I visited in 1979 and was invited into a room to see Super 8's of this spot. The Aussies swore me to secrecy. I live in San Diego and South Australia resembles Baja so much before the internet,GPS's and fancy 4x4's. It was a nice time to be young.
Yep I drove to Cactus when I was 18 years old in 75 from Armidale with 3 mates and a cattle dog and pushing the old Holden HD wagon through a flood near Wilcania in outback NSW.
Brings back great memories of a trip I did there in '89. Caught the bus to Ceduna then hitch hiked into Cactus. Awesome trip! Was shown a few secret spots around that way too.
I decided l wanted to go to catus feb 79, so l built a board l presumed would work even though ld never been there or l think even saw pics . When the board was done l went the top of the street in the " Shire" , stuck my thumb out and off l went , 2.5 days later l got to cactus, God knows how many lifts it took me , surfboard back pack .set my tent up without a base just up from the beach . Many early morning surfs l think hardly any guys , though a lot of scorpions. Iam surprised nothing ate me l was pretty naive then . Coupla guys from Port Augusta gave me a lift back to the Port taking me to few good local spots along the Peninsular ,,,from Augusta l hitched another 1.5 weeks along the coast and finally got back to the top of my street . Mission accomplished.. Owning a car wouldve been handy
First surf & fishing trip to Cactus was in 1988, 8 of us went, surfed Cactus, Cuns, Castles & Caves. Caves was by a country mile, the best waves I surfed there, up there with the best right hander I have ever Surfed 🏄♂️ On a side note, the best Gunja desert deal I have ever witnessed, $50.00 for 3/4 potato sack of freshly picked Ponong Red Resin Buds, kept us stoned surfing for a week at least 🏄♂️
Thanks Trev, hey that's awesome, I'll let my mate know that you bought his Kombi. We had a great run down there, and he always wishes he'd never sold it.!!
Thanks Trev, I still can't believe I actually hung off the front bulbar with my legs tucked in, filming with a super 8 camera.!! Gives me shivers now when I think what could have gone wrong !!
Great waves all ways something to play with the big right hander a superb point break. I didnt know about the great whites tii years later so very relaxed.reno abeleiro donald paarman and rob ward put on a great show.
Thanks for posting that video takes me back ,,im a kiwi and went over there in 1974 ? will never forget the trip ..the day we left a young lad got eaten by a white pointer when he swam out to his dads fishing boat at point Sinclair, You guys will be getting on a bit now just like me ,,cheers
Fantastic times back then John, glad you enjoyed it. All filmed on super 8 camera. I think there were 3 great white attacks after we had been there. One was a guy on honeymoon with his new bride, he was out on his windsurfer I believe.
@@baysideaerialimages2761 wow ... i never felt comfortable in the water had some good waves at Caves......we were sleeping in a tent I remember lizards.....and amazing night skies went to Whyalla after that and got a job and BHP before coming back to NZ ,,,,but will always remember the trip to Cactus we had 3 music tape Crosby stills nash and young Déjà Vu carly simons and America horse with no name album sure got sick of them Déjà Vu was the pick of the bunch ......mosquitoes ,,ha was an adventure thats for sure '..çheers
@@spraggo0007 Yes, mate we had plenty of America & Richard Clapton on the way down there.!! We have had two trips down there so far, the first one in the video came about after being at the local RSL one night at a fancy dress party. We spoke about the idea that night while quite intoxicated.! Next morning we were up and packing and set off straight away, sometimes those trips work out the best, very much a spur of the moment.:)
i worked on a farm over on the peninsular in the early 80s and there was a couple of local surfers who also worked on the farm, one was named Cactus, he lived at Greenly Beach i think if I remember rightly. Great place great people great times, should never have left for the city life, regretted it the rest of my life
A funny little known fact is that there are no Cacti in Australia. We camped there for a few weeks in 1995. As well we surfed a joint in WA called 3 bears. There are no Bears in Australia.
Correct, you picked it.! Our initial planning for the trip started after a day at Steamers, then that night we were at one of Boothy's Lightining Bolt parties at Husky RSL. During the course of the night(with a few ales involved) we left first thing next morning.!
Cactus, Castles and Caves wee my home breaks from 1978- 1980 , three years as I worked in Ceduna. We sometimes surfed Caves ( a right and best ref) with just the four of us. BTW we had it on some Huge days unlike this video.
I first went to Cactus in 1970 and it was just desert and salt pans, and we had a little split window Kombi. No water anywhere, no shops and not a stick to be found for a fire. We had to go buy our water and food, and mostly lived on cereal, powdered milk and canned food, but the surf was fucking amazing. And that was the first time I ever saw sharks just cruising around. The ferals told us to just ignore them, and somehow we did and got some of the best waves of our lives.
This Californian’s heart longs for yesteryear. Great video 🤙🏼
Thanks man, I wish I could step back in time to those days! They were the best, lots of great memories 😀
