    i've never quite felt the appeal of BPs compared to a lot of other herpers, I always heard them characterized as pet rocks, and finicky eaters. I really got into Rosy Boas due to the variety of wild type localities, and them being an indigenous species here in California. So I was explaining to my friend how the rosy community is diff than BP keepers in that while some morphs exist, the locality specific rosies are way more common. Because her boyfriend is a pot grower i explained in the terms that rosy localities are more like the regional landrace strains like durban poison or a thai haze, and the ball python is more like your designer weed. We were looking at some BP morphs and I started to appreciate the artistry of it, its no less or 'unnatural' than strains with names like Alien OG and DosiFi43. I'll stick with my locality rosies for now because BPs seem like an expensive habit, but the genetics aspect of it is really wicked.

  • @En1gmatic1
    @En1gmatic1 3 роки тому

    The morph game is kinda confusing. So is stranger an actual stand alone co-dom morph? Or is it born out of a combo of clown/other gene's that made "strange looking babies" that happens to just do unexpected stuff to other mixes? Is there an actual single gene stranger that has a unique look like an ultramel or banana or pied. Or are alot of these NEWER genes just traits being passed on from previous mixes.

    • @sealink129
      @sealink129 2 роки тому

      I can’t say I know the answer, but I have an idea. So, these morphs wouldn’t occur naturally in the wild. And when a morph happens for the first time, it’s due to a random mutation that happens in the genes of the babies. What probably happened is it was created out of a combo of the clown and other genes (but not necessarily as a result of those exact morphs being combined) in the parent snakes (since several babies exhibit the stranger morph) but once it’s bred down a line, it will act as it’s own independent morph. From what we’ve seen in this video, it’s definitely dominant in some fashion. So far, there isn’t a super of the stranger gene, but it shows an effect on dominant morphs while being present itself as well. So perhaps it’s a co-dom/incomplete dominance morph?

    What is the reason that certain genes make males more expensive than females?

    • @lindafolston8631
      @lindafolston8631 3 роки тому

      Males can breed as early as 6 months old & for a new morph that is dominant or co-com, they will reproduce themselves in the first generation. So an investor with a male could theoretically be producing Strangers as early as 8 months. Females will take 2-3 years to mature and breed. Investors in the morph have spent a lot of money to buy into this project themselves, and need to re-coup their investment. There may be other factors as well. For example, in Bananas there are Male and Female makers which affect pricing.

    Am I the only one that is severely disappointed with the fact that these snakes are kept in opaque containers, so that they are baisically kept in perpetual darkness? And the enclosures seem awfully small to me, especially for the bigger snakes. I would have thought that those sizes would be appropriate for temporary travel containers, not full time living quarters/ habitats.
    However, I will say that at least the containers are clean and likely have heat sources.

    • @lindafolston8631
      @lindafolston8631 3 роки тому +1

      These are nocturnal snakes that live in termite mounds & tunnels in Africa. They do prefer tight quarters & may go off feed when sized up to larger bins. Animals are sized up from small to quite large bins as they age, but if they go off feed will often be sized into smaller quarters again until they are feeding consistently again Larger snakes are in larger bins. Breeder facilities are on automated lighting cycles to provide day and night photo periods which are adjusted for the seasons. The tops of these bins are panels perforated with holes for light and air circulation. Breeder facilities are temperature and humidity controlled as well. These are valuable animals given the best of care and kept as clean as possible.

    • @melissajarvis4829
      @melissajarvis4829 3 роки тому

      @@lindafolston8631 Thank you for sharing that information! I really should have researched the species before commenting. I know that this style bin is acceptable in the reptile breeding world, but couldn't understand why. (Another channel I watch uses translucent bins. They're also bigger per snake size- but again, different species. Because of them, I know that the tops of the bins are perforated for airflow, and that the heating elements are also there, somewhat concealed.) But, it is also obvious that those tops, combined with opaque tubs, stacked above each other, really don't let in much light, and even that is indirect. Makes much more sense now, knowing about this species's natural choice of habitat (tunnels) and the info about them going off their feed, if given too much room!
      Again, thanks for sharing, especially so patiently, with a newbie!
