The race is named in honour of William Samuel (W.S.) Cox (the racing club's founder) with the inaugural running taking place on Saturday 28 October 1922 for a purse of £1,000.

Yes and no, you are right that field was packed with many group 1 winners, all great stars in their day but the race of the century was Bonecrusher vs Our Waverley Star. Not to take anything away from Super Impose as it was well deserved by a great horse but Childs blew it on Let's Elope, he panicked and when 3/4 wide too early!!!
