But I think because he's 192 now, he's caught the imagination of the public. And he … If you come to St. Helena, people usually know two things: Jonathan the tortoise and Napoleon Bonaparte. So, those two names go hand in hand. Although, they never met, of course. They never met.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Teeny Lucy, Jonathan’s caretaker: “Yeah, Jonathan is the oldest living land animal and that is now recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Yes, because we got the certificate last week, only.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Teeny Lucy, Jonathan’s caretaker: “I’ve been looking after him, his alternate feeder to the vet, with the vet, for at least 10 years, possibly 11 actually. You lose track after a while.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Teeny Lucy, Jonathan’s caretaker: “Three weeks ago, we had His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh here, Prince Edward. And, of course, he met Johnathan. Well, he was staying in Plantation House anyway, so he just popped down with the governor and his wife and met Jonathan.”
Reporter: “Was he pretty tickled by him?”
Teeny Lucy: “He fed him, I think, as well. So did Sir Lindsay Hoyle. Yes, he was, I think. Everybody always is with Johnathan. And the thing is, that his father had also met Jonathan. That was way back in the fifties, I believe. His sister has been here, his sister has been here, and she’s also met Jonathan. This was some decades ago now, though.”

He enjoys being stroked under his chin and on the top of his head - as well as the food. But it is, of course, it’s mostly about the food!”

STORYLINE:
History buffs may know the remote island of St. Helena as the site of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile, but the British overseas territory has another claim to fame: a 192-year-old tortoise named Jonathan.
“Jonathan is an enigmatic tortoise,” explains Teeny Lucy, who has been one of his caretakers for more than a decade. “But I think because he's 192 now, he's caught the imagination of the public. And he … If you come to St. Helena, people usually know two things: Jonathan the tortoise and Napoleon Bonaparte. So, those two names go hand in hand. Although, they never met, of course.”
She says his age, which is a conservative estimate, has landed Jonathan two spots in the Guinness World Records as the oldest living land animal and oldest chelonian.
Tourists come from far and wide to photograph the legendary reptile roaming the yard of Plantation House, the official residence of the island’s governor. Jonathan has also received his fair share of VIP guests.
