As you went through the small presses and described Between The Lines I realised they were probably the publisher of the book I am reading: When the Pine Needles Fall. And yes! They are. I was very affected by the "Mohawk Crisis" blockade in 1990. I worked for the railway then. CN quickly developed a new, temporary, commuter service to get people--who lived near the Mercier bridge on the south shore of Montreal--across the river and into Montreal. I empathized with the indigenous protesters' cause, but I was surrounded by those who did not support them. I'm loving this read!
Thank you for such a thorough video. As usual my TBR has expanded as a result. If I could make one book recommendation to you, it's I Hope This Finds You Well by Natalie Sue. It was my top book of last year. It just misses out on being long enough for the 25 letter prompt, but if you need extra motivation to read it, the main character's name is Jolene and the story is set in Calgary.
Thanks for the recommendation and your kind words. Two books I read this month had Jolene characters too. We must be taking over the world. I will check it out. 😊💙
I read What I Know About You as it was short listed for the Giller. I loved how the whole time it’s written in second person you don’t know who the narrator is until near the end. Chacour’s proseis beautiful and the story compelling. I’ve also read Pull of the Stars and can easily see it making the short listed as well. Thanks for the rundown on them all.
Great video as always .I have so many ideas now and I think the Canada Reads longlist will definitely fit sone of the prompts. I'm waiting for the shortlist, I've never had the desire to read all of the books 😂.
Thanks for including them. That’s great for our French speaking friends. I don’t know them. I included Véhicule press because they were the ones I knew who did both English and French. 😊💙
I love all the recognition for Independent Presses. On a totally random note, have you heard that Loghan Paylor (The Cure For Drowning) has been chosen to be on the Scotia Bank Giller Prize Jury. I'm so excited for them.
I don’t remember hearing about Radiant Press before. I went to their website and recognized a book that had previously caught my eye purely because of the title: Yellow Barks Spider.
I just finished Women Talking and not gonna lie I thought it was based in Canada based on a story in Bolivia 😆 oops! But it'll fulfil other prompts like you mentioned! I just read a book with a long title too, but it was 24 characters 🤪 For small presses I'm guessing quite a few french ones in Quebec will be, but I'm struggling to find that information haha I think I'll go and count them as independent!
I hope you found Women Talking a good read and yes, it fits other prompts. I think you’re right about French presses in Canada. Someone mentioned one in the comments. 😊💙
So far I've just been reading library holds and figuring out where they fit for prompts. I've done _The Annual Migration of Clouds_ by Premee Mohamed for red or white cover (though it could also be a prairie province book, as it's set at U of A), _The Singer's Gun_ by Emily St John Mandel for books by an 2SLGBTQIA author (she just got engaged to her girlfriend! It's very cute! I was wondering if it would also count as by a small press, but the version I read was republished by Vantage, so wouldn't count), and _Indigenous Relations_ by Bob Joseph & Cynthia F. Joseph for New-to-Me author (though of course it could be Indigenous Author or Non-fiction or red/white cover). At some point I'm going to have to either move things around, or start to hunt for books I haven't filled yet. First Second press is another great Canadian Indie, though they mostly do graphic novels. I love Arsenal, and would add that they're famous for queer content, and have racked up a pile of Lambda awards. The two books I'm reading right now are from the US and New Zealand, but I have The Sisters Brothers, and two Canada Reads books coming from the library, so will add more things in a bit.
My approach has been similar so far. Read and see where it fits. When we get near the end, I will see which prompts I’m still missing. Thanks for sharing another Press. I’m not familiar with them. I need to get to Sisters Brothers too! 😊💙

You have a very interesting perspective on the book then. I’m looking forward to reading it. I don’t know much about it so hoping to learn. 😊💙

Thanks. I just finished What I Know About You. It would definitely be interesting in the debates. 😊💙

Awesome. I’m glad you have some ideas and will be able to fit the shortlist in there too. 😊💙
The list of independent presses feels incomplete without écosociété. But of course, they publish books in French.

Love independent presses. I did see the jury but didn’t realize who she was. I still need to read that book. This year!!! 😊💙
@@BookwormAdventureGirl I'm laughing because you know you can count on me to keep "Drowning" on your radar !!!!!

I have several of their books. I used to have a subscription. Yellow Barks Spider is a great title. 💙😊
I discovered Biblioasis this winter. They publish ghost stories every year that are great fun.
I'll have to check out the ghost stories. 😊💙

@@BookwormAdventureGirlI am certain that First Second is an American publisher because it’s based in NYC. I love their books.
