    I've lived in Uruguay almost 3 years now. Originally from California but have lived in both Guatemala and Spain. It's a Lovely country, friendly, helpful welcoming people and Safe (especially when compared to other places!!) . Culturally speaking it's Amazing- theater, poetry, music, films, dance, literature etc.- more don't miss! I love the laidback pace and style, no heavy emphasis on consumption, high literacy rate (and it shows!) lovely beaches- Punta del Este least favorite( bit too touristy IMO) better Aguas Dulces, Punta de Diablo, Piriapolis and the gorgeous interior with its farms and gauchos :) Viva Uruguay!

    Love this video and remembering my trip to Uruguay
    SOOO fondly! More don’ts: 1) don’t forget to request an automatic if you’re renting a car in Uruguay and you do not know how to drive a manual 2) don’t expect great table service in Punta Del Este if you go during summer 3) don’t expect restaurants to be cheap in Punta del Este 4) don’t spend the whole time in Montevideo and instead make sure to get out to the smaller towns 5) don’t expect everyone to know English 6) don’t forget to learn some words in Spanish 7) don’t expect fast food restaurants to have the same items on the menu as in America (we got a burger with guacamole at McDonalds in Montevideo) 8) don’t lean against or climb Los Dedos in Punta because it smells like urine 9) when visiting Colonia, don’t expect to roll your suitcase to your hotel from the ferry because many of the streets are all cobblestones 10) and just to reiterate what Mark said...don’t forget to try the tannat wine cuz it’s wonderful!! 🇺🇾

    As an uruguayan, I can definitely say this must be the most accurate dont's of Uruguay video there is. Usually these kind of videos are made by people who just went to Wikipedia and made up stuff, but this one is actually quite nice. There are a few things I would disagree (like the vegan/vegetarian options, but I do understand this video is a few years old. Nowadays the offer for vegan and vegetarian restaurants is bigger), but overall, this is accurate.

      What about the mate? Do you drink it the same way now with Covid?

    • @japsuy
      @japsuy 3 роки тому +32

      I agree with the vegetarian / vegan thing, but this is quite recent indeed. Also, he might have been told we're traditionally cattle raisers and our cuisine has historically been based on that. Not so sure about the non-rare beef, I believe most restaurants tend to offer medium-rare / rare asado, there's always a debate and different preferences in every household. I'd also add avoid confusing Paraguay and Uruguay, while we are very fond of our Paraguayan brothers, we are two different countries (sound similar, but quite different). As regards maté (the e sounds in Spanish) we are now recommended not to share it, unless it's within our own "bubble".

    • @vall8249
      @vall8249 3 роки тому +27

      @@fernathebest414 I mean, you're not supposed to share the mate right now. If people respect that or not, I don't know, but I think it's common sense that you shouldn't.

      @fernathebest414 3 роки тому +9

      Thanks to both of you. I’m guessing everyone has their mate now days.
      Regarding Paraguay for a long time I believed that one was the capital of the other. I get that you are different people now.
      However I would like to ask you guys if you believe that both countries could be provinces of Argentina?
      I mean do you think there is a bigger difference between Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina than between California, South Coralina and Massachusetts?

    • @vall8249
      @vall8249 3 роки тому +18

      @@fernathebest414 Uhhh, no. For once, Paraguay and Uruguay are very different. Uruguay has a lot in common with Argentina, nevertheless, but we're a separate country. We have our cultural differences too. I can't tell you how different it is to those states you mentioned because I'm not from the US and I've never been in the US.
      And yes, everyone has their own mate. Mate is shared but, usually uruguayans who drink mate have their own, sharing it is just a custom.

    I lived in Uruguay for a 1.5 years and have been to 95% of the country while I lived there
    Don't forget about the interior (everywhere but Colonia, Montevideo, & the beach towns) Salto and the Termas, Paysandú is beautiful.
    My favorite is Villa Serrano near Minas in the Lavalleja province and Las Cañas near Fray Bentos.
    The three places I haven't been but locals love are Quebrado de los Condores in Treinta y Tres, Valle del Lunarejo en Rivera, Nuevo Helvecia a Swiss town in Colonia.
    Speaking of Don't call them states or provinces they are departamentos, and don't confuse the departamento with the city 12/19 have the same name such as Canelones, Artigas, Rivera, Salto, Colonia, etc.
    If you speak Spanish and come from Argentina some words change like facturas becomes bizcochos (delicious) colectivo becomes bondi and I'm sure there are a few others.
    Speaking of Argentina, don't assume the locals are like Argentines especially Porteños (Buenos Aires residents) while mentioned in the video that is the quickest way to insult an Uruguayan other than calling it a province of Argentina (it's not and even historically wasn't, although Argentines may disagree)
    If you have the time you could probably get a pretty good overview of the country in 7-10 days staying 2-3 days in MVD 1-2 days in Colonia 2-3 days in the interior and going to Piriapolis, La Paloma, José Ignacio, Punta del Este, Cabo Polonia, or Punta del Diablo for 3-5 days.

      As a recommendation, visit chacras and posadas as we call them here, hotels and places to stay in the countryside. Commonly they have a small lake, cows, horses and different animals that for people who lives in big cities and want some fresh air may be a good option.

    About the language barrier: younger generations are more likely to speak english, but we're not a majority. If you come here to visit knowing little to nothing of spanish, you may have a hard time communicating. The positive side is, we uruguayans love tourists, and we're very patient with the communication obstacles. (I've seen my mother talking to Irish costumers with her hands, pointing at the menu and so, and they were pleased lol).

A few years back it was very difficult to find veggie options, but now we actually have quite a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, markets, bakeries and ice cream parlours. And a lot of the more popular, established restaurants also do have vegetarian options. Check them out!

    Uruguayan here. Quick note. Asado, proper asado in Uruguay, is usually cooked more on the rare side. Parrillas (Asado restaurants), that are close to the most touristic places, usually cook it more on the well done side. So if you want have a really tasty and fair bloody taste of meat go closer to the center of the city rather than ciudad vieja (old town). If you have the chance to go to the countryside, even if its close to the city, go for it! Amazing, even for the people that live in the city.

It is the home of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and is located in Punta Ballena, 13 kilometers from Punta del Este. As an uruguayan, I also agree with many things on the video but the vegetarian/vegan part, Montevideo is one of the cities in South America with the most veggie/vegan restaurants per capita, making it one of the most veg friendly cities. Montevideo:

    Maldonado:
    -El Bandido
    -Madre Mia (only delivery but THE BEST burgers and pizzas)
    -Oli Veggie Food
    -Amorcito
    Also, check @aptovegano.uy instagram, they have a guide for each departamento indicating where you can find vegan food.
    Etosha's products are THE BOMB (they have a variety of vegan meats and vegan muzzarella and cheddar, and there many different local businesses that are selling home-made vegan versions of classic uruguayan food (like Vegabon's alfajores with dulce de leche made from coconut's milk). As an Uruguayan I'd like to leave my comments:
    - It's not a bad place for vegetarians or vegans, you can get that kind of food in the right places, but yeah, most of the restaurants offer meats.
    - You never mentioned bizcochos or torta fritas (try them next visit).
    - It's true we don't like getting compared with Argentinians (the same happens with USA and Canada), and we don't like their mates, all mates in the video are not uruguayan. The same happens with a card game called Truco, we have some common things but the game it's pretty different.
    - Atlantic Ocean starts from Punta del Este towards Brazil, to the west is Río de la Plata.
    - Weed is only for locals, but you can get someone who shares, or get in a growshop.
    - ATM's are mostly closed from 10 PM to 6 AM due to security reasons, buy tou can always pay with credit or debit cards.
    - In montevideo we have some malls called Shoppings where you can shop for a variety of things, you can find ATM's there too or stores to exchange money, they open like from 10 AM to 10 PM.
    Thanks for this review and for visiting our country, come again any time! (and sorry for my english)

      @@WanderlustAweSyndrome that is because we kept Spanish as our language. And our culture is much more Spanish than Portuguese, although we have dry borders with Brazil to the North. Both our Capital Cities are across the River Plata, to the South of Uruguay, and maritime commerce between both cities was always very important. Besides, habits in general are the same as argentinians. The differences are subtle. For example, our mate is made with a different yerba (pulverized tea leaves from the south of Brazil), which requires a different kind of straw with very tiny holes. The argentinian mate is made with argentinian plant, which is cropped instead, so the straw is quite different, and the taste is completely different - we don't like it. Anyway, cultural rivalry is the reason , I believe, neither Urguayans nor Argentinians are willing to admit we are more alike than different, haha!!

      Me temo que esa comparación no es del todo válida , en muchas cosas si somos parecidos pero en muchas otras somos muy distintos incluso errónea ya que dentro de Uruguay mismo no es lo mismo un montevideano que alguien del interior .

    HI, there!
    As an Uruguayan (reading if there are others Uruguayans commenting LOL) I liked a lot this video
    It's the most accurate I've seen
    I must confess that it came to my suggestions in UA-cam and caught my attention
    Nice surprise that was
    So, most things are accurate with a few points I got curious bout (for instance: we have lots of lights and signs for traffic, where you've been that there weren't?)
    And our "Mate" is an infusion like tea, can be bitter or sweet (I do prefer the latter but I take both)
    Oh! You need to prove "Martín Fierro" and "Chajá" that are traditional desserts here
    Thank you for your video, kind regards from Uruguay

    Hey!, loved your video!, i am a Uruguayan myself!, just wanted to say that it isn't really that hard to be a vegetarian or a vegan in Uruguay actually!, there are many restaurants specialized on this kinds of foods but they tend to be more artisanal and as such a more expensive, there are also vegan and vegetarian options in stores but less varied than in the us.

    One more thing about mate circles: Saying "thank you" to the person who serves you mate signals that you're satisfied. Do NOT say "thank you" unless you really don't want any more.

    As an uruguayan, my favorite beaches are in Rocha. Some nights in the summer, you can see the noctilucas (which are sea luminiscence) at the beaches of Punta del Diablo, a seaside village that use to be a fishermen village, sitted on the cost of the Atlantic Ocean. You can buy fish and seafood to locals, and is much cheaper than buy it in any other place.
    Some of the best places to watch the stars in Uruguay are in Rocha (like a hamlet called Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo, or Valizas, another seaside village), because there a low light pollution (this towns use to be pretty unpopulated, with the exception of the summer, when they fill with tourists).

    It's funny how the first don't is to not compare Uruguay to Argentina and then there's a lot of don'ts that would apply for both countries lol.
    Great video my man. Good job.
    Greetings from Argentina ♥

    As a uruguayan, i always felt that we don't do a good job promoting our country as a tourist place. I've met a lot of exchange students coming here and they don't find many stuff to do even tho there's actually a lot. The carnival is the biggest event in the country yet is not usually promoted to outsiders, mostly just locals. We all know about candombe & murgas and enjoy them but we never really see it as something to recommend to tourists. If anyone thinking about visiting Uruguay and has any questions feel free to ask me!

    as an uruguayan, i'd say this video is really accurate! here are some more things to keep in mind when visiting:
    most cars here aren't automatic, so if you want to rent an automatic car you have to specifically ask for one. since shopping centres are relatively expensive, i def recommend checking out local artisan shops and ferias (street markets) if you plan on buying souvenirs and such. also, i'm not exaggerating when i say that it can take you half an hour to drive 10 blocks in punta del este during summer. walking is definitely the way to go if you want to get somewhere fast. finally, alfajores-wise (lol) nativo are my favourites by far. they're high quality and totally worth the price imo. personally, i'd just skip the oreo, peanut butter, and odd flavoured ones altogether, although they aren't bad they don't even come close to the real thing.
    if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!! :)

      @@livinglifetothefullest22 I do! My family's always rented from Mariño Sport. Have to admit I haven't checked prices in a while, I can only assume they've gone up a bit, given inflation and petrol prices, but they seemed fair at the time. You'll likely get a better deal booking in advance and during off season, of course. From what I remember customer service is good and online booking is quite easy!
