emulation). A GPU driver should not need to know whether it's in a VM or on bare metal. Is that address range mapped to the PCIe interface? Is the device ID at the other end a Nvidia GPU? If I send polygons and a shader to it, does it spit out pixels? If yes, the driver just waits for shaders and textures, compiles the shaders, writes the textures to VRAM and gives orders to the GPU. It doesn't matter whether the OS is running in a VM or on physical hardware. The PCIe link is physical, and so is the monitor plugged into the back of the card. That's the whole point of IOMMU: expand virtual addressing to I/O devices rather than just RAM, so VMs and user processes can talk to hardware directly without the OS or hypervisor as middleman.
    Aside from bad GPU drivers, I also noticed that it's impossible to play CS:GO without also hiding virtualization (in that case, I need to set the CPUID vendor ID leaf to something like "GenuineIntel"). Guest paravirtualization can stay enabled only if the interface used is Hyper-V. Installing other drivers that don't come with Windows, such as VirtualBox Guest Additions, will most likely cause you to be blocked from connecting to any server (what's the point of playing CS:GO solo?) In that case, it's actually not a bug but a feature of Valve Anti-Cheat. Apparently they don't like virtual machines. What looks to the GPU driver like a real GPU might just be a chunk of RAM, which the hypervisor could theoretically flush to somewhere not accessible to the VM, and then a page fault would occur each time a frame is sent to the GPU. The hypervisor then silently replaces the game's shaders with a wall hack. Similarly, the hypervisor could cause page fetches to fault on RAM used to store enemy positions on the map, and of course the hypervisor can also control the mouse and keyboard. You'd be able to run aimbots, auto-triggers and other cheats in the host's memory, so even if Valve Anti-Cheat somehow managed to get control of the entire Windows kernel, the hack would be undetectable, because no unsigned drivers have been loaded and no DLLs have been modified or connected to a debugger. It would be impossible to prove. The GPU driver's job is not to take screenshots to see if you are using wall hacks, and even then, the hypervisor could always use the correct shader to generate a "clean" screenshot right before writing it to RAM where the guest's GPU driver thinks is a direct PCI Express connection to the GPU. It doesn't matter what game you play or even if the hack is known by Valve and they have the source code in front of them, and they can push an update to detect the exploit signature. It doesn't matter if Windows defender thinks your aimbot is malware. From the game's point of view, the machine is completely clean. It would be the perfect cheat engine.

    Tips incase you revisit overclocking this machine again...
    Not sure if this will apply directly to your exact setup but I ran into failing to post with my asus ws board like this.. it's touchy.. very touchy. Pushing it harder made it more stable, though. Really have to fine-tune before committing to saving settings, else risk failure to post. You should be able to push that cpu a lot higher and get better luck posting if you set bus between 123.7 and 124.9. The chip doesn't usually like anything else. Also, you should manually set your multipliers on each core and make sure the system agent and cpu voltages are not being starved. You can likely OC the ram a bit, too. Don't trust the profiles.. set the timings and voltages manually regardless of overclocking or not and run your benchmarks to make sure it's stable.

    One thing you can do for this kinda thing is to run a script on each computer to run at a specified time in the near future. I'm not sure how scriptable the benchmark tools are though so it might have to be a macro or something.

    Instead of using 7 people to do simultaneous testing you could use virtual km stuff like synergy. I don't think synergy has mouse duplication ability but there must be something out there that does.

    Linus, I would love to see this system tested with a Nvidia Tesla or other GRID GPU. They are built specifically for virtual machines and I would like to see how these new GRID cards stack up against a PCI passthrough setup.

    Thank you! I learned the following from this video:
    1) I should never buy a $30,000 computer!!!!
    2) If I was ever stupid enough to break rule 1 I should never ever try to overclock it by myself!!
    3) I now remember why I left the Microsoft Word behind (sort of) when I retired and have only dealt with Apple ever since.
    I might have a different view if I was 25 and/or had a ton of extra cash, but I watch videos about muscle cars I will never own too.
    That means I really enjoyed this video.

    POST PRODUCTION FEEDBACK:
    Hey LinusTech Tipps Crew! I just started watching your Channel a couple of weeks ago. Your quality improved so much and I think you are one the best examples youtube enterpreneur ship. As well as many of you might be, I'm an audiophile, and I'm annoyed by one Thing relly bad: The Intro with the Computer and the Logo. Not the Intro itself is my concern but its alwys TOO LOUD. If listening at my comfort volume and this thing starts I always start twitching in my chair. It's annonyingly loud and high pitch and everything. Just put it below talking voice level. Not significantly above. It won't loose what ever it got to it, but is gonna be much more comforting.
    I REALLY LIKE YOUR CHANNEL!
    LOVE & GRATITUDE, peace Horst
