  • The drive leading to the Trail Between the Lakes eastern trailhead was impressive. The recreation area along the shore of Toledo Bend Reservoir is quiet, secluded, and beautiful. Unfortunately, due to the poor condition of the trail, I cannot give a strong recommendation for this hike.

You have my utmost admiration! I'd have never made those first 4 miles. I don't walk through weeds, ever! No doubt a chigger factory. Were you aware the trail was in a burn area before you went?
I'm interested in Trammel's Trace, especially the southern part where it intersects with El Camino Real. A few months back I ran across a stranger on the web who claimed he'd hiked much of the Trace's northeastern parts. Meeting him was the boost I needed to continue my quest to set up a timeline to guide my research as I attempt to learn about my 2x great grandfather's life and tragic death in Nacogdoches or Angelina Co.
So far what I found is that Trammel's Trace was a pretty popular corridor in use by horse theives out of points to the north east bringing fancy horses into TX. How far to the northeast remains a mystery.

It makes me wonder: what are the forest rangers doing? This trail should have been maintained, the trees should be thinned for a healthy forest, and the dead trees felled and ground up to support the soil. What negligence of a beautiful forest!

Chiggers, no fun! It was a pretty walk, though. Too bad about the condition of the trail and markers.

Hey man, a long time ago when I was 12 years old, I built a rock dam under an overpass that went over the Pecos River, I think very near Pecos TX. Do you have any info on that. My family called it, Willie's Dam. I wonder if it's still there?

Beautiful area of Texas. Right north of where you were is the eastern most campground the Indian mounds campground. A great remote campground right on the lake like in your video. I planned on walking the trail you did but had my daughter with me so we passed for some shorter trails. Definitely plan on walking this whole trail one day lake to lake

This was once a privately owned region belonging to a huge lumber company. They borrowed money from the government in early 1900s. When they went belly up the government took over the property and it eventually became the Sabine National Forest!
    Look up Pickering Lumber Company!

overgrown for a 'trail', and the ' trail markers' were not good at all. I do hope you have and wear 'snake boots' and carry 'bear spray' or other protective items, thats really 'boondocking trails' ,,,,glad you do that so the 'rest of us' can see what's out there, that might be good,,or not. Do take care.

My first thought when I first saw you walking into those wooded trails near water is -- CHIGGERS! OMG! They will tear you apart! The best remedy I know for chigger bites is to soak yourself in a bathtub full of semi-hot water (Hot enough for you to withstand without making you feel too uncomfortable) that has been mixed with about half cup of bleach and 1/5 cup of baking soda for at least an hour or even two hours if the bite areas are large. Just sit in the bathtub with your entire body and limbs completely submerged in water with only your face being above the surface of the water so that you can breath. The bleach and baking soda will kill the chiggers with no problem whatsoever! Then you simply rinse your body off by taking a quick shower to rinse the bleach and baking soda off. Be sure to leave the fan on so that it could suck up the evaporation sent off by the bleach since it could irritate your eyes and throat or open the window if you don't have a fan.
If your clothes are white soak them into that bleach/baking soda water as well as you sit on the bathtub and it will kill all of those nasty evil mites for you! If your clothes aren't white then I suggest you put your clothes to wash in hot water with plenty of soap right before you soak yourself in that bleach/ baking soda water so that any chiggers that are left on your clothes would die off. Then dry your clothes in the dryer for about half an hour longer than you normally would then this will kill all of those evil things once and for all! I learned this by watching a UA-cam video and I have used this remedy three times already and it worked every time!
There is no better remedy than this! Trust me, I have seen a doctor for chigger bite before and this remedy is better than what the doctors typically recommend since what doctors typically recommend is to use permethrin cream that you cover your entire body with (From head to the soles of the feet) and leave the cream on your body for two days. Once I have finished killing off the chiggers on my body I leave my car windows completely shut and let it sit in the hot sun for the entire day without using the car for the entire day and simply let the heat inside the car to kill off any remaining chiggers that may be hiding in my car. Like I've said before I have used this method for killing off chiggers three times already and I never have any more problems with them again!

Great video, I’ve lived in Corpus Christi area for 36 yrs but spent my younger years growing up in western Louisiana, my parents would take us to Toledo Bend quite often and I went to a church camp on the reservoir a few times, seeing the pines trees and Toledo bend brings back great memories, thanks for sharing
