You should bear in mind that these satchels only feel very small and hard and tight at first. They will stretch over time and you can fit a lot more into them. You must use a leather moisturiser though, to stop the leather drying out and cracking. Must cram it with rolled up newspaper or tissue until it literally bulges and leave it for a fortnight. Then take it all out and Bob's Your Uncle.

Is it a hassle opening and closing the two buckle closures?

No. you can close one buckle for convenience and reach into the front pocket the other side for a car key or phone.
