Haven’t made a classic HiTop Films Batman video in a while… Batman: Arkham Origins is a highly underrated game. It’s considered the worst of the Arkham Series. I, HiTop Films, disagree. In fact I disagree so heavily that I figured I would make an entire HiTop Films Batman Arkham Video Series talking about some of the overlooked aspects of both Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight. II think the story of Arkham Origins is magnificent and is the perfect Origin for this Batman and this Joker. How good is Joker in this game? Seriously… perfection. Anyways this video is called Batman: Arkham - The Perfect Origin (Part 1), it is made by HiTop Films. I guess it’s an Arkham Video Essay or Batman Video Essay. Origins still has the most frustrating one, you don't end up capturing the Riddler or beating him just led to a room with a stupid trophy in it.

@@eliseo5416 that's the whole point the game is trying to make, Bruce needs to stop living his life like that. Because focusing solely on being Batman to the point that the alter is Bruce has made him so jaded and angry that he pays Alfred no mind until he almost loses him. The captions switch to Bruce because he's letting himself be human and putting those walls down.

Anyone else coming back to watch this after The Batman because it reminded them so much of Arkham Origins' ideas and themes? Just me? Okay.
The Batman and Arkham Origins have the same theme of turning vengeance into a symbol of hope.
Kind of off topic, but I'd like to add that Origins has, in my opinion, the best theme song out of all the Arkham games. It mirrors Batman's state perfectly (at least prior to the completion of his arc near the end of the game).
Also the main menu theme music, I like how they mix a dark, batman theme with a christmas melody, it's so freaking great.
@@Prietzelo Also the Carol of the Bells that's commonly associated with Joker in this game is in the main theme if you listen to it for long enough.
I love how the theme makes it feel like Batman is the villain, which he is to the villains of Gotham

Tbh, these games focused on an aspect of Batman that isn't really dwelled on in the movies. And that aspect, is *Batman.*
The Burton movies gave a good introduction to a darker Batman for general audiences, but he was outshined by his villains. The Schumacher movies focused more on appealing to kids and the character ended up pretty bare-bones and chessy. The Nolan movies arguably came the closest to representing the character, but didn't go far enough, and once again he was outshined by the villains. The DCEU had a good concept for a broken Batman piecing himself back together, but it was executed terribly.
These games had almost everything, the accuracy, the complexity, the flaws, the fighter aspect, the detective aspect, etc. The only major thing they were missing was Bruce Wayne, he had very little screen time and he never really stood out.
It's kind of surprising how with the amount of Batman movies there are, we haven't gotten a *true* live action Batman yet. I'm hoping Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson can pull it off.
Edit: Also I disagree on the plot-twist. While the origin of Batman and Joker's relationship is done very well, the way it was introduced was terrible. Black Mask is an awesome villain and this game just treats him like a joke. And considering the fact that this game came right after City where they *killed* Joker, it just feels strange setting up a fresh new main villain for Batman only to reveal it was the Joker the whole time...

To be fair, the whole series treats Black Mask as a joke really.
His only appearance in Arkham City (Outside of Challenge Map DLC) showed him being beaten up by Tyger guards in the intro and then he's never seen again, no one in the prison seemed to care about him. In Arkham Knight he's one of the few villains, (who are still alive) to be completely absent in the Attack on Gotham City. I mean, Zsasz took advantage of the chaos and killed a bunch of people before the sun went down, he can be seen skulking around the alleys of Gotham on the Clock Tower security footage. Even Calendar Man showed up to watch what happens to Wayne Manor. What did Black Mask do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. He was randomly hunted down and killed by Red Hood after the story though.
The only time in the whole Arkham Series where he's treated as a force to be reckoned with, someone whos on par with the Joker or Penguin, was in Arkham Origins Blackgate of all things. A handheld spinoff game that's probably not even cannon.
At least they were consistent I guess...
FINALLY someone who appreciates one of the most underrated sources of media!
Knight and Origins are amazingly good and people are blinded by the flaws, that they ignore the rare and phenomenal things!
How fitting is it that after Batman has accepted the idea of family and working together at the end of year 2, he adopts robin in year 3...really cool detail if you’re paying attention to the small dialogue that takes place

Seems like you dont understand why dunkey made that criticism in the first place. He criticized a lot of people for the "It makes you feel like -" line because most people used that expression alone as if it was meaningful criticism, which in it of itself, it obviously isnt because it doesnt really say anything. That is if you dont ELABORATE on it. And that is really the key word here isnt it? I mean why cant he say that the game makes him feel like batman, when he spends the rest of the video elaborating on why it makes him feel that way. That is meaningful criticism because he is actually saying something.
Im sure you dont need me to tell you the difference between this, and what dunkey was actually criticizing when people used that line.

@Chance And that invalidates my point how exactly ? i mean good stories, even if they are in a game, are all about connecting you to something ( in this video he talks about how this story made him connect to the character of batman through its great characterization and development of the character ), or in other words MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE SOMETHING. You can talk about how a game makes you feel like a certain character in terms of gameplay, or you can do it in terms of a story. Sure, one method is more direct, the other is more indirect, but something tells me it wouldn't have been a good idea to talk about gameplay in a film/story analysis channel.

Also. The art style of Arkham Origins is so unique that it holds up extremely well today. It’s got a cartoonish flair to it that, in my opinion, has its graphics age better than either city or asylum.
The facts are equivalent to the passion and effort put into this video (100%). "We both exist because of THEM!" That was one of my favorite lines in Arkham Origins (I'm glad that someone else saw what the Joker was implying/proclaiming)
Less than 20 seconds in - “makes you FEEL like batman”
the batman of the arkham games is at best a violent agent of the carceral state who alienates all the people closest to him and at worst exactly the opposite of what he should stand for: a protector of Gotham's people from systems of power they can't control. origins takes the aesthetic elements of Year One and chooses to leave out all the substance that made it interesting, suddenly a fight to dismantle Gotham's corruption is now a series of punch fights with assassins and look joker's here too. the introduction of antagonists like Anarky and the framing of Enigma that fill the same role that Batman did in Year One is truly baffling. but the serotonin to my gamer brain from pushing the square button was good enough to keep me playing through the abysmal story of these games, so props to them for that
I liked the character exploration in Origins. Asylum was way more focused on evoking emotions out of the player through the villans and environment, so much so there was a jumpscare that hindsight breaks some immersion but it added to the fear and the feeling of being trapped. However Batman came off as too confident in even the most dire of situations that I wasn't connecting with him.
In City, my favorite tbh, Batman is so focused on the mission we don't get a good look at what he thinks about literally being on his death bed.
In Knight, they really break down what this character cares about, his loved ones, his fears, his mortality and legacy...but the goddamn tank battles and choppy dialogue and "twist" muddles it for me.
But Origins? This Batman got angry, he was passionate, he got exhausted, he was prideful, but most importantly it was a younger Batman that had something to learn. And I feel I learned to be less of an island at the end. (The city is so damn empty tho)
God damn HiTop. How do you manage to make me love something, something that I’ve never been able to describe and show how much I love or how thankful I am for it, even more?

I agree with you hole heartedly. I think the story is fantastic. The main problem I had from the game was the combat.
Now don't get me wrong the stealth in the game was great I loved it. But at points in the game I found myself actively avoiding fight with groups of thugs because of how angry it made me to fight in the game.
That is literally my only gripe on this game.

I actually have logical reasons why I don’t like Knight and favor Origins more than Knight. Knight just let me down as a Red Hood fan on how they made Jason come off as a whiny brat. How they did Deathstroke, how they put down the importance of Death in the family and Under The Red Hood is to Bruce. The symbolism between Batman and Red Hood isn’t there it’s just an angry boy who has reasons to be angry because his father quickly replaced him like nothing, instead of a father seeing his son trying to become man and trying to save him.
But I will say you gave me more reason to like Arkham Origins and why it’s my favorite compared to city and asylum. This video was great and I can’t wait to see more

Thank you for covering this, I’ve revisited these games more times than I can count and I could never put it into words how truly amazing these games’ stories are, but you did it
calling arkham knight a series of boring tank battles isnt a massive disservice to the story its trying to tell. that piece of criticism is removed from any criticism about the story at all. the tank battles are boring to play. even if i believed that they fit into the story perfectly, they would still be god damn painful to sit through every single time you wanted to do something. stealth? do it in the tank. riddler trophies? do it in the tank. combat encounters? do it in the tank. transportation? do it in the tank.
You do know that pretty much everything you brought up doesn't require the batmobile at least no where near to the extent you're making it out to be
dude, theres alot of tank battles but no.. just no... you barely actually NEED the tank it's basically just for the actual tank battles and some riddler trophies.
I once saw a theory that said the reason batman and joker don't kill each other is because if batman kill the joker the clown wins, he proves that batman wasn't unbreakable, and if joker kills batman the bat wins, he proves that joker couldn't break him

If they would've developed Origins the same way they did Knight in terms of graphics, mechanics, and rendering, it would've been one of the best games ever. To me if has the best plot out of the four games, and the best boss battles. The gameplay lacked though compared to the other games. I was invested in this game's plot more than any others, so it is good to see you do a positive video on this game

Hey, I know you're more of a film fan than a gamer, but have you played Red Dead Redemption 2? I was wondering what you thought of it since it's often described as the pinnacle of video game storytelling.

I loved origins. I was waiting to play it on Wii U but then I got so lucky I found the special edition on ps3 with the statue of batman holding up joker for 30 euro.
Finally someone else who loves origins as much as I do. For me it has the best soundtrack to any of the Arkham games as well. Apart from the glitches. It's my favourite.
Very well written story and well written script. I can really come to appreciate this video for allowing people to see the big picture that Arkham Origins' story consisted of.
It's funny, this story line reminds me a lot of the new the batman movie, especially the part about Alfred almost dying
I know that asylum, city, and knight’s joker is the most iconic but I gotta say that I love origin’s the most and think it looks the best.
Got to say that I love the story of Batman Arkham Origins. The only reason I don't rank it higher than the rest of the games have nothing to do with the story. Because this is still a game, and there are elements that do water down the experience. The layout of the buildings lack creativity, most of them are just a straight line and backtracking for the riddler trophies can really break the pace. There are a lot of glitches in this game, most of the times I've played this game it froze at least once.
The DLC content is a hit and miss, I love the Cold Cold Heart story, but there are way too many challenge maps for all 3 playables (Batman, Deathstroke and Bruce Wayne). It gets kind of overwhelming to play several combat challenge maps in a row. I find the most boring, not only in City, but also in Origins, and the worse part is in this game they are even more than City.
Sometimes after struggling with a challenge map, my game would try to get online against my will and erases my progress or sometimes it never loads the screen to go back and select another challenge map, forcing me to reset the game and making me go through that very same challenge map all over again. Have to mention that WB Montreal is no longer patching any glitches, I got the latest version and it still has some very annoying bugs.
Never played the online mode, but it also turns me off that I cannot complete my trophies cause I got to play this mode.
It's a good video and I already appreciated the game but your take on the story did made me cherish the game much more. I do have to say, I really really doubt you can make me change my mind on Knight. But... I'm open to change my opinion. With Knight I got problems with both the game and the story. Gameplay is great, I consider Knight the most fun of all 4 games.
But side missions are just too repetitive and a lot of unnecessary backtracking like in Origins. I appreaciate that the layout of the buildings aren't as big and long on the inside, making it a bit easier, but it still breaks my pacing everytime I got to go back, specially in the Knight HQ.
While I enjoyed some of the challenge maps... I think the amount of characters and batmobiles in the game are a little bit of an overkill. I like big games, but what I love most is a balanced game. Other game with a similar over repetitive experience is Breathe of the Wild, but I honestly find that game better at executing repetitive mechanics because the exploration depends on me and my pacing and not the game reminding me I got something to do, at the other side of the map.
Last... the story of Knight is disappointing for me, you might tackle this in your next video. But Jason Todd being the Arkham Knight makes no sense. Rocksteady lied when they reassured the fans that the Arkham Knight was an original character. And everyone's expectations went high. It isn't out fault for believing in the lie. Lying was a bad idea, honestly, I believe that if they had not lied I might probably had not being upset from the very start I started to suspect that it was Jason Todd behind the mask. I was on the Arkham City forums when Knight was announced and they called the Jason Todd theory a year before the game was released.
I like plot twists that make sense, and in this case, it just doesn't. I'm not the biggest fan of Red Hood, I'm one of the few that felt that Jason Todd was better off dead. But Under the Red Hood is a great story and it wouldn't had worked if the character would had remained dead.
Got a lot of things to critisize the game for that I haven't mentioned, but those are my main concerns with Knight. To me... the best story is Arkham City. But the best game overall is Asylum. It's a balanced, well paced experience which gives the emblematic asylum a lot of personality. Something the rest of the games lack a little bit.
The things I dislike about arkham knight is the overuse of the batmobile, especially the epic fist-fight with deathstroke in knight that never happened
I loved all of the games, but I will always have my favorite at the top. Origins.
I remember replaying the entire game, filling up the slots, just to replay secnes because they were so good, like the Deathstroke boss fight. Awesome vid man, happy New year to you too 🤘😎👍
I feel like origins and knight do the best job of humanizing the Batman. The first two games showed Batman as a heartless monster who just wants to eradicate crime. Origins and knight show that he’s more than that, that he would actually give his life for Gotham, to the point where he actually did.

Excellent video. I wasn't a huge fan of some of the gameplay in Origins. There is definitely a lot the game deserves credit for, however, and you've nailed that here. Good job.
My only complaint is more of a nitpick about the Arkham series. It's the inconsistency with his suit in Arkham origins it looks like it's a prototype for the Arkham Knight suit. Making Arkham asylum suit look like a huge downgrade.

I played all arkham games except this one! Hopefully there’s a remastered of this later down the line. Really interested in playing this now
We must ligitemtly be clones, because throught all the spider man movie and the batman games as a child I felt the way. And I honestly never hear people talk about something with a love and passion of what there talking about. That's why I like you way better than most UA-camrs out there. You know like cosmonauts.
Irony is Arkham Origins was my first Arkham/Batman game , I loved it . And I have some great memories from the multiplayer mode
I always believed Origins had the best story in the franchise. It pays tribute to what came before like Year One, Man Who Laughs, Killing Joke and Long Halloween but also had done new things that add to them.
Planning to replay Arkham series and now i’m in between of starting from Arkham Asylum or Arkham Origins

One thing I disagree with however is about Joker. He shouldn't have been in Arkham Origins nor Arkham Knight as his story was already dealt with in the previous two games we didn't need an origin for their relationship because it doesn't matter. Origins would have been much better without the Joker and If Black Mask and Deathstroke were the main two villains as it would have made for a more compelling story of a younger Batman having to deal with the fact that he isn't invincible and the assassins' out to get him serve as a challenge to this notion and he has to learn how to accept his weaknesses and grow stronger from them.
I love the stories from these games, they are so accurate to what a comic book Batman story is. But I hate the combat of these games like having Batman flip across 10 ft and smacking a dude as a counter takes me out of it everytime
I always play Origins on December on I'm the Night mode and finish it on christmas day
Arkham Origns story SAVED that game cause the gameplay was very sketchy in some areas and had a lifeless world.
You finally said things about these games I’ve been trying to tell people for years! YES! These games ARE ABOUT Joker and Batman’s relationship.

Surprised you didn’t talk about Roger Craig Smith’s performance as Bruce. I’ll always hold Kevin Conroy as THE Batman but Roger does a very VERY good job portraying a younger more aggressive Bruce Wayne.
Well, this is part one and he completely focused on the story elements here, such as themes, parallels and character development. I’m sure the next part or two would talk about the other parts of the game.

I loved Origins. That quote is one of my favorites of all time. “I am the reason why the criminals breathe easier when the sun rises”
I never understood the sentence. Please someone explain. It doesn't make sense to me. Why does the criminals "breathe easier" when the sun rises ? It would have made sense to me if he said "I am the reason why the people of this city breathe easier when the sun rises", because you know, breathing is a positive thing, and it would mean that Batman is making the citizens' life easier by taking down the criminals at night so they can rest assured when the sun rises.
@@Nevad25 because they made it through the night.Batman only comes out at night in the game so when criminals get to the morning they're relieved that the batman didn't get em
