  • How do you guys measure success while living in Thailand? Granted we're not all drunk degenerates hanging out at lady bars and are trying to accomplish something during our short time here. Whether it's a financial goal, fitness goal, career goal, life goal, whatever comes to me, let's hear it.

65 year old. I define success as having complete self determination of how and where to spend the remainder of my life, unfettered by financial constraints, cultural obligations (kids are raised, businesses are self sustaining etc.). Your journey to Bangkok has been an inspiration.

And stop worrying about other people and their lives, or trying to make the world a better place. Be more Buddhist. Everyone has their own path to walk. Just walk yours and be thankful.

Im 35, ive had a wife, business which ran itself, big house fast cars and all the toys. After sacrificing my 20s saving and investing and cradling the money my wife left me 4 years ago. On the way out she said that money was all i was focused on and the day i start caring more about people and myself then i will be successful. She had a beautiful soul and that really stuck with me. Over the last 4 years i slowly undone my old version of success and forged a new one. I lost 80 pounds got in the best shape of my life. Sold the business sold the big house and fast cars. Now i focus on my inner world.
    If i could define success:
    1. Having freedom over your own time.
    2. Being in the best health and shape of your life
    3. Always trying new things and meeting new people
    4. Having a healthy and positive outlook on life
    5. Knowing that life is short and it doesn’t matter in the end so don’t take it so seriously.

Just clicked 64 years. For me, success is living life on my terms. That means the freedom to do anything, go anywhere, and be with who I choose. To get here, required a lot of dedication, sacrifice, and focus on financial goals. Is everything perfect? Far from it. Am I done? No way. I still want to learn new things everyday. I want to meet new people everyday. I want to experience new things everyday. Your expat adventures are awesome and you are writing your own story. That is success in my book. Enjoy your channel, keep up the great work.

After obtaining financial freedom 1 year ago at age 39, (I’m now 40) I was so obsessed with getting to that magic number. I’m now trying to figure out what my next goal is as sitting around and loathing in all my hobbies gets old. I’m learning after being “retired” for a year that it’s not all what it’s cracked up to be for me at least. I’m the type of person that needs goals and a journey. I’m tired of being a consumer and not producing anything. So I’ve decided to seek out part time work in a hobby I love (cycling) and do DoorDash and Uber 3 days a week to get out of the house. It’s about the journey not the destination. I also value health more than anything because health is wealth and you’re dead without it.

I will turn 70 this year, now that is a number for you, and I have been living in Thailand since the late 70s. Love, health, fitness, freedom and a certain amount of comfort and beauty seem to do it for me. Living in Thailand since the age of 23 I have been through many phases and have found, like many things, success is kind of a moving target. You are not always satisfied with the same things as you age so get used to asking yourself these sorts of questions for many years to come.🙏

Hi, Forrest. I am in my early 30s and I too live and work here in Thailand. My measure of success is living each day in a way that you can be happy with. Considering our finite existence, and the fact that we could be gone at any moment, I put a lot of stock in cultivating meaningful experiences with those I love the most (my wife and child). While money is important, it is the simple things in life that truly bring me such joy. After becoming a father I began to truly appreciate this fact of life. When everything is a new experience for your child, watching that look of curiosity and joy in their eyes as they discover life's many joys fills me with such an amazing feeling. Anyway, I wish you and those watching a happy and fulfilling life that best fits you.

Definition of success by classic literary writers, who I completely agree with:
    1. Emerson: helping others
    2. Frost: making more choices in life, not just taking more risks
    3. Thoreau: being able to have control over your own life
    4. Blake: being able to appreciate the beauty and the ugly in life
    5. Shakespeare: living happily, even when, at times, you're merely acting that way

33, going on 34 this year. Success is an onion, as you reach that level of success, it'll change and the layer of the onion falls off and a new one appears. Success is not a destination, it will change over time as you develop as a person. My version of success at this moment is when I am free of my W2 and living in Thailand. Once that is completed, my next level (layer) of success will be when I have control over my time and make a positive impact on peoples lives through financial education and financial literacy. Then eventually family, then etc, etc.

Everyone's definition of success changes as they age. But the basic themes that transcend age are (1) health and (2) freedom. Money is important only to the extent that they enable these two things as you personally measure them.

Forrest, I’m 58 and have just retired from a stressful job that I didn’t enjoy. Thankfully, I saved and invested from a young age, so financially I’m in a good place. One thing that saved me from the my mid-life crisis was to look inwards. I found yoga. Meditation and pranayama to be that next step. We often think about success in terms of money and fame however spirituality takes a back seat. So this time of reflection will be good for next phase in your life. Give your higher self an opportunity to come thru.

Approaching mid 30s now, success definenlty factors in money, 10M plus is a bit excessive in my opinion but what a goal that would be. Time/mobility is #1 for me as well, now this of course has to come with some level of money and wealth, but I dont want to sacrifice my entire life just to hoard money and not enjoy my time, its a balance like all things. I also think that in my 20s success was more about obtaining a certain job, fitting into society, driving a certain car etc. Now being financially free and living and enjoying life is really what I value.

Freedom had always been paramount for me. Having achieved a lot of freedom in recent years, I realised that freedom is worth nothing if there's no meaning to pair it with. Freedom is time x the ability to do what you want with it. But doing loads of things, all the time is but a symptom of not having found sufficient meaning. So I'm switching this around now. Having found true meaning and allowing it to become the center of my life is my new measure of success!! Not there yet but will be!! Great video!!!

Hi Forrest, glad to see you back!
Your coffee place in the morning: Kratangtiang cafe?
For me, success is being able to do what you want to do in life, without being restrained by the lake of money. I used to manage a company, so for some that might me considered as success... but I was bored to death. Now I have two UA-cam channels, that are still quite young, and I see myself as much more successful than in my previous management life, even if I can't yet live with my YT revenue. I think that means that, for me, at 57, success is freedom.... much more than power or richness!
Also, if you have kids, success is being proud to see them live a happy life when they become adults.

Hi Forrest, mid 40’s here. My measure of success is giving myself a few short term and long term goals each year. One goal that I must achieve. One goal that I should achieve if I’m putting in some decent effort and one that is possible only if I am really focusing and motivated. Those goals change each year as does life. Sometimes it’s financial, sometimes it’s just personal(be happy and help every chance I’m able to). I’ve worked out that personal goals are the most rewarding in the short term to keep you happy and invested in life, in turn that mindset helps me keep motivated to push for the harder to reach goals.

Plus He's wayne Gretzky....lol I agree with Wayne, My son is a recent UCLA grad and my daughter is 28, sober for close to 3 years and supervises a sober living facility. Real life is messy what really is success? Who cares about it? Do people move to thailand to flex their success? No, they move there to live a less expensive life so Success in thailand to me based on that is haveing a full life, and living it as close to how you want as possible.
Because of Covid, and immigration, My wife and I haven't been back to thailand since 2018. We are arriving on March 20 and staying for 35 days seeing family, and taking care of things including renting our house out in Chiangmai. I feel pretty successful because I can still support my wife and I when we return to southern california. Who cares what anyone else thinks about us? When we move to Chiangmai in the future when I retire, I'm not gonna be flexing or trying to keep up with the joneses. Gonna be traveling and living, like I'm doing now I guess....
I will say that that if success in life is a competition, watch the youtube video by "Ze Fran" "The Time You Have (In JellyBeans)" Having roller skated professionally for my first 20 adult years plus the 8 years before becoming an adult, there are few people that have as many "fun" days as I have had. 15 of those years a 5 minute walk from the sand in huntington beach. Was I rich? no, watch the jelly beans video. The object is at the end of your life, have a pile of jelly beans representing your fun days be the biggest pile possible. Doesn't have to be a competition, compete with yourself.

34 here. My definition goes along your lines I think, and this is why I have been working hard towards early retirement - saving high salary percentages and investing in real estate and stocks etc. For me, to be successful, I need to be able to not be tied down in one place unless by pure personal freedom of choice. To be able to pack my bags and travel wherever I like without the financial burden attached and stay, eat whatever I like. I don't at all mean luxury travel. I just got back from Thailand myself for the first time and lived modestly there having a blast. I'm at the point where I have some very decent savings and could travel months or perhaps years, but I don't want to sacrifice my job for this currently. But this isn't enough I have been thinking. More recently, I have been wanting to start a family also. Find love and have some children that I share a stress-free life of abundance with. At this point in time that's my goal for success

Both were passions of love and both fit me perfectly. I loved going to work and Military Drill. 2nd. my children were given my full attention and my son is an Officer in the Army, next duty station Korea. Good video and question Forrest, we are all so different. I am 70 and realize living the best and honorable life with the ones you love, being the best you can be financially, and spiritually, and looking forward to life's happiness versus dwelling on your past. All the best to you all.

54 years old. Ask yourself if you're happy, if you can honestly answer that yes then you're successful. Whether it's bringing children into the world and raising them and having a strong family to having purpose in life and monetary success. For every person success is relative and it's really an objective question. So being happy in my opinion is the best answer and strive to do those things that make you happy. When I say happy I'm referring to a healthy happy and not a derelict happy ha ha.

Funny, I was just thinking of this question today before I saw your video. I just turned 50, been retired for the past two years and now I travel the world making UA-cam videos about stuff I love to do, which is eat and travel. Success is all relative to what each individual defines as success. But to me, I think if you can find financial freedom to live the life you want to live and have time to enjoy the days you have to live on this planet, that to me is success in life.

But at the end of the day 1) your health is your wealth, and 2) Financially - it's all about money: As long as your debts are paid off and your bank account and savings are growing nonstop - you will be ok.

That section of the canal you're walking along is just around the corner from my place. Now that they've finished the new section heading inbound (towards the Golden Mount), you can walk all the way to the railroad tracks at the beginning of Sukhumvit Road. Lots of little side sois to explore along the canal. Heading the other way, I've walked all the way to Minburi. My favorite time to walk along the canal is early morning, before the sun comes up. Almost nobody out there then.

May I ask what part of the canal you are referring to ? Would like to see that. The parts I've been around where I live are dirty and seedy. Would NOT walk around there.

@@brambostic2009 If you want to check out the section in the video, go to Thonglor bridge (with Sukhumvit Rd. behind you) and turn left. Most of that walkway up to Soi Nana (Sukhumvit Soi 3) is well maintained, though the walk is a bit less rewarding after you pass Srinakarinwirot University. Still worth checking out though; there are some beautiful back gardens in the homes along the way. If you turn right at Thonglor bridge, that way takes you to Klong Tan, Ramakhamhaeng, Lat Phrao, and Minburi. I've walked both ways at all hours. I've never been through any sections I'd call "seedy" though maybe I'm just used to Bangkok. There are some areas that would be considered slums by Western standards, but those are some of the friendliest communities you'll find here.
If you want to do an early morning walk, you're welcome to join. I like the solitary time (who knew Bangkok could be so peaceful), but wouldn't mind sharing some of the places I've discovered.
BTW, what area have you been walking along?

    • @mythai05
      @mythai05 8 місяців тому +1

@@brambostic2009 The area where Forrest is walking is a nice section. From there it's not a far walk to Soi 39 (across from Ital Thai boat pier). There are some sections near the Srinakarinwirot University that are under construction, but nothing too inconvenient. After Sukhumvit 11 it does get a bit rundown.
Heading the other way from Thonglor, there is a narrow section where you pass a local neighborhood, but after the sluice gate the path widens again.
Once you pass the Ramakhamhaeng Airport Link station it's clear all the way to the Sri Boonruang Temple.
You'll see lots of people walking along there in the morning.

Turning 52. I’m not sure there is a definition of success. Once you meet whatever goal you set for yourself then what? I think it’s about finding peace and accepting yourself for who you are. Accepting your strengths as well as your weaknesses. Learning the things to care about and trying not to care about that things that don’t deserve the energy. I learn more from my failures than my successes and have learned to enjoy the failures as well.
Try not to worry so much.

Medium-scale success: Warren Buffet defines it as "Measuring your success by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you."

Success to me means having a child/children(even though I'm a single father), and attaining the highest financial goals you can achieve based on your skills/knowledge/networking abilities/etc. Just like you, I am very hard on myself as I often compare myself to others who might have a built-in advantage (ie trust fund kids), but in the back of my mind, depending on what you've accomplished and learned over the years (hopefully not making the same mistakes), I know that I'm doing pretty good right now. In my 20's, 30's and 40's you make amateur mistakes (and that's perfectly normal)...but now in my 50's I feel that I'm sowing some of the hard work and efforts brought forth probably starting 10-15 years ago.

Being healthy and not needing any pills is a bonus. Sounds corny, but waking up in the morning and looking out at the view and drinking a cup of tea is one of the best things. I'm in my 30s if I think about what it means to be successful in life I think about money and time utilization. Success means being able to pay for your necessities but I don't think working your life away and dying with a bunch of cash in the bank means success. I think our time is the most precious asset we have and we never get it back, make time to enjoy your life. I also think that living virtuously and that being a good person is the most important thing in life, I want to be judged favorably when I am judged by God one day.

Algorithms took me to your channel and I've only watched a few videos (did subscribe) so I don't know your entire background/interests, but maybe your focus at this age (if I were in your shoe) is to consider if your current relationship with your GF is correct, both-aligned directionally, and specifically in terms of starting a family together...especially if you don't want to be that 'old man' to a young child. So, not only is the clock ticking for 'her' (whoever she is), but the clock is also ticking for you Forrest Lee. Am I on the right track here ??? Perhaps for YOU, this is your current path to 'success', and btw I am an 'old dad' age 53 to a 9 year old child, but circumstances was such that this was what happened. I didn't plan on this...sometimes in life things happen for a reason on its own.

    1. Hey Forrest you are overthinking this.
    2. Are you happy and or at peace?
    3. You are a critical thinker. If you wanted mor subscribers and money from YT. All you need to do is change the direction of your channel.
    4. Have you joined groups that like to do the same things you like to do in the states?
    5. Have you joined groups that stuff you would like to do or try out?
I'm not sure if I have a definition of success. I have no idea if that is a bad or good thing. But I also know that this is very fluid, for better and for worse. I'm 56 and will turn 57. I hate to admit this, but pretty much failed in life. By my standards and by societal standards. I'm not your typical failure, at least I don't think so. I just recently discovered that personality wise. I lean towards the Sigma-Male aspect. So I just look at shhh different. But to answer your question directly as best as I can.
My core values of success are these, i think.
    1. Can I pay my bills for the next 6 months if I stop working?
    2. Do I feel like I'm at least a decent person?
    3. Have I been a D%&@ to anyone that did not do anything to me or someone that I care about?
    4. Am I happy or content?
    5. Do I have a goal or an end-game and what am I doing to get there?
You are a good dude. You are just putting internal pressure on yourself but one day you will realize this. Stuff is stuff and you will always change for better or for worse. I would recommend that you try to stay a little bit busier...This is the one extremely bad thing about staying in paradise. WTF do you do if you live in it? lol

I'd say success should be defined by combining all areas of life. Being healthy and in-shape, which includes not smoking, not drinking too much, but going to the gym a lot, etc. Having a great finances, which implies measuring your net income up to a certain point (let's say 150.000 dollars net per year is sufficient). Having great relationships, which includes a wife.
